  • In this paper, we propose a new estimation method of time offset, frequency offset, and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) using the synchronization channel preamble to provide IEEE 802.16.1a based talk-around direct communications (TDC). The proposed scheme estimates the time offset and frequency offset both in the time domain and in the frequency domain considering the preamble structure. In addition, it improves the estimation accuracy by combining the estimated values in two domains taking into account TDC synchronization scenarios. Through numerical simulations in the TDC channel environments, the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with those of existing techniques such as the time domain estimation and the frequency domain estimation.

  • This paper presents a time-domain based asynchronous IR-UWB ranging system. This system accomplishes the ranging by detecting peaks from the outputs of a correlator implemented by a FIR filter. To discriminate the peaks due to a signal component, we use windowing for the correlated data within which the data are sorted in amplitude-ascending order and the noise level is calculated. Comparing with the recently presented frequency-domain based ranging system, we show the system structure and explain how it operates for ranging. Moreover, through the simulations, the proposed system is compared with the frequency-domain based system in terms of performance.

  • This paper proposes an enhanced scheme adding a sign detector at the front of the correlator in STDR (sequence time domain reflectometry) system. We have executed simulations to show the improvement of detection performance in two fault types and various fault locations. Consequently, it can be shown that the proposed scheme improves the detection performance of the location of far-fault without increasing the computational complexity.

  • In this paper, a new signature verification method is proposed. In the proposed method, on-line signature features are decomposed into multi-level signals by using the discrete wavelet transform, and then they are verified using the adaptive algorithm in time-frequency domain. Through computer simulations, the effectiveness of the proposed method is examined.

  • Hilbert Transform has been used for detection of nonlinearity in modal analysis. HTD(Hilbert Transform Describers) are used to quantify and identify nonlinearity. Mottershead and Stanway method for identification of N-th power velocity nonlinear damping are extended to P-th power displacement stiffness, N-th power velocity damping and dry friction. Time domain and frequency domain data are used and HTD and Mottershead methods are combined for identification of nonlinear parameters in this paper. Computer simulations and experimental results are shown to verify nonlinear structure identification methods.

  • High Level Architecture/Run-Time Infrastructure (HLA/RTI) is used to connect individual simulators on networks in order to interoperate heterogeneous simulators. In defense domain, Ship Air Defense Model (SADM) and Extended Air Defense Simulation (EADSIM) are two of most advanced simulation tools. To interoperate these SADM and EADSIM, this paper attempts to use HLA/RTI that helps to support a Composite Combat Mission Planning Simulation Environment (CCMPSE). The CCMPSE allows us to analyze a group of simulations for comprehensive and accurate experiments. For the first time, this paper analyzes guided missile simulations in EADSIM and SADM by comparing related simulation models in their parameters and considerations. It presents characteristics of these models in view of guided missile simulation perspectives. For the contributions of this paper, it provides insights to select guided missiles between SADM and EADSIM on the CCMPSE according to specific simulation purposes.

  • In this paper the problem of calculating the probability that the responses of a wind-excited structure exceed specified thresholds within a given time interval is considered. The failure domain of the problem can be expressed as a union of elementary failure domains whose boundaries are of quadratic form. The Domain Decomposition Method (DDM) is employed, after being appropriately extended, to solve this problem. The probability estimate of the overall failure domain is given by the sum of the probabilities of the elementary failure domains multiplied by a reduction factor accounting for the overlapping degree of the different elementary failure domains. The DDM is extended with the help of Line Sampling (LS), from its original presentation where the boundary of the elementary failure domains are of linear form, to the current case involving quadratic elementary failure domains. An example involving an along-wind excited steel building shows the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed methodology as compared with that obtained using standard Monte Carlo simulations (MCS).

  • In medical ultrasound imaging systems, Side lobes may appear if signals outside the imaging point are not completely removed during receive focusing. If the time signal of the side lobe overlaps with the time signal (main lobe) from the image point, it is difficult to completely remove it using filter processing in the time domain. However, In the receive focusing process, when time-channel signals are Fourier-transformed, the main lobe and side lobe signals are spatially separated in the spectral domain. Therefore, the side lobes can be suppressed by multiplying the image with magnitude weights, which are determined by the magnitudes of the main and side lobes calculated in the spectral domain. In addition, when the main lobe and the side lobe spectrum are adjacent, the distance weight was applied based on the distance between them. In a 5 MHz ultrasound imaging system using a 64-channel linear transducer, point reflector and speckle images with cysts of various brightness were synthesized and weights were applied to the ultrasound image. Using computer simulations, we confirmed that the side lobes were greatly reduced without affecting the spatial resolution in the point reflector image, and the contrast was significantly improved in the cyst image with computer simulations.

  • Inter-domain routing is the most critical function of the Internet. The routing system is a logical network relying on the physical infrastructure with geographical characteristics. Nature disasters or disruptive accidents such as earthquakes, cable cuts and power outages could cause regional failures which fail down geographically co-located network nodes and links, therefore, affect the resilience of inter-domain routing system. This paper presents a model for regional failures in inter-domain routing system called REFER for the first time. Based on REFER, the resilience of the inter-domain routing system could be evaluated on a finer level of the Internet, considering different routing policies of intra-domain and inter-domain routing systems. Under this model, we perform simulations on an empirical topology of the Internet with geographical characteristics to simulate a regional failure locating at a city with important IXP (Internet eXchange Point). Results indicate that the Internet is robust under a city-level regional failure. The reachability is almost the same after the failure, and the reroutings occur at the edge of the Internet, hardly affecting the core of inter-domain routing system.

  • A coupled analysis of a floating crane barge with a crane wire and hanging structure is carried out in thetime domain. The motion analysis of the crane barge is based on the floating multi-body dynamics, and thecrane wire is modeled as a simple spring tension. The hanging structure is assumed to be a rigid body with 3 degree-of-freedom translational motion. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted at three different stages. First, the developed code was validated by comparing the time-domain motion response of a crane barge with the frequency-domain results. Then, a coupled analysis of a crane barge and simple structure hanging by the crane wire was performed using the present scheme. The motion response and wire tension from the present calculations are compared with the results of OrcaFlex. The agreement between the two sets of results isfairly good. Last, lowering simulations in regular and irregular waves were conducted considering buoyancy changes in the hanging structure. The effects of the wave conditions, structure's weight, wire length, and lowering speed on the wire tension are considered.
