  • Converging flows of a gas and a liquid at a microchannel cross junction, under proper conditions, can result in the formation of periodic, dispersed microslugs. This microslug formation phenomenon has been proposed as the basis for a fuel injection system in a novel, 'discrete' monopropellant microthruster designed for use in next-generation miniaturized satellites. Previous experimental studies demonstrated the ability to generate fuel slugs with characteristics commensurate with the intended application during steady-state operation. In this work, numerical and experimental techniques are used to study the effect of valve actuation on slug characteristics, and the results are used to compare with equivalent steady-state slugs. Computational simulations of a valve with a 1 ms valve-actuation cycle show that as the ratio of the response time of the valve to the fully open time is increased, transient effects can increase slug length by up to 17%. The simulations also demonstrate that the effect of the valve is largely independent of surface tension coefficient, which is the thermophysical parameter most responsible for slug formation characteristics. Flow visualization experiments performed using a miniature valve with a 20 ms response time showed less than a 1% change in the length of slugs formed during the actuation cycle. The results of this study indicate that impulse bit and thrust calculations can discount transient effects for slower valves, but as valve technology improves transient effects may become more significant.

  • Sound intensity method is well known as a visualization technique of sound field or sound propagation in noise control. Sound intensity or energy flux is a vector quantity which describes the amount and the direction of net flow of acoustic energy at a given position. Especially two dimensional sound intensity method is very useful in evaluating periodic characteristics and acoustic propagation mode of noise source. In this paper, we have studied the noise source Identification, acoustic sound field analysis, and characteristics of noise source of rotary compressor and scroll compressor for air conditioner using complex sound intensity method. Also we proposed a now method of time domain analysis which is used in evaluating of position of noise source in rotary and scroll compressor in this paper This paper presents the advantage, simplicity and economical efficiency of this method by analysing the characteristics of noise source with two dimensional complex sound intensity simultaneously.

  • Flow characteristics of two-dimensional closed square cavities near unsteady critical Reynolds numbers were studied numerically at four Reynolds numbers : $8{\times}10^3,\;8.5{\times}10^3,\;9{\times}10^3\;and\;9.5{\times}10^3.$ A convection conservative difference scheme based upon SOLA to maintain the nearly 2nd-order spatial accuracy is adopted on irregular grid formation. Irregular grid number is $80{\times}80$ and its minimum size is about 1/400 of the cavity height(H) and its maximum is about 1/53 H. The result shows that the critical Reynolds number indicating the emergence of flow wnsteadiness is ranging from Re=$8{\times}10^3\;to\;8.5{\times}10^3$ and their flow patterns reveal periodic fluctuation during transient and fully developed stages. But macroscopic flow behavior in terms of instantaneous and time-mean characteristics represent remarkable difference.

  • The reflectivity of a grid ferrite electromagnetic wave absorber is analyzed using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, which is usually used in anechoic chambers for EMI / EMS test. The frequency dispersive characteristics of ferrite medium and its boundary condition are modeled using magnetic flux in addition to E- and H-fields. By applying Floquets theorem, FDTD analysis of the grid ferrite absorber with periodic infinite array is simplified as a unit cell problem. The method of homogenization which is mainly utilized in the calculation of absorber reflectivity as a low frequency technique takes only into account volume fraction of the unit cell of the absorber except for the structure of medium geometry. However, the presented method in this paper can analyze the geometry effect of the unit cell with its medium characteristics up to high frequency region.

  • In this paper, a real-time communication method using a PICNET-NP(Plant Instrumentation and Control Network for Nuclear Power plant) is proposed with an analysis of the control network requirements of DCS (Distributed Control System) in nuclear power plants. The method satisfies deadline in case of worst data traffics by considering aperiodic and periodic real-time data and others. In addition, the method was used to analyze the data characteristics of the DCS in existing nuclear power plant. The result shows that use of this method meets the response time requirement(100ms)

  • The unsteady transonic viscous flow has been analyzed over an oscillatory airfoil. The CSCM(Conservative Supra Characteristic Method) upwind flux difference splitting method and the iterative time marching scheme having first order accuracy in time and second to third order accuracy in space was applied on dynamic meshes. A steady flow field of Mach number 0.7 has been calculated for the verification of unsteady algorithm. The time-accurate unsteady calculations have been done for NACA 0012 airfoil oscillating around quarter chord about freestream Mach number 0.6 on dynamic meshes. The results have been compared with the AGARD Case 3 experimental data. The periodic characteristics have been compared with the experimental results.

  • The data link layer of Foundation Fieldbus provides both token-passing and scheduling services for periodic, time-critical and time-available data. This study developed an analytical model that evaluates the delay performance of urgent data when the data link layer of Foundation Fieldbus provides token-passing service. The validity of analytical model is verified using an experimental model that consists of network interface boards of Foundation Fieldbus. Comparison of analytical and experimental models shows that the analytical model can be utilized in the approximate analysis of the delay characteristics of time-critical data in the Foundation Fieldbus. The analytical model can also be used in the basic design stage of Foundation Fieldbus network system.

  • A significant enhancement of the magneto-optical Faraday rotation and extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) in the cascaded double-fishnet (CDF) structure with periodic rectangular apertures is theoretically predicted by using the extended finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The results demonstrate that the transmittance spectrum of the CDF structure has two EOT resonant peaks in a broad spectrum spanning visible to near-infrared wavebands, one of them coinciding with the enhanced Faraday rotation and large figure of merit (FOM) at the same wavelength. It is most important that the resonant position and intensity of the transmittance, Faraday rotation and FOM can be simply tailored by adjusting the incident wavelength, the thickness of the magnetic layer, and the offset between two metallic rectangular apertures, etc. Furthermore, the intrinsic physical mechanism of the resonance characteristics of the transmittance and Faraday rotation is thoroughly studied by investigating the electromagnetic field distributions at the location of resonance. It is shown that the transmittance resonance is mainly determined by different hybrid modes of surface plasmons (SPs) and plasmonic electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) behavior, and the enhancement of Faraday rotation is mostly governed by the plasmonic electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) behavior and the conversion of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode and transverse electric (TE) mode in the magnetic dielectric layer.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation of the behavior of the LiBr solution droplets and falling films in horizontal tube banks of absorber. The model developed here accounts for the details of the droplets formation and impact process for absorption on horizontal tubes including the heat transfer from solution film to the tube wall. Especially. the characteristic of unsteady behavior of solution flow has been investigated. Flow visualization studies shown that the solution droplets and falling films have some of the complex characteristics. It is found that. with the numerical conditions similar to the operating condition of an actual absorption chiller/heater, the outlet solution temperature and heat flux from solution film to the tube wall have a stable periodic behavior with time. The solution droplets and falling films in horizontal tube banks of absorber is a periodic unsteady flow. The results from this model are compared with previous experimental observation taken with a high-speed digital video camera and shown good agreement.
