  • The need for developing a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in tilting pad proceeding bearings has been well-recognized, since previous experimental work about the performances of the bearings hypothesized that the friction in the bearings is closely related to their performances. Especially, the sliding friction between pad and pivot in the ball and socket type of the bearings can influence the performance of the bearing. We propose a mathematical model for pad-pivot friction in the ball and socket type, which considers the geometrics of the pad and pivot of the bearings, by assuming the sliding friction in the ball and socket bearing as Coulomb friction. By utilizing the proposed model for pad-pivot friction, we show the analysis of Reynolds equation and energy equation, which explain the thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics of tilting pad proceeding bearings, by taking into account the turbulence and inlet pressure building as well. The results of the study show that the performance of titling-pad proceeding bearings can be greatly influenced by the pad-pivot friction. In particular, we have shown that the analysis of the pad-pivot friction is useful to explain the static proceeding loci and the dynamic characteristics of the ball and socket type of the bearings. Furthermore, for a given operating condition, we can obtain various equilibrium states which satisfy the static equilibrium conditions, by considering the pad-pivot friction.

  • In this paper the linearized stiffness and damping coefficients of tilting pad thrust bearing are calculated by the perturbation method. The coefficients are obtained for a wide range of pivot positions. The effects of exciting frequency and pad mass on stiffness and damping coefficients are investigated. Critical frequencies due to the tilting motions of the pad are presented and are shown to be strongly influenced by the pivot position and the pad mass.

  • In the preceding Part I study, for improving the unbalance response vibration of a large PRT motor-generator rotor fundamentally by design, a series of design analyses were carried out for bearing improvement by retrofitting from original plain partial journal bearings, applied for operation at a rated speed of 1,800 rpm, to final tilting pad journal bearings. To satisfy evenly key basic lubrication performances such as the minimum lift-off speed and maximum oil-film temperature, a design solution of 5-pad tilting pad journal bearings and maximizing the direct stiffness by about two times has been achieved. In this Part II study, a detailed rotordynamic analysis of the large PRT motor-generator rotor-bearing system will be performed, applying both the original plain partial journal bearings and the retrofitted tilting pad journal bearings, to confirm the effect of rotordynamic vibration improvement after retrofitting. The results show that the rotor unbalance response vibrations with the tilting pad journal bearings are greatly reduced by as much as about one ninth of those with the plain partial journal bearings. In addition, for the tilting pad journal bearings there exist no critical speed up to the rated speed and just one instance of a concerned critical speed around the rated speed, whereas for the plain partial journal bearings there exist one instance of a critical speed up to the rated speed and two instances of concerned critical speeds around the rated speed.

  • Tilling pad journal bearings have been widely used to support the rotors of the high rotating machinery such as steam and gas turbines owing to their inherent dynamic stability characteristics. However, serious bearing problems such as fatigue damage in the upper unloaded pad, the break of locking pins and the wear of pinholes etc. by pad fluttering are frequently taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mechanism of pad fluttering and to suggest the useful design guideline(application of preload, m) for the purpose of preventing bearing problems by pad fluttering in a tilting pad journal bearing. It is estimated that upper pad is easy to flutter because the film shape of the upper pad is diverged by moment acting on pivot point. This paper suggests that effective preload range(m $\geq$ 0.5) in order to be statically loaded pad under all operating conditions. Also, design modified bearing is suggested for the adjustment in actual steam turbines. And bearing and rotor dynamic analysis are performed to identify bearing characteristics and to verify the reliability of rotor-bearing system.

  • The static and dynamic stability analysis of air-lubriceted tilting pad journal bearing which considers tilting effect of each pad and preload but neglects pad inertia were performed. And these characteristic analysis were performed with elasticity effect too. A direct numerical method is used in calculating the static characteristics such as load carrying capacity, firction force and perturbation method is used for calculation of dynamic characteristics. The stability analysis was performed with the variation of bearing number, eccentricity ratio and attitude angle considering pad elasticity effect.

  • This paper describes the fluttering characteristics of the upper pad in a tilting pad journal bearing(6-pad, LOP type) using a steam turbine. In order to investigate the phenomena of the upper pad fluttering experimentally, the absolute vibration of the upper pads, the relative vibration between bearing and shaft and the circumferential distribution of the film thickness are measured under the different values of supply oil flow rate, shaft speed and bearing load. It can be known that the fluttering mechanism of the upper pads has a tendency of the self-excited vibration from the study of fluttering frequencies and amplitudes with the change of shaft speed. Furthermore, it is observed that the incipient upper pad fluttering velocity is increased by the increase of oil supply flow rate and the fluttering amplitude of the upper pads is increased by the decrease of the ell flow rate and by the increase of the bearing load.

  • Self-equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings are usually employed in turbomachines to achieve high stability and reliability. A tilting pad bearing can incorporate self-equalizing links to handle the misalignment between the bearing and the thrust collar. In this popular design method, the pads sit on the upper-level plates and the lower-level plates stay on the retainer base. With misalignment, the pads that are heavily loaded are pushed down. Consequently, the link pushes up the pads on the opposite side, keeping the bearing surface parallel to the thrust collar surface. The self-equalizing link is used to handle the misalignment from the thermal and mechanical effects. In this study, the experimental investigation deals with the performance of self-equalizing tilting pad thrust bearings. The test rig for evaluating the performance of bearing is developed which can control the misalignment angle. Simultaneous measurements are taken for the force acting on each pad. Pad metal temperature and oil film thickness are functions of the shaft speed, bearing load, misalignment angle, and design of leveling plates. The effect of misalignment on bearing performance is discussed. The results demonstrate that the load on each pad depends on the test conditions(especially misalignment angle), and the load influences the performance of bearings.

  • In this paper, seismic responses of large tilting pad journal bearings which have $3\~5$ tilting pads were numerically analyzed. The turbulent lubrication equation, the energy equation and motion equation were solved at each time step. The regime of operation of this bearing is laminar, turbulent and transitional. Also viscosity of working fluid was considered as function of only temperature and inlet pressure build-up was considered. Numerical results for a large tilting pad journal bearing showed journal center, maximum temperature, maximum pressure, friction torque. The relationship of bearing response and seismic intensity are discussed.
