  • Linear and nonlinear time history analyses have been becoming more common in seismic analysis and design of structures with advances in computer technology and earthquake engineering. One of the most important issues for such analyses is the selection of appropriate acceleration time histories and matching these histories to a code design acceleration spectrum. In literature, there are three sources of acceleration time histories: artificial records, synthetic records obtained from seismological models and accelerograms recorded in real earthquakes. Because of the increase of the number of strong ground motion database, using and scaling real earthquake records for seismic analysis has been becoming one of the most popular research issues in earthquake engineering. In general, two methods are used for scaling actual earthquake records: scaling in time domain and frequency domain. The objective of this study is twofold: the first is to discuss and summarize basic methodologies and criteria for selecting and scaling ground motion time histories. The second is to analyze scaling results of time domain method according to ASCE 7-05 and Eurocode 8 (1998-1:2004) criteria. Differences between time domain method and frequency domain method are mentioned briefly. The time domain scaling procedure is utilized to scale the available real records obtained from near fault motions and far fault motions to match the proposed elastic design acceleration spectrum given in the Eurocode 8. Why the time domain method is preferred in this study is stated. The best fitted ground motion time histories are selected and these histories are analyzed according to Eurocode 8 (1998-1:2004) and ASCE 7-05 criteria. Also, characteristics of both near fault ground motions and far fault ground motions are presented by the help of figures. Hence, we can compare the effects of near fault ground motions on structures with far fault ground motions' effects.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the quantitative detection of periodontal pathogens before and after scaling by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Methods: Participants were voluntarily recruited at D university, and saliva samples were extracted before and after scaling. Multiple real-time polymerase chain reactions were used to analyze characteristics and the amount of nine kinds of periodontal pathogens; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, Prevotella intermedia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Parvimonas micra, Campylobacter rectus, and Eikenella corrodens. Results: After scaling, most periodontal pathogens except Eikenella corrodens were significantly decreased in all subjects(p<0.05). In addition, the percentage of microorganisms associated with disease, the microorganism risk index of periodontitis and the prevalence of red complex, orange complex, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans was also significantly reduced after scaling(p<0.05). Conclusions: Scaling decreased in the amount of major periodontal pathogens and periodontitis prevalence rate.

  • The scaling relationship of the longest relaxation time of a single chain of semiflexible biological polyelectrolyte has been investigated by performing well-established coarse-grained Brownian dynamics simulations. Two kinds of longest relaxation times were estimated from time-sequences of chain trajectories, and their behaviors were interpreted by applying the scaling law for different molecular weights of polyelectrolyte and Debye lengths. The scaling exponents for longest stress relaxation and rotational relaxation are found in the ranges of 1.67-1.79 and 1.65-1.81, respectively, depending on the physicochemical interaction of electrostatic Debye screening. The scaling exponent increases with decreasing screening effect, which is a special feature of polyelectrolytes differing from neutral polymers. It revealed that the weak screening allows a polyelectrolyte chain to follow the behavior in good solvent due to the strong electrostatic repulsion between beads.

  • In this study, model simplification problem using singular perturbation technique is considered. The correctness and errors of simplified model which is obtained by the use of this technique, depends upon the order and the time scaling factor of the simplified model But, unfortunately, there is no explicit criteria for selections of these parameters. In this paper, error equations are derived and expanded by using the useful properties of $L_2$-norm. Then, new criteria for selecting the order of the simplified model and time scaling factor with respect to error bound are suggested. Since these criteria, newly proposed in this study, have strong concern about error bound, it can be used to choose the minimum order of the simplified model and time scaling factor with respect to given error bound. Conversely, if the order of the simplified model and time scaling factor are given, the error induced by the simplification can also be computed easily.

  • Time history analyses have been preferred commonly in earthquake engineering area to determine earthquake performances of structures in recent years. Advances in computer technology and structural analysis have led to common usage of time history analyses. Eurocode 8 allows the use of real earthquake records as an input for linear and nonlinear time history analyses of structures. However, real earthquake records with the desired characteristics sometimes may not be found, for example depending on soil classes, in this case artificial and synthetic earthquake records can be used for seismic analyses rather than real records. Selected earthquake records should be scaled to a code design spectrum to reduce record to record variability in structural responses of considered structures. So, scaling of earthquake records is one of the most important procedures of time history analyses. In this paper, four real earthquake records are scaled to Eurocode 8 design spectrums by using SESCAP (Selection and Scaling Program) based on time domain scaling method and developed by using MATLAB, GUI software, and then scaled and real earthquake records are used for linear time history analyses of a six-storied building. This building is modeled as spatial by SAP2000 software. The objectives of this study are to put basic procedures and criteria of selecting and scaling earthquake records in a nutshell, and to compare the effects of scaled earthquake records on structural response with the effects of real earthquake records on structural response in terms of record to record variability of structural response. Seismic analysis results of building show that record to record variability of structural response caused by scaled earthquake records are fewer than ones caused by real earthquake records.

  • The flame lengths and NOx emission characteristics of syngas $H_2$/CO turbulent non-premixed jet flames were investigated. The flame length which is the main parameter governs NOx emission was studied for various syngas compositions. The flame length was compared with previous correlation between Froude number and flame height and it shows that they have good agreements. It was confirmed that the turbulent jet flames herein investigated are in the region of buoyancy-momentum transition. NOx emission was reduced with increased Reynolds number and CO contents in syngas fuel and with decreased fuel nozzle diameter which is attributed by decreased flame residence time. Previous EINOx scaling based on flame residence time of $L_f^3/(d_f^2U_f)$ satisfies only the jet flame in momentum-dominated region, not buoyancy-momentum transition region. The simplified flame residence time ($L_f/U_f$) was adopted in modified EINOx scaling. The modified scaling satisfies the jet flames not only in momentum-dominated region but in buoyancy-momentum transition region. The scaling is also satisfied with $H_2$/CO syngas jet flames.

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate Korean scaling fear (KSF)-1.1 and related factors in scaling patients. Methods : The subjects were 314 scaling patients in 7 dental clinics in Daegu from April to June, 2013. Data were analyzed for simple frequency rate, t-test and ANOVA(Sheffes's post hoc) for the identification of the differences between KSF-1.1 and variables. Multiple regression was analyzed for the impact of independent variable on the score of KSF-1.1. Results : Mean score of KSF-1.1 in 314 scaling patients was 2.60. Female patients (2.71) had a higher score than male (2.47) (p<0.01). Those who didn't get a regular dental check up(2.87) tended to have higher fear level than those who had regular checkup (2.46) (p<0.001). Those who experienced dental pain (2.90) had significantly higher score than those who had not (2.46) (p<0.001). There was a significant difference between three groups (yes 3.03, ordinary 2.79, and no 2.42) in scaling (p<0.001) and financial burden (p<0.001). Variables associated with score of KSF-1.1 were gender(${\beta}$=0.21, p<0.05), waiting time for scaling(${\beta}$=0.24, p<0.01) and financial burden (${\beta}$=0.22, p<0.02) by multiple regression analysis. Conclusions : The influencing factors of scaling were gender, financial burden, waiting time for scaling that may effect on a score of KSF-1.1.

  • The recent spread of scaled telemanipulation into microsurgery and the nano-world increasingly requires the identification of the possible operation region as a main system specification. A teleoperation system is a complex cascaded system since the human operator, master, slave, and communication are involved bilaterally. Hence, a small time delay inside a master and slave system can be critical to the overall system stability even without communication time delay. In this paper we derive an upper bound of the scaling product of position and force by using Llewellyns unconditional stability. This bound can be used for checking the validity of the designed bilateral controller. Time delay from the sample and hold of computer control and its effects on stability of scaled teleoperation are modeled and simulated based on the transfer function of the teleoperation system. The feasible operation region in terms of position and force scaling decreases sharply as the sampling rate decreases and time delays inside the master and slave increase.
