  • The purpose of this study is to predict the defibrillation success of a ventricular Fibrillation ECG signal using time-frequency analysis. During CPR, coronary perfusion pressure and electrocardiogram were measured. Parameters extracted from time-frequency domain were served as predictor of resuscitation success. Time frequency distribution(TFD) of ECG signals was estimated from the smoothed pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution(SPWVD). Median frequency, peak frequency, 1/f slope, frequency band ratios$(2{\sim}4Hz,\;4{\sim}6Hz,\;6{\sim}8Hz,\;8{\sim}10Hz,\;10{\sim}12Hz,\;12{\sim}15Hz)$ were extracted from each TFD as function of time. Paired t-test was used to determine the differences in ROSC and non-ROSC groups. In the statistical results, we selected four significant parameters - median frequency, 1/f slope, $2{\sim}4Hz$ band ratio, $8{\sim}10Hz$ band ratio. We made an attempt to predict defibrillation success by combining features extracted from time frequency distribution. Independent t-test was used to determine the differences ROSC and non-ROSC groups. Consequently, we selected four significant parameters-median frequency, 1/f slope, $2{\sim}4Hz$ band ratio, $8{\sim}10Hz$ band ratio. The relationship between coronary perfusion pressure and ECG parameters was analyzed with linear regression analysis. R-square value was 55%. 1/f slope and $8{\sim}10Hz$ band ratio had the significant relationship with coronary perfusion pressure.

  • Acoustic signal such as speech and scattered sound, are generally a nonstationary process whose frequency contents vary at any instant of time. For time-varying signal, whether a nonstationary or a deterministic transient signal, a traditional frequency domain representation does not reveal the contents of signal characteristics and may lead to erroneous results such as the loss of desired characteristics features or the mis-interpretation for a wrong conclusion. A time-frequency domain representation is needed to characterize such signatures. Pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD) is ideally suited for portraying nonstationary signal time-frequency domain and carried out by adapting the fast Fourier transform algorithm. In this paper, the important properties of PWVD were investigated using both stationary and nonstationry signatures by numerical examples PWVD was applied to acoustic sigtnatures to demonstrate its application for time-ferquency domain analysis.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the time distribution of single storms and to establish the model of storm patterns in korea. Rainfall recording charts collected from 42 metheorological stations covering the Korean peninsula were analyzed. A single storm was defined as a rain period seperated from preceding and succeeding rainfall by 6 hours and more. Among the defined single storms, 1199 storms exceeding total rainfall of 80 mm were qualified for the study. Storm patterns were cklassified by quartile classification method and the relationship between cummulative percent of rainfalls and cummulative storm time was established for each quartile storm group. Time distribution models for each stations were prepared through the various analytical and inferential procedures. Obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. The percentile frequency of quartile storms for the first to the fourth quartile were 22.0%, 26.5%, 28.9% and 22.6%, respectively. The large variation of percentile frequency was show between the same quartile storms. The advanced type storm pattern was predominant in the west coastal type storm patterns predominantly when compared to the single storms with small total rainfalls. 3. The single storms with long storm durations tended to show delayed type storm patterns predominantly when compared to the single storms with short storm durations. 4. The percentile time distribution of quartile storms for 42 rin gaging stations was estimated. Large variations were observed between the percentiles of time distributions of different stations. 5. No significant differences were generally found between the time distribution of rainfalls with greater total rainfall and with less total rainfall. This fact suggests that the size of the total rainfall of single storms was not the main factor affecting the time distribution of heavy storms. 6. Also, no significant difference were found between the time distribution of rainfalls with long duration and with short duration. The fact indicates that the storm duration was no the main factor affecting the time distribution of heavy storms. 7. In Korea, among all single storms, 39.0% show 80 to 100mm of total rainfall which stands for the mode of the frequency distribution of total rainfalls. The median value of rainfalls for all single storms from the 42 stations was 108mm. The shape of the frequency distribution of total rainfalls showed right skewed features. No significant differences were shown in the shape of distribution histograms for total rainfall of quartile storms. The mode of rainfalls for the advanced type quartile storms was 80~100mm and their frequencies were 39~43% for respective quartiles. For the delayed type quartile storms, the mode was 80~100mm and their frequencies were 36!38%. 8. In Korea, 29% of all single storms show 720 to 1080 minutes of storm durations which was the highest frequency in the frequency distribution of storm durations. The median of the storm duration for all single storms form 42 stations was 1026 minutes. The shape of the frequency distribution was right skewed feature. For the advanced type storms, the higher frequency of occurrence was shown by the single storms with short durations, whereas for the delayed type quartile storms, the higher frequency was shown gy the long duration single storms. 9. The total rainfall of single storms was positively correlated to storm durations in all the stations throughout the nation. This fact was also true for most of the quartile storms. 10. The third order polynomial regression models were established for estimating the time distribution of quartile storms at different stations. The model test by relative error method resulted good agreements between estimated and observed values with the relative error of less than 0.10 in average.

  • The logarithmic decrement method has been long used to estimate damping ratios in systems with only one modal component such as linear single degree of freedom (SDOF) mechanical systems. This paper presents an application of a methodology that uses joint time-frequency distribution (JTFD) as input, instead of the raw signal, to systems with several vibration modes. A most important feature of the present approach is that it can be applied to a system with time-varying damping ratio. Initially the precision and robustness of the method is determined using a synthetic model with multiple harmonic components, one of them displaying a time-varying damping ratio, subsequently the results obtained from experiments with a reduced model are presented. A comparison is made between the results obtained with this methodology and those using the classical technique of Least Squares Complex Exponential Method (LSCE) in order to highlight the advantages of the former, such as, good precision, robustness and excellent performance in extreme cases, e.g., when very low frequency components and time varying damping ratio are present.

  • Conventional Fourier analysis can give only limited information about the dynamic characteristics of nonstationary signals. Instead, time-frequency analysis is widely used to investigate the nonstationary signal in detail. Several time-frequency analysis methods are compared for a typical acoustic emission burst generated during the impact between a ferrite ceramic and aluminum plate. This AE burst is inherently nonstationary and random containing many frequency contents, which leads to severe interference between cross terms in bilinear convolution type distributions. The smoothing and reassignment processes can improve the readability and resolution of the results. Spectrogram and scalogram of the AE burst are obtained and compared to get the characteristics information. Renyi entropies are computed for various bilinear time-frequency transforms to evaluate the randomness. These bilinear transforms are reassigned by using the improved algorithm in discrete computation.

  • Two impedance imaging systems of multi-frequency electrical impedance tomography (MFEIT) and magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) are described. MFEIT utilizes boundary measurements of current-voltage data at multiple frequencies to reconstruct cross-sectional images of a complex conductivity distribution (${\sigma}+i{\omega}{\varepsilon}$) inside the human body. The inverse problem in MFEIT is ill-posed due to the nonlinearity and low sensitivity between the boundary measurement and the complex conductivity. In MFEIT, we therefore focus on time- and frequency-difference imaging with a low spatial resolution and high temporal resolution. Multi-frequency time- and frequency-difference images in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 500 kHz are presented. In MREIT, we use an MRI scanner to measure an internal distribution of induced magnetic flux density subject to an injection current. This internal information enables us to reconstruct cross-sectional images of an internal conductivity distribution with a high spatial resolution. Conductivity image of a postmortem canine brain is presented and it shows a clear contrast between gray and white matters. Clinical applications for imaging the brain, breast, thorax, abdomen, and others are briefly discussed.

  • The secondary system of nuclear power plants consists of sophisticated piping systems operating in very aggressive erosion and corrosion environments, which make a piping system vulnerable to the wear and degradation due to the several chemical components and high flow rate (~10 m/sec) of the coolant. To monitor the wear and degradation on a pipe, the vibration signals are measured from the pipe with an accelerometer For analyzing the vibration signal the time-frequency analysis (TFA) is used, which is known to be effective for the analysis of time-varying or transient signals. To reduce the inteferences (cross-terms) due to the bilinear structure of the time-frequency distribution, an adaptive cone-kernel distribution (ACKD) is proposed. The cone length of ACKD to determine the characteristics of distribution is optimally selected through an adaptive algorithm using the normalized Shannon's entropy And the ACKD's are compared with the results of other analyses based on the Fourier Transform (FT) and other TFA's. The ACKD shows a better signature for the wear/degradation within a pipe and provides the additional information in relation to the time that any analysis based on the conventional FT can not provide.

  • Frequency spectrum using the conventional Fourier analysis gives adequate information about the dynamic characteristics of the slider air bearing for the linear and stationary cases. The intermittent contacts for the extremely low flying height, however, generate nonlinear and nonstationary vibration at the instant of contact. Nonlinear dynamic model should be developed to simulate the impulse response of the air bearing during slider-disk contact. Time-frequency analysis is widely used to investigate the nonstationary signal. Several time-frequency analysis methods are employed and compared for the slider vibration signal caused by the impact against an artificially induced scratch on the disk. The representative Wigner-Ville distribution leads to the severe interference problem by cross terms even though it gives good resolution both in time and frequency. The smoothing process improves the interference problem at the expense of resolution. In order to get the results with good resolution and little interference, the reassignment method is proposed. Among others the reassigned Gabor spectrogram shows the best resolution and readability with negligible interference.

  • Vibration analysis is one of the most powerful tools available for the detection and isolation of incipient faults in mechanical systems. The methods of vibration analysis in use today and under continuous study are broad band vibration monitoring, time domain analysis, and frequency domain analysis. In recent years, great interest has been generated concerning the use of time-frequency representation and its application for a machinery diagnostics and condition monitoring system. The objective of the research described in this paper was to develop a new diagnostic tool for the rotating machinery. This paper introduces a new time-frequency representation, Directional Wigner-Ville Distribution, which analyses the time- frequency structure of the rotating machinery vibration.
