Structure Analysis of $BaTiO_3$ Film on the MgO(001) Surface by Time-Of-Flight Impact-Collision Ion Scattering Spectroscopy

  • Time-of-flight impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (TOF-ICISS) was applied to study the geometrical structure of the epitaxially grown BaTiO₃ layers on the MgO(100) surface. Hetero-epitaxial BaTiO₃ layers can be deposited by the following steps: first thermal evaporation of titanium onto the MgO(100) surface in the atmosphere of oxygen at 400℃, secondly thermal evaporation of barium in the same manner, and finally annealing at 800℃. Well ordered perovskite BaTiO₃ was confirmed from the ICISS spectra and reflection high electron energy diffraction (RHEED) patterns. It was also revealed that BaTiO₃ had cubic structure with the same lattice parameter of bulk phase.

MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry as a Useful Tool for Identification of Enterococcus spp. from Wild Birds and Differentiation of Closely Related Species

  • The aim of this study was to explore the accuracy and feasibility of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in identifying bacteria from environmental sources, as compared with rpoA gene sequencing, and to evaluate the occurrence of bacteria of the genus Enterococcus in wild birds. In addition, a phyloproteomic analysis of certain Enterococcus species with spectral relationships was performed. The enterococci were isolated from 25 species of wild birds in central Europe (Poland). Proteomic (MALDI-TOF MS) and genomic (rpoA gene sequencing) methods were used to identify all the isolates. Using MALDI-TOF MS, all 54 (100%) isolates were identified as Enterococcus spp. Among these, 51 (94.4%) isolates were identified to the species level (log(score) ${\geq}2.0$), and three isolates (5.6%) were identified at a level of probable genus identification (log(score) 1.88-1.927). Phylogenetic analysis based on rpoA sequences confirmed that all enterococci had been correctly identified. Enterococcus faecalis was the most prevalent enterococcal species (50%) and Enterococcus faecium (33.3%) the second most frequent species, followed by Enterococcus hirae (9.3%), Enterococcus durans (3.7%), and Enterococcus casseliflavus (3.7%). The phyloproteomic analysis of the spectral profiles of the isolates showed that MALDI-TOF MS is able to differentiate among similar species of the genus Enterococcus.

  • Some diphenoquinone(DQ) derivatives were synthesized and electron drift mobility of them measured by Time of Flight (TOF) apparatus. Electron drift mobility of DQ series is linearly on increasing electric filed dependent. Drift mobility of ADQ mixture is $1{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ at $1.1{\mu}m$ thickness and $8.1{\times}10^4V/cm$.

  • Benomyl, one of the known endocrine disrupting chemicals, was analyzed to understand the fate in the nature. Water, sediment and biota samples are acidified to hydrolyze benomyl into carbendazim then followed by extraction and concentration. The concentrations of carbendazim in the samples were determined by liquid chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Analysis data showed that certain amount of carbendazim was accumulated in sediment. On the contrary, no sign of accumulation in biota was observed probably due to the increased degradation rate in vivo. It is, however, that no one can claim carbendazim is not harmful to biota, since carbendazim may give a negative effect against organisms at the point of intaking.

  • Multilateration that consists of three or more fixed nodes has been widely used in the field of indoor real time location system(RTLS). However, when one or two among fixed nodes are partially out of communication reachability due to obstruction and unstable node, it is difficult to obtain an efficient location information. In order to improve the challenges of poor ranging measurements and fluctuations in these environment, this paper presents, based on TOF(Time of Flight), a new algorithm which can reduce the inherent ranging measurements errors in the conventional multilateration using a vector prediction algorithm for the displacement estimation of mobile node and Kalman filter for an efficient distance average. Even if a person moves with mobile node and then it fails ranging measurement from some of fixed nodes, the proposed algorithm using a present and previous measurement value can predict the distance between mobile node and fixed node which fails ranging measurement. The experimental results are shown that the proposed system improves the localization accuracy and efficiency compared with conventional method, respectively.

  • We have investigated a structural change of Si(100)-($2 \times 1$)-Sb surface caused by atomic hydrogen adsorption at room temperature using time-of-flight impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (TOF-ICISS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). We found that when atomic hydrogen adsorbs on the Si(100)-($2 \times 1$)-Sb surface, (1) the partial desorption of Sb atoms from the Si(100) surface occurs even at room temperature, (2) the rest Sb atoms are displaced from their original positions and form an almost two-dimensional layer with dispersive distribution of Sb atoms, and (3) the structural transformation into the Si(100)-($1 \times 1$)-H periodicity is induced by the formation of the $1 \times 1$-H dihydride phase on the Si substrate.

  • Time-Of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) are the useful instruments to measure nanostructures of material surfaces. Surface pattern formation in blending homopolymer and diblock copolymer films was investigated as a function of film thickness and annealing conditions. In this study, surface structures of blending homopolymer [deuterated polystyrene (Mn 20,000), poly (methyl methacrylate) (Mn 18,000)] and diblock copolymer [Poly (deuteratedstyrene(d8)-b-methyl methacrylate) (Mn 19,500-18,100)] films were observed. The AFM result indicated that the nanostructures and film thickness depended on temperature, concentration and solvent. TOF-SIMS depth profiling was obtained for the lamellar morphology of symmetric dPS-b-PMMA which is found to orient parallel to the surface of the substrate. Elemental and molecular depth profiles measured in the negative ion mode by a Cs+ primary ion beam demonstrate variations in hydrogen, deuterium, carbon, oxygen, hydrocarbons and deuterated hydrocarbons within the diblock copolymer according to the depth.

Multidrug-resistant Staphylococci Found on Book Surfaces in East London Libraries

  • There is an increase in the presence of drug-resistant staphylococci outside of the nosocomial and healthcare setting. Although the presence of staphylococci has been studied in several public spaces, nothing is known on the presence of staphylococci in public libraries. Book surfaces from public libraries in the East London area, United Kingdom were swabbed and cultured and identity of the isolates determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS). Seven different staphylococcal species were identified by MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. This short study provides evidence of the presence of multidrug-resistant staphylococci in public libraries in the East London area.

  • Energy calibration is important to identify accurate neutron capture resonance energy in the neutron TOF (Time-of-Flight) experiment. In present study, the accurate neutron capture resonance energies of natural Sm were measured by using a 46-MeV electron linear accelerator (linac) at the Research Reactor Institute, Kyoto University(KURRI). The BGO spectrometer were adopted for measurement the prompt capture gamma-ray of the sample. To obtain energy calibration curve, resonance energy of a gold sample used as standard resonance energy Mughabghab's data (From neutron resonance parameters data). Previous data (by Mughabghab) of natural Sm sample have been compared with the present result.

Protein Expression Profiling of Infected Murine Macrophage Cells (RAW 264.7) by Bacillus anthracis Spores

  • Current therapeutic strategies far anthrax have had no significant impact on anthrax mortality over the last several decades. This study used a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) discovery platform to generate protein expression profiles in search of overexpressed proteins in murine macrophage cells (RAW264.7) which infected with Bacillus anthracis spores as potentially novel molecular targets. Two differentially expressed proteins were identified in infected murine macrophage cells as Syndapin and CDC46, respectively. Syndapins are potential links between the cortical actin cytoskeleton and endocytosis. Other two proteins were identified from murine macrophage cells infected with avirulent spores as ITBG-2 (CD18) and HSPA5, respectively. These data demonstrate the feasibility of using a MALDI-TOF platform to generate protein expression profiles and identify potential molecular targets for anthrax therapeutics.
