Laboratory creep experiments show that compaction of unconsolidated shale is an irrecoverable process caused by viscous time-dependent deformation. Using Perzyna's viscoplasticity framework combined with the modified Cam-clay theory, we found the constitutive equation expressed in the form of strain rate as a power law function of the ratio between the sizes of dynamic and static yield surfaces. We derived the volumetric creep strain at a constant hydrostatic pressure level as a logarithmic function of time, which is in good agreement with experimental results. The determined material constants indicate that the yield stress of the shale increases by 6% as strain rate rises by an order of magnitude. This demonstrates that the laboratory-based prediction of yield stress (and porosity) may result in a significant error in estimating the properties in situ.
Silver nanoparticles production by the green chemistry approach was investigated using an isolated marine actinomycetes strain. The isolated strain was identified as Streptomyces albidoflavus based on chemotaxonomic and ribotyping properties. The strain revealed production of silver nanoparticles both extracellular and intracellularly. Surface Plasmon Resonance analysis with the function of time revealed that particle synthesis by this strain is reaction time dependent. The produced particles were spherical shaped and monodispersive in nature and showed a single surface plasmon resonance peak at 410 nm. Size distribution histograms indicated production of 10-40-nm-size nanoparticles with a mean size of 14.5 nm. FT-IR spectra of nanopartilces showed N-H, C-H, and C-N stretching vibrations, denoting the presence of amino acid/peptide compounds on the surface of silver nanoparticles produced by S. albidoflavus. Synthesized nanoparticles revealed a mean negative zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility of -8.5 mV and -0.000066 $cm^2/Vs$, respectively. The nanoparticles produced were proteinaceous compounds as capping agents with -8.5 mV zeta potential and revealed antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and -positive bacterial strains. Owing to their small size, these particles have greater impact on industrial application spectra.
The rate-controlling mechanisms for time-dependent plastic deformation of eutectoid and hyper-eutectoid pearlitic steels at low $T/T_m$ temperatures were explored. The strain rate - stress data obtained from a series of constant load tensile tests at $0.25{\sim}0.30T/T_m$ were applied to the power law, the lattice friction controlled plasticity, and the obstacle controlled plasticity. Of these models, the obstacle controlled plasticity was found to best-describe the rate-controlling mechanism for time-dependent plastic deformation of two steels at low $T/T_m$ temperatures in terms of the activation energy for overcoming the obstacles against dislocation glide in ferrite. The deformed microstructures revealed the dislocation forests of a high density as the main obstacles. In addition, the obstacle controlled plasticity well-explained the effects of cementite on the $0^{\circ}K$ flow stress of two steels.
This research investigated the nonlinear compressibility, permeability, the yielding due to structural degradation and their effects on consolidation behavior of structured soft soils. Based on oedometer and hydraulic conductivity test results of natural and reconstituted soft clays, linear log (1+e) ~ $log\;{\sigma}^{\prime}$ and log (1+e) ~ $log\;k_v$ relationships were developed to capture the variations in compressibility and permeability, and the yield stress ratio (YSR) was introduced to characterize the soil structure of natural soft clay. Semi-analytical solutions for one-dimensional consolidation of soft clay under time-dependent loading incorporating the effects of soil nonlinearity and soil structure were proposed. The semi-analytical solutions were verified against field measurements of a well-documented test embankment and they can give better accuracy in prediction of excess pore pressure compared to the predictions using the existing analytical solutions. Additionally, parametric studies were conducted to analyze the effects of YSR, compression index (${\lambda}_r$ and ${\lambda}_c$), and permeability index (${\eta}_k$) on the consolidation behavior of structured soft clays. The magnitude of the difference between degree of consolidation based on excess pore pressure ($U_p$) and that based on strain ($U_s$) depends on YSR. The parameter ${\lambda}_c/{\eta}_k$ plays a significant role in predicting consolidation behavior.
A tunable fiber laser and the Quadrature Sampling technique are used to construct highly sensitive fiber-optic distributive Bragg grating strain sensor system. By using a wavelength-modulated fiber laser, the variations of strain-dependent Bragg wavelengths are transformed into the variations of time-domain reflection profiles. The locations of profile peaks that correspond to the applied strains are demodulated using a precise wavelength encoder that uses a fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer and Quadrature Sampling technique. With the extremely high sensitive optical encoder, we could obtain not only high sensitivity, but also very linear responses that was impossible with the conventional techniques. This paper is attempted to report the theoretical and experimental results.
The purpose of this study was to explore the dynamics of stepfamilies and the adjustment difficulties such families may experience. The study describes some sociodemographic characteristics of a sample of 117 stepfamilies. The independent variables were stresses due to adjustment difficulties, which were defined as "role strains". Sociodemographic variables included gender, family income level, length of time since remarriage, type of stepfamily, and the existence of any children born to the new marriage. The dependent variable was the extent of stepfamily adjustment, expressed as a scale. The factors influencing family adjustment included stepparent gender, family income level, type of stepfamily, and various role strain variables (family boundary ambiguity, role conflict, etc.). Practical recommendations for social work are made and possibilities for future research in this area are discussed based on the results of this study.
This paper describes an experimental investigation of how time-dependent deformations of high strength concretes are affected by maximum size of coarse aggregate, curing time, and relatively low sustained stress level. A set of high strength concrete mixes, mainly containing two different maximum sizes of coarse aggregate, have been used to investigate drying shrinkage and creep strain of high strength concrete for 7 and 28-day moist cured cylinder specimens. Based upon one-year experimental results, drying shrinkage of high strength concrete was significantly affected by the maximum size of coarse aggregate at early age, and become gradually decreased at late age. The larger the maximum size of coarse aggregate in high strength concrete shows the lower the creep strain. The prediction equations for drying shrinkage and creep coefficient were developed on the basis of the experimental results, and compared with existing prediction models.

A ${\beta}$-glucosidase producing yeast strain was isolated from Korean traditional rice wine. Based on the sequence of the YCL008c gene and analysis of the fatty acid composition, the isolate was identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain HJ-014. S. cerevisiae HJ-014 produced ginsenoside Rd, $F_2$, and compound K from the ethanol extract of red ginseng. The production was increased by shaking culture, where the bioconversion efficiency was increased 2-fold compared to standing culture. The production of ginsenoside $F_2$ and compound K was time-dependent and thought to proceed by the transformation pathway of: red ginseng extract ${\rightarrow}Rd{\rightarrow}F_2{\rightarrow}$ compound K. The optimum incubation time and concentration of red ginseng extract for the production of compound K was 96 hr and 4.5% (w/v), respectively.
The objective of this paper is to predict and evaluate the sealing performance of the thermoplastic rubber component in the proto-design stage. The large strain and large deformation properties of rubber are modeled by strain energy function and the related material constants are calculated from the test data. The viscoelastic property of the rubber is also considered using the coefficients in a Prony series representation of a viscoelastic modulus ken the compression stress relaxation test. The results show that the current design of cap mount system has 2-different stiffness caused by the cap-mount contact and the viscoelastic property of rubber plays an important role in time dependent deformation.
The KLCC Petronas Tower 2, one of the world tallest twin reinforced concrete towers constructed in Kuala Lumpur, Malysia, was instrumented during construction for the measurement of vertical time-dependent deformation of columns and corewall. Field measurements were made by means of vibrating wire strain gauges at the corewall, tower and bustle perimeter columns at selected floor levels of the building. Parallel to this observation, laboratory tests were performed on concrete cylinders made in the field in order to obtain the variations of concrete compressive strengths, elastic moduli, strains of creep and shrinkage with time. Monitored vertical deformations are in a good agreement with the prediction based on actual construction sequence and concrete properties from laboratory tests, as well as the analytical results reflected in actual column compensation of the building.
