Purpose: Alloplastic implants, such as methylmethacrylate, Teflon, silicone, Supramid are commonly used to cover the floor defect and to prevent reherniation of the displaced orbital tissue in orbital floor fracture. Silicone implant has been used for reconstruction of orbital wall defects because of pliability, advantage of carving and chemically inert nature. However, silicone implant also has complications including infection, extrusion, pain, dystopia and tissue reaction. Cyst formation around the silicone implant is a very rare complication. According to many reports, cysts around alloplastic implant in an orbital area are mostly hemorrhagic cysts consisted of blood breakdown product with fibrous capsule cell in histologic examination. Methods: The authors report atypical case and successful treatment of intraorbital hemorrhagic cyst around silicone implant of a 37-year-old male patient. Results: Preoperative symptoms of diplopia, exophthalmos, proptosis, vertical dystopia and ectropion of lower eyelid were resolved after surgical removal of implants with surrounding capsule. Conclusion: Clinical suspicion of plastic surgeon is important in diagnosis of intraorbital cyst of patients who have history of silicone implantation and computed tomography is the standard tool of diagnosis. During the operation, caution must be taken on delivering the whole capsule of intraorbital cyst along with silicone implant to prevent recurrence of the cyst.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the systemic and local production of immunoglobulins and their levels in patients with periapical cysts using Enzyme - Linked Immunosorbent Assay. Streptococcus sanguis, Bacteroides gingivalis, and Bacteroides intermedius were grown for use as antigen and they were harvested by centrifugation. The patients were divided into two groups: patients of periapical cysts and normal control. 5 patients of each group were selected and their blood were obtained via intravenous puncture prior to surgical operation. Sera were prepared by centrifugation of each blood samples. Cyst fluid were aspirated from cystic cavity and cyst wall were excised at operation. Control tissue were also excised at extraction site of impacted wisdom teeth from normal control. Each tissue was prepared by homogenization and centrifugation. Then antibodies of each sample were measured by modified ELISA. The following results were obtained: 1. Serum IgG and IgM levels were not significantly different between patients with periapical cyst and normal control. 2. IgG and IgM levels of cyst fluid to Bacteroides gingivalis and Bacteroides intermedius were significantly higher than those of serum of patients with periapical cyst, but there was no significant difference to Streptococcus sanguis. 3. IgG and IgM levels of cyst wall to Bacteroides gingivalis and Bacteroides intermedius were significantly higher than those of control tissue, but there was no significant difference to Streptococcus sanguis. 4. IgG and IgM levels in cyst fluid and IgG levels in cyst wall were highest to Bacteroides gingivalis, and IgM levels in cyst wall were highest to Bacteroides intermedius.
Spontaneous subcutaneous cysts were detected from three dogs, being a 4-year-old male shih tzu, an 11-month-old female britany spaniel and a 9-month-old male mongrel. All the cysts were occurred around the joints (one elbow's and two shoulderes', respectively). After surgical removal, the lesions did not recur for 6 months follow-up. Neither cyst communicated with the joint cavity. Grossly, the subcutaneous ovoid cysts had moderate to abundant mucinous fluid. Histologically, the cyst wall consisted of inner myxomatous and outer immature connective tissue. Some parts of the cyst wall had various stages of myxoid metaplasia of collagen tissue leading to new cyst formation. The true lining cells of the inner cyst wall were not observed in all the cysts. From these results, these cases were diagnosed as subcutaneous ganglion cysts. This is the first report of canine subcutaneous ganglion cysts in Korea.
A very rare form of intrapulmonary cyst is an enterogenous cyst two examples of which were described by Ward and Krahl [1942]. Microscopically, the cyst wall is lined by gastric or intestinal type of mucous membrane which may include islets of pancreatic tissue; their walls contain muscle but no cartilage. We recently experienced a case of intrapulmonary enterogenous cyst. The patient was 30-year-old-male who showed chest pain and tightness after chest trauma. Chest X-ray revealed pneumothorax in both lung field with giant bullae in left upper lung field, right 6th and 7th rib fracture. Left lower lobectomy including cyst was done and the postoperative course was uneventful.
Neurenteric cysts are developmental cysts derived from embryonic endodermal layers. Fewer than 100 have been reported in which there were no associated bone or soft-tissue malformations and only six among those cases showed intramedullary location in the literatures. The authors report a 16-year-old young man with a thoracic intramedullary neurenteric cyst which presented with symptoms of axillary pain and paraparesis. The magnetic resonance imaging showed intramedullary mass extended from level of T3 to T7. There was no associated bone or soft-tissue anomaly. This cyst was partially excised and marupialized into subarachnoid space. The pathological findings were compatible with neurenteric cyst. Nine months later, the cyst recurred and at second operation, cyst wall was removed completely.
Oral and maxillofacial cyst is defined as an pathogenic cavity with an lining epithelium and connective tissue wall. Cysts of the jaws and periapical regions vary in histogenesis, treatment and prognosis. Cysts with similar clinical and radiographic can be shown different histopathologic features. Cysts are classified into odontogenic cysts and nonodontogenic cysts. Cysts are also divied into true cysts and pseudocyst. True cysts are lined with an epithelium, however pseudocysts are not lined with epithelium. A periapical cyst, dentigerous cyst and odontogenic keratocyst is clinically common and important lesions at dental clinic.
An extremely unusual case of epidermoid cyst showing diffuse parakeratosis and aggressive clinical behavior is presented. A destructive bone lesion with surrounding ill-defined soft tissue lesion was found by computed tomography in a 63 year-old man complaining of painful swelling of the right buttock. He had a history of surgical excision twice for epidermoid cysts of soft tissue of the right hip during recent one year On aspiration cytology, the aspirate was highly cellular and mostly composed of desquamated nucleated squamous cells. Operation finding revealed that the iliac bone was Irregularly destroyed and filled with gray-white cheesy material and necrotic bone bedris. Adjacent gluteus muscle showed scattered gray-white lesions. The curettage specimen showed bone necrosis and desquamated squamous cells filling the marrow spaces. The lesion within muscle revealed epidermoid cyst with diffuse parakeratosis.
Recent studies suggest that most meniscal cysts can be treated surgically by arthroscopic management of the meniscal tear and arthroscopic cyst evacuation. But arthroscopic cyst decompression may sacrifice a substantial amount of meniscal tissue that is not torn in order to expose the "stalk" of the cyst. Nowadays, the trend is changing as preserving the involved meniscus to prevent from inevitable degenerative changes after meniscectomy. The purpose of this report is to describe a new surgical technique that minimizes loss of meniscal tissue in hopes of maximizing residual meniscal function. We experienced 10 patients with meniscal cysts that were consisted of four lateral cysts and six medial cysts. Menisci were torn in all cases. Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and decompression of cysts were performed in 9 cases, and arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and open cystectomy in 1 case. The procedures were consisted of injection of the methylene blue into the cyst, partial meniscectomy of the meniscal tear until the dye was seen in orifice of the cyst, and decompression of cyst through cystic opening. This article serves to confirm the relationship between torn menisci and cysts, to re-evaluate the occurrence ratio of the meniscal cyst on the medial to lateral meniscus, and to assess the efficacy of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and decompression of cyst as a potentially meniscal sparing procedure.

Synovial cysts of the cervical spine, although they occur infrequently, may cause acute radiculopathy or myelopathy. Here, we report a case of a cervical synovial cyst presenting as acute myelopathy after manual stretching. A 68-year-old man presented with gait disturbance, decreased touch senses, and increased sensitivity to pain below T12 level. These symptoms developed after manual stretching 3 days prior. Computed tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 1-cm, small multilocular cystic lesion in the spinal canal with cord compression at the C7-T1 level. We performed a left partial laminectomy of C7 and T1 using a posterior approach and completely removed the cystic mass. Histological examination of the resected mass revealed fibrous tissue fragments with amorphous materials and granulation tissue compatible with a synovial cyst. The patient's symptoms resolved after surgery. We describe a case of acute myelopathy caused by a cervical synovial cyst that was treated by surgical excision. Although cervical synovial cysts are often associated with degenerative facet joints, clinicians should be aware of the possibility that these cysts can cause acute neurologic symptoms.
Spinal extradural arachnoid cyst is uncommon and rarely cause neural compression. We report a rare case of severe cord compression due to septated spinal extradural arachnoid cyst. A 35-year-old woman has developed back pain 3 months prior to her visit, but recently motor weakness and urinary incontinence occurred. Magnetic resonance images showed an extradural cyst posterior to the cord, which was flattened and displaced from T12 to L2. Urgent decompressive laminectomy and cyst removal was performed. Histopathological examination confirmed that cyst wall was formed by nonspecific fibrous connective tissue without a single-cell layer of inner arachnoid lining. Motor weakness and voiding difficulty were recovered completely after operation.
