This paper presents a 3-D finite difference time domain (FDTD) method used for indoor propagation simulations where the electromagnetic wav eis uniformly excited on th eone of the wall in a building and affected by an indoor obstacles. In cases of simulation and measurement, the frequency of 851 MHz is used. The conductivities of walls, floor, ceiling and indoor obstacles are measured and used for simulations. These simulations are carried out using different boundary condition such as mur's absorbing boundary condition (ABC) and perfectly matched layer (PML) technique. The PML technique is found to be well-suited to this analysis because of it's smaller computational domain than mur's ABC. The measured signal strengths are compared to simulated values with good agreement.
The increasing capabilities of the computers enable us to utilize various numerical schemes for the time-domain simulations concerned with 3-dimensional free-surface wave problems. There are still difficulties to solve such kind of problems, however. That's because long time simulations with large computational domain are needed in time-domain analysis. So, we need faster and more efficient numerical schemes to get the solutions practically for these problems. In this paper, a high-order spectral/boundary-element method is used for the numerical investigation of physics involved in wave-body interaction. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear gravity waves can be simulated and hydrodynamic forces also can be calculated in time-domain. To get the robust study in these topics, various numerical tests are performed and compared with others' works.
In this paper, two automatic mesh generation algorithms are presented. The methods seek to optimize mesh density with regard to geometries exhibiting both fine and coarse physical structures. When generating meshes, the algorithms attempt to satisfy the conditions on the maximum mesh spacing and the maximum grading ratio simultaneously. Both algorithms successfully produce non-uniform meshes that satisfy the requirements for finite-difference time-domain simulations of microwave components. Additionally, an algorithm successfully generates a minimum number of grid points while maintaining the simulation accuracy.
The dynamic response of two-dimensional unbounded domain on the rigid bedrock in the time domain is numerically obtained. It is realized by the modified scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) in which the original scaling center is replaced by a scaling line. The formulation bases on expanding dynamic stiffness by using the continued fraction approach. The solution converges rapidly over the whole time range along with the order of the continued fraction increases. In addition, the method is suitable for large scale systems. The numerical method is employed which is a combination of the time domain SBFEM for far field and the finite element method used for near field. By using the continued fraction solution and introducing auxiliary variables, the equation of motion of unbounded domain is built. Applying the spectral shifting technique, the virtual modes of motion equation are eliminated. Standard procedure in structural dynamic is directly applicable for time domain problem. Since the coefficient matrixes of equation are banded and symmetric, the equation can be solved efficiently by using the direct time domain integration method. Numerical examples demonstrate the increased robustness, accuracy and superiority of the proposed method. The suitability of proposed method for time domain simulations of complex systems is also demonstrated.
The underlying ground state of a railway plays a significant role in maintaining the integrity of the overlying concrete slab and ultimately supporting the train load. While effective nondestructive tests have been used to evaluate the rail track system, they can only be performed during non-operating time due to the stress wave generated by active sources. In this study, finite element numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the feasibility of detecting unfavorable substructure conditions by using a moving train load. First, a train load module is developed by converting the train load into time-variant equivalent forces. The moving forces based on the shape functions are applied at the nodes. A parametric study that takes into account the bonding state and the train class is then performed. All the synthetic signals obtained from numerical simulations are analyzed at the frequency domain using a Fast Fourier transform (FFT) and at the time-frequency domain using a Short-Time Fourier transform (STFT). The presence of a void condition amplifies the acceleration amplitude and the vibration response. This study confirms the feasibility of using a moving train load to systematically evaluate a rail track system.
Analysis of ship parametric roll has generally been restricted to simple analytical models and sophisticated time domain simulations. Simple analytical models do not capture all the critical dynamics while time-domain simulations are often time consuming to implement. The model presented in this paper captures the essential dynamics of the system without over simplification. This work incorporates various important aspects of the system and assesses the significance of including or ignoring these aspects. Special consideration is given to the fact that a hull form asymmetric about the design waterline would not lead to a perfectly harmonic variation in metacentric height. Many of the previous works on parametric roll make the assumption of linearized and harmonic behaviour of the time-varying restoring arm or metacentric height. This assumption enables modelling the roll motion as a Mathieu equation. This paper provides a critical assessment of this assumption and suggests modelling the roll motion as a Hills equation. Also the effects of non-linear damping are included to evaluate its effect on the bounded parametric roll amplitude in a simplified manner.
Recently moored offshore vessels like as FPSO(Floating Production Storage Offloading) are frequently deployed in seas for a long time. For successful operation, the motion behavior of such a vessel in waves must be clarified in advance either theoretically or experimentally. It is of particular interest to examine the behavior, when swells are superposed to seas with different incident angle. Such a situation is actually reported in some offshore oilfield. In this paper, the motion of a FPSO in irregular waves including swells is studied in time domain. Hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces are calculated in frequency domain using three-dimensional singularity distribution method. Time memory function and added mass at infinite frequency are derived by Fourier transform utilizing hydrodynamic damping coefficients. In the process, the numerical accuracy of added mass at infinite frequency is carefully examined in association with free decay simulations. It is found from numerical simulations that swells significantly affect the vertical motion of FPSO mainly because of their longer period compared to the ordinary sea waves. In particular, the roll motion is largely amplified because the dominant period of swell is closer to the roll natural period than that of seas.
The aim of this paper is to enhance the accuracy of predicting time-averaged external surface pressures on low-rise buildings by utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. To achieve this, benchmark studies of the Silsoe cube and the Texas Tech University (TTU) experimental building are employed for comparison with simulation results. The paper is structured into three main sections. In the initial part, an appropriate domain size is selected based on the precision of mean pressure coefficients on the windward face of the cube, utilizing Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. Subsequently, recommendations regarding the optimal computational domain size for an isolated building are provided based on revised findings. Moving on to the second part, the Silsoe cube model is examined within a horizontally homogeneous computational domain using more accurate turbulence models, such as Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and hybrid RANS-LES models. For computational efficiency, transient simulation settings are employed, building upon previous studies by the authors at the Windstorm Impact, Science, and Engineering (WISE) Lab, Louisiana State University (LSU). An optimal meshing strategy is determined for LES based on a grid convergence study. Three hybrid RANS-LES cases are investigated to achieve desired enhancements in the distribution of mean pressure coefficients on the Silsoe cube. In the final part, a 1:10 scale model of the TTU building is studied, incorporating the insights gained from the second part. The generated flow characteristics, including vertical profiles of mean velocity, turbulence intensity, and velocity spectra (small and large eddies), exhibit good agreement with full-scale (TTU) measurements. The results indicate promising roof pressures achieved through the careful consideration of meshing strategy, time step, domain size, inflow turbulence, near-wall treatment, and turbulence models. Moreover, this paper demonstrates an improvement in mean roof pressures compared to other state-of-the-art studies, thus highlighting the significance of CFD simulations in building aerodynamics.
This paper reviewed a few output-only system identification algorithms and identified the shortcomings of those popular blind source separation methods. To address the issues such as less sensors than the targeted modal modes (under-determinate problem), repeated natural frequencies as well as systems with complex mode shapes, this paper proposed a complex wavelet modified second order blind identification method (CWMSOBI) by transforming the time domain problem into time-frequency domain. The wavelet coefficients with different dominant frequencies can be used to address the under-determinate problem, while complex mode shapes are addressed by introducing the complex wavelet transformation. Numerical simulations with both high and low signal-to-noise ratios validate that CWMSOBI can overcome the above-mentioned issues while obtaining more accurate identified results than other blind identification methods.
Time domain analysis as well as frequency domain analysis of signal conditioning filters is very useful for practical applications. Time domain analysis of digital filters for noise cancelling in ECG signals is presented. Several band pass and band reject filters are designed for the analysis. Computer simulations are performed to compare the distortions of the Butterworth type filters and linear phase optimal FIR filters which are widely used for ECG signal processing. Band reject filters are applied to power line interference cancelling in ECG signals.
