  • Tire noise is divided into two parts. One is pattern noise the other one is road noise. Pattern noise primarily occurs in over 500 Hz frequency but road noise occurs mainly in low frequency. It is important to develop a technology to predict the pattern noise at the design stage. Prediction technology of pattern noise has been developed by using image processing. Shape of tire pattern is computed by using imaging signal processing. Its results are different with the measured one. Therefore, the prediction of actual measured pattern noise is valuable. In the signal processing theory is applied to calculate the impulse response for the measurement environment. This impulse response used for the prediction of pattern noise by convolving this impulse response by the results of image processing of tire pattern.

  • In this paper, characteristics and types of vehicle accidents involving buses that differ from common passenger cars are analyzed. When heavy vehicles are involved in collision accidents, the external impulse conveyed through bus tire from road surface cannot be ignored, so the conventional rigid-body impact model cannot be applied. As a solution, an analysis model which directly considers the tire impulse or considers the bus as moving barrier has been proposed. Also, as there are many instances in which the location of contact point or coefficients related to rotational motion cannot be estimated, utilization of point-mass collision model has been sought. By applying the proposed analysis model to an actual accident case and comparing with the result of the conventional analysis which does not consider the tire impulse, it is shown that the velocity of bus and other values close to the actual amount can be obtained.

  • Roughness of a road is an important parameter which not only indicates vehicle's vibration and noise, but it is also related to the contact force of the tire which is induced by tire's deformation and vibration. Since tire noise indeed comes from this deformation and vibration, the estimation of the force is the key factor fur the reduction of tire noise. Because of the difficulty of directly measuring the contact force, the indirect estimation is enforced from the vibration signature measured on the tire support. This study suggests the "inverse filtering" technique well known in modern digital signal processing, so as to reform the tire contact force from monitored vibration signals.

  • In vehicle accidents, the rolling, pitching, and yawing which are produced by collisions affect the motions of vehicle. Therefore, vehicle behavior under impact situation should be analyzed in three-dimension. In this study, three-dimensional vehicle dynamic equations based on impulse-momentum conservation principles under vehicle impact are introduced for simulation. This analysis has been performed by the real vehicle impact data from JARI and RICSAC. This study suggested each system modeling such as suspension, steering, brake and tire as well as the appropriate vehicle behavior simulation model with respect to pre and post impact.

  • To analyze dynamic characteristics for a motorcar, the creation and the hammering test methods are introduced. This paper has studied the method of computing the natural frequency of the impulse wave on a tire, the decay constant which determines the absorption capability for the impulsive force. Moreover we have examined the reliability for the decay constant calculated, in this paper theoritical results are agreed with the simulated ones.

  • Racing game requires plausible physics model that can be simulated in realtime. Minor artifacts in racing games are easily noticed, and any kinds of games should work interactively. It is difficult to model the accurate tire-ground physics and to integrate the model into realtime environments. In this paper, an efficient and effective 'imaginary wall' model was proposed. The method can be easily implemented because of the simplicity of the physical model used, and the result of the simulation is realistic enough for the racing games.

  • Side impact with MDB (moving deformable barrier) is common in side crash test protocols around the globe, most of which are quite similar to that of US NCAP side impact protocol but IIHS side impact protocol is considered to be the most harsh one due to the MDB's weight and impact speed. In this study US NCAP side impact and IIHS side impact test conditions are compared with respect to delta-V (impulse of the test vehicle), roll speed, and yaw speed as well as survival space (the smallest distance between the front driver seat cushion center to B pillar after the test). Error factors (friction between tire and ground, tolerance of vertical and longitudinal position of the MDB with respect to the test vehicle), which are resident in the test protocol is studied with respect to the global vehicle behavior (delta-V, roll, yaw) as well as survival space.
