This paper describes a low-voltage and low-power channel selection analog front end with continuous-time low pass filters and highly linear programmable-gain amplifier(PGA). The filters were realized as balanced Gm-C biquadratic filters to achieve a low current consumption. High linearity and a constant wide bandwidth are achieved by using a new transconductance(Gm) cell. The PGA has a voltage gain varying from 0 to 65dB, while maintaining a constant bandwidth. A filter tuning circuit that requires an accurate time base but no external components is presented. With a 1-Vrms differential input and output, the filter achieves -85dB THD and a 78dB signal-to-noise ratio. Both the filter and PGA were implemented in a 0.18um 1P6M n-well CMOS process. They consume 3.2mW from a 1.8V power supply and occupy an area of $0.19mm^2$.

The explosive growth of wireless network users and the existence of various wireless services have demanded high rate throughput as well as user's QoS guarantees. Towards this, this paper proposes QoS-oriented subcarrier allocation scheme considering the QoS provisioning of multiple users, which is major requirement for wireless network design point of view. This paper introduces joint RR/K&H combined with M-LWDF(Modified Largest Weighted Delay First) scheme throughout observing statistical channel behavior and real time queuing analysis for appropriate resource allocation tightly connected to multiuser scheduling. Accordingly, the system throughput can be enhanced, and the QoS demanded for delay sensitive services can be satisfied. Furthermore, the proposed scheme is applied for OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) systems to allocate sub-carriers in optimal way. The simulation results verify plausible performances of proposed resource allocation scheme via showing superior effective capacity under time-varying physical-layer channel behaviors.

The 1/f noise spectrum of short-circuited output drain current due to the Shockley-Read-Hal] recombination centers with a single lifetime in homogeneous nondegenerate MOS-field effcte transtors with n-type channel is calculated under the assumptions that the quasi-Fermi level for the carriers in each energy band can not be defined if we include the fluctuation for time varying quantities. and so 1/f noise is a majority carrier effect. Under these assumptions the derived 1/f noise in this paper show some essential features of the 1/f noise in MOS-field effect transistors. That is, it has no lowfrequency plateau and is proportionnal to the channel cross area A and to the driain bias voltage Vd and inversely proportional to the channel length L3 in MOS field effect transistors. This model can explain the discrepancy between the transition frequency of the noise spectrum from 1/f- response to 1/f2 and the frequency corresponding to the relaxation time related to the surface centers in p-n junction diodes. In this paper the results show that the functional form of noise spectrum is greatly influenced by the functional forms of the electron capture probability cn (E) and the relaxation time r (E) for scattering and the case of lattice scattering show to be responsible for the 4 noise in MOS fold effect transistors. So we canconclude that the source of 1/f noise is due to lattice scattering.

A divided matched filter-reference filter(MF-RF) technique for LEO satellite packet transmission is proposed to increase the packet throughput in the presence of severe Doppler shift and fading. To overcome the severe Doppler shift, the divided matched filter is adopted where the integration region of matched filter is divided and ouputs of divided matched filer are added to decide the correct pseudo-noise (PN) phase. To maintain the constant false alarm rate in time varying interference and fading channel, the adaptive threshold for acquisition is obtained from the reference filter. As a performance measure, average acquisition time and packet throughput are used, and the effets of the parameters, i.e., Doppler shift, chip energy to noise ratio, user velocity, standard deviation of shadowing, and preamble length are shown.

Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in mobile robot applications to recognize external environments, because they are cheap, easy to use, and robust under varying lighting conditions. In most cases, a single ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the distance to an object based on time-of-flight (TOF) information, whereas multiple sensors are used to recognize the shape of an object, such as a corner, plane, or edge. However, the conventional sequential driving technique involves a long measurement time. This problem can be resolved by pulse coding ultrasonic signals, which allows multi-sensors to be fired simultaneously and adjacent objects to be distinguished. Accordingly, the current presents a new simultaneous coded driving system for an ultrasonic sensor array for object recognition in autonomous mobile robots. The proposed system is designed and implemented using a DSP and FPGA. A micro-controller board is made using a DSP, Polaroid 6500 ranging modules are modified for firing the coded signals, and a 5-channel coded signal generating board is made using a FPGA. To verify the proposed method, experiments were conducted in an environment with overlapping signals, and the flight distances for each sensor were obtained from the received overlapping signals using correlations and conversion to a bipolar PCM-NRZ signal.

With growing applications of wireless video streaming, an efficient video traffic model featuring modern high-compression techniques is more desirable than ever, because the wireless channel bandwidths are ever limited and time-varying. We propose a modeling and analysis method for video traffic by a class of stochastic processes, which we call '$GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input processes'. We model video traffic by $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input process with gamma-distributed batch sizes Y and Weibull-like autocorrelation function. Using four real-encoded, full-length video traces including action movies, a drama, and an animation, we evaluate our modeling performance against existing model, transformed-M/G/${\infty}$ input process, which is one of most recently proposed video modeling methods in the literature. Our proposed $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ model is observed to consistently provide conservative performance predictions, in terms of packet loss ratio, within acceptable error at various traffic loads of interest in practical multimedia streaming systems, while the existing transformed-M/G/${\infty}$ fails. For real-time implementation of our model, we analyze G/D/1/K queueing systems with $GEO^Y/G/{\infty}$ input process to upper estimate the packet loss probabilities.

Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in mobile robot applications to recognize external environments by virtue that they are cheap, easy to use, and robust under varying lighting conditions. In most cases, a single ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the distance to an object based on time-of-flight (TOF) information, whereas multiple sensors are used to recognize the shape of an object, such as a comer, plane, or edge. However, the conventional sequential driving technique involves a long measurement time. This problem can be resolved by pulse coding of ultrasonic signals, which allows multi-sensors to be emitted simultaneously and adjacent objects to be distinguished. Accordingly, this paper presents a new simultaneous coded driving system for an ultrasonic sensor array for object recognition in autonomous mobile robots. An important issue of supporting multi-users with diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements over wireless networks is how to optimize the systematic scheduling by intelligently utilizing the available network resource while, at the same time, to meet each communication service QoS requirement. In this work, we study the problem of a variety of communication services over multi-media heterogeneous cognitive OFDM system. We first divide the communication services into two parts. Multimedia applications such as broadband voice transmission and real-time video streaming are very delay-sensitive (DS) and need guaranteed throughput. On the other side, services like file transmission and email service are relatively delay tolerant (DT) so varying-rate transmission is acceptable. Then, we formulate the scheduling as a convex optimization problem, and propose low complexity distributed solutions by jointly considering channel assignment, bit allocation, and power allocation. Unlike prior works that do not care computational complexity. Furthermore, we propose the FAASA (Fairness Assured Adaptive Sub-carrier Allocation) algorithm for both DS and DT users, which is a dynamic sub-carrier allocation algorithm in order to maximize throughput while taking into account fairness. We provide extensive simulation results which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.

Iterative detection (ID) has proven to be a near-optimal solution for concatenated Finite State Machines (FSMs) with interleavers over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. When perfect channel state information (CSI) is not available at the receiver, an adaptive ID (AID) scheme is required to deal with the unknown, and possibly time-varying parameters. The basic building block for ID or AID is the soft-input soft-output (SISO) or adaptive SISO (A-SISO) module. In this paper, Reduced State SISO (RS-SISO) algorithms have been applied for complexity reduction of the A-SISO module. We show that serially concatenated CPM (SCCPM) with AID has turbo-like performance over fading ISI channels and also RS-A-SISO systems have large iteration gains. Various design options for RS-A-SISO algorithms are evaluated. Recently developed density evolution technique is used to analyze RS-A-SISO algorithms. We show that density evolution technique that is usually used for AWGN systems is also a good analysis tool for RS-A-SISO systems over frequency-selective fading channels.

Today's IEEE 802.11 WLANs(Wireless LANs) provide multiple transmission rates so that different rates can be exploited in an adaptive manner depending on the underlying channel condition in order to maximize the system performance. Many rate adaptation schemes have been proposed so far while most(if not all) of the commercial devices implement a simple open-loop rate adaptation scheme(i.e., without feedback from the receiver), called ARF(Automatic Rate Fallback) due to its simplicity. A key problem with such open-loop rate adaptation schemes is that they do not consider the collision effect, and hence, malfunction severely when many transmission failures are due to collisions. In this paper, we propose a novel rate-adaptation scheme, called CARA(Collision-Aware Rate Adaptation). The key idea of CARA is that the transmitter station combines adaptively the Request-to-Send/Clear-to-Send(RTS/CTS) exchange with the Clear Channel Assessment(CCA) functionality to differentiate frame collisions from frame transmission failures cause by channel errors. Therefore, compared with other open-loop rate adaptation schemes, CATA is more likely to make the correct rate adaptation decisions. Through extensive simulation runs, we evaluate our proposed scheme to show that our scheme yields significantly higher throughput performance than the existing schemes in both static and time-varying fading channel environments.
