  • A crack identification method using an equivalent bending stiffness and natural frequency for cracked beam is presented. Modal properties of cantilever beam with a tip mass is identified by applying the boundary conditions to a general solution. An equivalent bending stiffness for cracked beam based on an energy method is used to identify natural frequencies of cantilever thin-walled pipe with a tip mass, which has a through-the-thickness crack, subjected to bending. The identified natural frequencies of the cracked beam are used in constructing training patterns of neural networks. Then crack location and size are identified using a committee of the neural networks. Crack detection was carried out for an example beam using the proposed method, and the identified crack locations and sizes agree reasonably well with the exact values.

  • On the stability of the cantilever beam subjected to a follower force at the free end, the influences of the translational spring and the moment of inertia of a tip mass at the free end have been studied by numerical methods. The centroid of a tip mass is offset from the free end of a Beam and is located along its extended axis to vary the value of moment of inertia of a tip mass. It is proved that as the constants of a spring supporting the free end are augmented, the critical flutter loads of the above system decrease, whereas they increase without a tip mass.

  • This paper deals with adaptive fuzzy logic controller design to achieve proper dynamic response of a composite thin-walled beam with a tip mass. In order to check the effectiveness of this controller, three different types of control logic are selected and applied. The adaptive control capabilities provided by a system of piezoactuators bonded or embedded into the structure are also implemented in the system. Results show that the fuzzy logic controller is more effective than the proportional or velocity feedback controller for the vibration control of composite thin-walled beam with a tip mass.

  • This paper presents the dynamic stability of a cantilevered Timoshenko beam on partial elastic foundations subjected to a follower force. The beam with a tip concentrated mass is assumed to be a Timoshenko beam taking into account its rotary inertia and shear deformation. Governing equations are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and finite element method is applied to solve the discretized equation. Critical follower force depending on the attachment ratios of partial elastic foundations, rotary inertia of the beam and magnitude and rotary inertia of the tip mass is fully investigated.

  • The flow and heat/mass transfer characteristics on the squealer tip surface of a high-turning turbine rotor blade have been investigated at a Reynolds number of $2.09{\times}10^5$, by employing the oil-film flow visualization and naphthalene sublimation technique. The squealer rim height-to-chord ratio and tip gap height-to-chord ratio are fixed as typical values of $h_{st}/c$ = 5.5% and h/c = 2.0%, respectively, for turbulence intensities of Tu = 0.3% and 15%. The results show that the near-wall flow phenomena within the cavity of the squealer tip are totally different from those over the plane tip. There are complicated backward flows from the suction side to the pressure side near the cavity floor, in contrast to the plane tip gap flows moving toward the suction side after flow separation/reattachment. The squealer tip provides a significant reduction in tip surface thermal load with less severe gradient compared to the plane tip. In this study, the tip surface is divided into six different regions, and transport phenomena at each region are discussed in detail. The mean thermal load averaged over the squealer cavity floor is augmented by 7.5 percents under the high inlet turbulence level.

  • This study investigates free vibration characteristics of new energy harvesting multi-layer block structures with different geometrical shapes using solid and shell finite elements and evaluate their piezoelectric effect on experiments. The two and three-dimensional finite element (FE) delamination models for block structures described in this paper is attractive not only because it shows excellent accuracy in analysis but also it shows the entire vibration mode shape. The FE model using ABAQUS is used for studying free vibrations of multi-layer block structures for various tip mass and PZT. In particular, new results reported in this paper are focused on the significant effects of the global and local vibration modes for various parameters, such as size of block shape, existence of tip mass and hole, and location of tip mass and PZT. In addition, we evaluate the power generation capacity of developed energy block structures through a laboratory-scale experiment.

  • In this paper, the dynamic stability of a cracked cantilever pipe conveying fluid with tip mass is investigated. The pipe is modelled by the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory in which rotatory inertia and shear deformation effects are ignored. The equation of motion is derived by the energy expressions using extended Hamilton's Principle. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged pipe segments. The influence of the crack severity, the position of crack, the mass ratio, and a tip mass on the stability of a cantilever pipe conveying fluid are studied by the numerical method. Besides, the critical flow velocity and the stability maps of the pipe system as a function of mass ratios($\beta$) for the changing each parameter are obtained.

  • This paper presents an end-point control of 1-link flexible arm tip-mass by using fuzzy position control algorithm. The arm is mounted on a translational mechanism driven by a ballscrew, whose rotation is controlled by a DC servomotor. Tip position is controlled so that it follows a desired position. Feedback signal is composed of both tip displacement error and change of error. This paper gives tip responses according to the variations of tip-mass and beam length, and the effects of reducing the residual vibrations occurring at the end-point. In the case of the residual vibrations of tip displacement, fuzzy control has better results than the PD-control.

  • In this paper, the design of Centrifugal Compressor which is used in sizes 50 horse power has 8 pressure ratio and numerical analysis of the flow within compressor varying tip clearance length are performed. To get high pressure ratio with low power the exit height of impellers is low but compressor has very high speed of revolution. So compressor has high specific speed although mass flow rate is very small. The shape of impellers at the first stage is carried out. Flow and performance characteristics of impellers has been analyzed by using a commercial CFD program, $Fine^{TM}$/turbo. The result shows that loss coefficient is affected by tip clearance length and compressor has proper tip clearance length. It is possible to decrease loss by selecting apt tip clearance length.
