  • The flexibility of a manipulator inevitably yields vibration at the end effector. In this work, position and vibration control for a flexible robot arm was studied using a separate voice coil type actuator to raise the accuracy and speed of end tip. A flexible robot arm with a tip mass is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam. An $H_$\infty$$ controller is adapted to get a robust control against unmodeled higher-order mode vibration, output sensor noise, and etc. Simulations and experiments show that the modeling of the system is acceptable and robust vibration control is also achieved.

  • In this paper, the effect of material elasticity was evaluated through a simple model as proposed by Wang and Yu (1991), for yield mechanisms of a cantilever beam under tip pulse loading. The beam was assumed rigid-perfectly plastic but instead of the usual fully clamped constraints at its root, an elastic-perfectly plastic rotational spring was introduced there so the system had a certain capacity to absorb elastic energy. Compared with a rigid-perfectly plastic beam without a spring root, the present beam-spring model showed differences in the initial plastic hinge position and the minimum magnitude of the dynamic force needed to produce a plastic failure. It was also shown that various failure responses may happen while the hinge travels along the beam segment towards the root, rather than a unique response mode as in a rigid perfectly plastic analysis.

  • A fuzzy control strategy is described which is utilized to control the joint angle and tip deflection in single flexible manipulator. In this paper, an existing model for a single flexible manipulator is used f3r the initial development of an FLC. One FLC is designed to govern the joint angle of the manipulator as it is rotated from one position to another, and a second FLC is designed to attenuate the tip deflection which result from joint angle body motion. Reference Trajectory Command is an important method to reduce vibration in flexible beam. This paper presents a very simple command control shaping which eliminates multiple mode residual vibration in a flexible beam combined fuzzy controller ...

  • For the CT specimen of 25.4mm thickness SS400 steel, the fracture toughness and the magnitude of constraint effect, $A_2$ on the non-linear elastoplastic fracture behaviors were experimentally estimated by crack tip opening displacement. In order to estimate constraint effect, displacement measurement position near crack front should be the existed within plastic region. But it is found that the displacement measurement positions by the ${\delta}_5$ method are in elastic region at crack growth initiation. Hence the estimate of constraint effect, $A_2$ by the ${\delta}_5$ method was not reliable.

  • A new mechanical probe for 3-D feature measurement on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) is presented. The probe is composed of the contact stylus and the three-component force sensor. With the stylus mounted on the force sensor, the probe can not only measure 3-D features, but also detect contact force acting on the stylus tip. Furthermore, the probing direction and the actual contact position can be determined by the relationship among three components of contact force to be detected. In this paper, transformation matrix representing the relationship between the external force acting on the stylus tip and the output voltages of measurement gauges is derived and calibrated. The prototype of probe is developed and its availability is investigated through the experimental setup for calibration test of the probe. A series of experimental results show that the proposed probe can be an effective means of improving the accuracy of touch probing on CMM.

  • A convective, radiating rectangular fin is analysed by using the one dimensional analytic method. Instead of constant fin base temperature, heat conduction from the inner wall to the fin base is considered as the fin base boundary condition. Radiation heat transfer is approximately linearized. For different fin tip length, temperature profile along the normalized fin position is shown. The fin tip length for 98% of the maximum heat loss with the variations of fin base length and radiation characteristic number is listed. The maximum heat loss is presented as a function of the fin base length, radiation characteristic number and Biot number.

  • This paper dealt with the position control of a flexible miniature finger driven by piezoelectric bimorph cells, cemented on both side of the finger. Bending moments generated by cells drives the finger, and end-point of the finger is controlled, so as to move in synchrony with fluctation of target and maintain a constant distance between target surface and inger's tip. The voltage applied for the cell is controlled by tip displacement error and error rate. We proposed a PD-Fuzzy controller under conception of PD control strategy. It brought and advantage which reduce number of rules than that of same type conventional fuzzy system and more correct redponse than PID control results.

  • This paper provides the end-point positioning of a single-link flexible robot arm by inverse dynamics. The system is composed of a flexible arm, the mobile ballscrew stage as an arm base, a DC servomotor as an actuator, and a computer. Actuator voltages required for the model of a flexible arm to follow a given tip trajectory are formulated on the basis of the Bermoullie-Euler beam theory and solved by applying the Laplace transform method, and computed by the numerical inversion method proposed by Weeks. The mobile stage as the arm base is shifted so that the end-point follows the desired trajectories. Then the trajectory of end-point is measured by the laser displacement sensor. Here, two kinds of functions are chosen for the given tip trajectories. One is what is called the bang-bang acceleration profile and the other is the Gaussian velocity profile.

  • This paper presents the straightness compensation system which is a device for improving the machining accuracy of ultra-precision machines by synchronizing the position of diamond tool tip with machine error motion. Sine it is actuated by piezoelectric actuator with highly nonlinear hysteresis characteristics, the feedback control schemes such as Proportional Integral(PI), are required and realized by measuring the displacements of diamond tool tip. for the better tracking performance, the controller was implemented using TMS320C32 32bit floating-point DSP which is fast so that the real-time control is possible. In addition, stand alone type DSP board was chosen fur the easy assembly into the ultra-precision machines. The experimental results show good command tracking performance and the motion error of the machine is satisfactorily compensated during the machining process.

  • This paper presents development of a high speed rotating arc sensor system using a microprocessor based controller with tracking function for a complicate curved fillet welding line, The welding tip connected to the torch body is eccentrically positioned from the centerline of the torch, The area during one rotating cycle is divided into 4 regions of front, rear, right and left in welding direction of the torch tip to determine the horizontal deviation between the welding seam and the torch position. The average value at each region is calculated using the regional current values and a low pass filter incorporated with the moving average method is implemented. The effectiveness of the developed system is proven through the experimental results for several kinds of complicate curved fillet welding lines.
