This paper presents a hybrid actuator scheme to actively control the end-point position and vibration of a two-link flexible robot arm. Control scheme consists of four different actuators; two servo-motors at the hubs and two piezoceramics bonded to the surfaces of the flexible links. Two sliding hyperplanes are designed for two servo-motors which have time varying parameters to maintain control performance in any configuration. The surface gradients of the hyperplanes are determined by pole assignment technique to guarantee the stability on the hyperplanes themselves. During the motion, undesirable oscillations caused by the torques based on the rigid link dynamics are actively suppressed by applying feedback control voltages to the piezoceramic actuators. Consequently, desired tip motion is achieved. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, experiments are performed for the regulating and tracking control problems.

Internal flow field of supersonic nozzle with pintle, which control thrust of solid rocket motor, is very complicated by pintle tip shape and contour of nozzle. For studying of pintle nozzle performance by effects of internal flow field variation with pintle position, cold flow test and numerical analysis about needle type pintle shape were performed and results were presented in this paper. As the results of this study, three types of internal shocks exists in the pintle nozzle and oblique shock is oscillated by pintle position
Adhesive bonding has seen rapid development in recent years, with emphasis to composite patch repairing processes of geometric defects in aeronautical structures. However, its use is still limited given its low resistance to climatic conditions and requirement of specialized labor to avoid fabrication induced defects, such as air bubbles, cracks, and cavities. This work aims to numerically analyze, by the finite element method, the failure behavior of a damaged plate, in the form of a bonding defect, and repaired by an adhesively bonded composite patch. The position and size of the defect were studied. The results of the numerical analysis clearly showed that the position of the defect in the adhesive layer has a large effect on the value of J-Integral. The reduction in the value of J-Integral is also related to the composite stacking sequence which, according to the mechanical properties of the ply, provides better load transfer from the plate to the repair piece through the adhesive. In addition, the increase in the applied load significantly affects the value of the J-Integral at the crack tip in the presence of a bonding defect, even for small dimensions, by reducing the load transfer.

In this study, a new shape of wind turbine with horizontal axis has been proposed. The proposed wind turbine has two pairs of 3 tiltable blades which minimizes air resistance during the reverse rotational direction. Under a given wind speed, 3D numerical simulations on tiltable blades were performed for various TSRs(tip-speed-ratios). Four cases of rotational position was considered to analyze the torque and wind power generated on the blade surfaces. The results show that the maximum wind power occurs at the TSR of 0.2. Due to the blade tilting, the wind passes through the blade without air resistance at the reverse rotational direction. The torque is mainly caused by pressure differences between the front and rear surface of the blade, and it becomes maximum when the blade is located at the azimuth angle of 330°.
This paper describes a newly developed arc-sensing algorithm of seam-tracking for FCA W (flux-cored arc welding) horizontal fillet welding. In this algorithm, arc current and the Weighted-Are-Current (WAC) are used to adjust the position of a weld torch in directions of bead throat and weaving, respectively. The WAC, which is newly devised in this study, means that arc current in the vicinity of weaving end is more emphasized than that in the center of weaving. The reason of this is because there usually exists much noise in the center of weaving due to abrupt change of arc length in case some empty gaps exist in a fillet joint Variance analysis was performed in order to check the effect of weld parameters on arc current and the WAC. As a result, the relationships between tip-to-workpiece distance and arc current, and between weaving offset and the WAC were established. To check "the validity of the algorithm, seam-tracking experiments were performed ;mder various welding condition. The result of experiments showed a satisfactory tracking performance in the presence of empty gaps in a horizontal fillet joint.et joint.

An analysis of the dynamics of a mechanical monoleaflet heart valve prosthesis in the closing phase is presented. Employing the moment equilibrium principles on the occluder motion and the squeeze film dynamics of the fluid between the occluder and the guiding strut at the instant of impact, the velocity of the occluder tip and the impact force were computed. The dynamics of fluid being squeezed between the occluder and the guiding struts is accounted for by Reynold's equation. The effect of the fluid being squeezed between the occluder and the guiding strut was to reduce the velocity of the occluder tip at the instant of valve closure as well as dampen the fluttering of the occluder before coming to rest in the fully closed position. The squeeze film fluid pressure changed rapidly from a high positive value to a relatively large negative value in less than 1 msec. The results of this study may be extended for the analysis of cavitation inception, mechanical stresses on the formed elements and valve components as well as to estimate the endurance limits of the prosthetic valves.
Use of the Pipeline embolization device (PED) has increased based on studies about its safety and effectiveness, and new reports that describe perior postprocedural complications are now emerging. We report a rare periprocedural device-related complication that occurred during endovascular treatment with the pipeline embolization device for a dissecting aneurysm on the vertebral artery. A 55-year old woman was admitted due to left medullary infarction, and angiography showed a fusiform dilatation in the left vertebral artery that was suspicious for dissecting aneurysm. Endovascular treatment with PED was planned. Under general anesthesia, the procedure was performed without significant problems and a PED was deployed in an appropriate position. However, in the final step of the procedure, the distal tip of the PED delivery wire became engaged within a small branch of the posterior cerebral artery and fractured. Fortunately, imaging studies after the procedure revealed neither hemorrhagic nor ischemic stroke, and the patient recovered without neurological morbidities except initial symptoms.
In this study, we aimed to clarify the wettability and anisotropic flow characteristics of rice leaves as a basic study for engineering applications of anisotropic flow characteristics of rice leaf surface. To investigate the surface structure of rice leaf, the micro grooves and asperities of rice leaves were analyzed and quantified by scanning electron microscope, Confocal laser scanning microscopy, and stylus profilometer. The analysis of the structure of rice leaf surface confirmed that asymmetrical cone - like protrusions in leaf veins were inclined toward the leaf tip. The static contact angle test showed that the contact angle at the midline vein or leaf vein location where the micropapilla is concentrated is about $20^{\circ}$ higher than the leaf blade position. The contact angles of fresh and dried rice leave were also compared. The dried rice leaves showed a contact angle of about $5^{\circ}$ to $15^{\circ}$ higher than that of fresh leaves, suggesting that the volume of the protrusions decreased as the water was removed, thus reducing the contact area with the droplet. In the contact angle history test the hysteresis in the leaf tip direction was found to be much lower than that in the leaf petiole direction. This results can be explained that asymmetrical cone - like protrusions had a significant effect on the droplet flow characteristics through contact angle hysteresis experiment.
The optimal design is needed for the blade geometry of the quad-rotor blades which is mainly used for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. To do this, it is important to analyze the wakes under the blades. In the present study, the flow around the rotating blades was analyzed using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). The maximum axial velocity was measured at about 60% position toward the radial direction of the blade. The positions of vorticities in the test section obtained by PIV and CFD were turned out to be almost alike. The values in the difference of pressure coefficients at the upper and the lower blades were increased depending on the radial direction. Then, the values were decreased at the blade tip. The data of the flow analysis in the present study are expected to be served as the design of blades and ducts for the thrust improvement in the future.

The microwave probe for measuring plasma density is widely used for its advantages: First, it is not affected by the reactive gas. Second, it can measure local plasma parameters such as plasma density, plasma potential and plasma temperature. Third, it is simple and robust. A cut-off probe is the one of the most promising microwave probe. Recently, Kim et al. reveals the physics of the cut-off probe but the effect of the sheath on the determination of the plasma density is not explained. In this presentation, for taking account of sheath effects on determination of plasma density from the cut-off peak, a simplified circuit modeling and an E/M simulation are conducted. The results show that occupation ratio of sheath volume between two tips of the cut-off probe and subsequence pressure condition mainly change position of the cut-off peak with respect to plasma frequency. Magnitude of relative voltage taken on the impedance of sheath and the impedance of bulk plasma can explain this effect. Furthermore, effects of gap size, tip radius, and tip length ware revealed based on above analysis.
