  • The spatial focusing of time reversal Lamb waves on a plate has attracted considerable attention for identifying the location of an input source. This study investigates the spatial focusing performance on a plate with respect to the number of piezoelectric (PZT) sensors for varying locations of input sources. In particular, a small number of PZT sensors produce spatial focusing through the virtual sensor effect due to reflection of Lamb waves at plate edges. The spatial focusing performance with respect to the number of PZT sensors is quantified in terms of signal to noise ratio through numerical simulation and its implication is discussed.

  • In this paper, damage detection method by using the time reversal is developed to detect damage on composit structures. The time reversal was investigated for direct root between PZT and PZT, but in case of a circular PZT, lamb wave moves not only along the direct root but also another roots. The center frequency of lamb wave is kept when the lamb waves are reflected from damage. This paper presents experimental and theoretical results for the new structural health monitoring method by above features of lamb wave, and we can increase accuracy of the new structural health monitoring method by using STFT(Short Time Fourier Transform).

  • This paper proposes a baseline-free SHM technique in which the time-reversal process of Lamb waves and the imaging method are used. The proposed SHM technique has three distinct features when compared with the authors' previously proposed one: (1) It use the reconstructed signal for damage diagnosis, without need to extract the damage signal as the difference between reconstructed signal and initial input signal; (2) It use the imaging method based on the time-offlight information from the reconstructed signal, instead of using a pattern comparison method; (3) In order to make the damage image more clear, the modified mathematical definition of damage image in a pixel is used. The proposed SHM technique is evaluated through the damage detection experiment for an aluminum plate with damage at different locations.

  • A structural health monitoring (SHM) technique for locating impact position in a composite plate is presented in this paper. The technique employs a single sensor and spatial focusing properties of time reversal (TR) and inverse filtering (IF). We first examine the focusing effect of back-propagated signal at the impact position and its surroundings through simulation. Impact experiments are then carried out and the localization images are found using the TR and IF signal processing, respectively. Both techniques provide accurate impact location results. Compared to existing techniques for locating impact or acoustic emission source, the proposed methods have the benefits of using a single sensor and not requiring knowledge of material properties and geometry of structures. Furthermore, it does not depend on a particular mode of dispersive Lamb waves that is frequently used in the SHM of plate-like structures.

  • An experimental study has been made with the use of time reversal concepts to recover the input waveform in a long range propagation of dispersive Lamb waves. Three techniques have been tested: Regular TR, 1 bit TR and Inverse filter (IF). The IF approach was found to completely recover the original input signal. Moreover, the IF technique significantly increases the contrast, i.e., the ratio of the recovered signal and the sideband signal.

The method employs a single sensor and spatial focusing properties of time reversal(TR) and inverse filtering(IF). We first examine the spatial focusing efficiency of both approaches at the impact position and its surroundings through impact experiments. • It is known that change in the bone strength of cortical bone constituting the outer shell of long bones such as the tibia or radius due to aging and osteoporosis is a risk factor for fracture. In this study, the group velocity of time-reversed Lamb waves generated in tibial cortical bone in vivo was measured using a time reversal method, and the correlations of the group velocity with the cortical bone thickness (cTh) and cortical bone mineral density (cBMD) closely related to the bone strength were investigated. It was found that the group velocity of time-reversed Lamb waves measured in the right tibia of 7 subjects showed a very high correlation, r = 0.90 (p < 0.0001), with the cTh and a relatively low correlation, r = 0.69 (p < 0.0001), with the cBMD. A limitation of this in vivo study is that the group velocity of time-reversed Lamb waves was measured for a normal group consisting of only 7 healthy adults. In the future, if the clinical usefulness of the time-reversed Lamb wave is demonstrated by follow-up studies on normal and osteoporotic groups consisting of a large number of healthy adults and osteoporotic patients, respectively, it is expected to improve the reliability of quantitative ultrasound technology for osteoporosis diagnosis. In addition, it is necessary to expand the skeletal site for measuring the group velocity of time-reversed Lamb waves not only to the tibia but also to the femur or radius.
