  • In order to observe the factors affecting light utilization efficiency in the canopy of a rice crop grown in reclaimed saline areas in Korea, 22 varieties of rice were cultured at the average salt concentration of 6.05mmhos/cm $25^{\circ}C$, (0.39%) in saline soils and non-saline silty loam soils. The inhibition of tillering ability by salt damage at the maximum tillering stage was greater than to growth in height. A significant direct correlation was observed between both ratios and salt concentration with each variety. In the salty areas the length of the flag leaf of the maturing stage showed a positive correlation with the production of rough rice while other living leaf showed a negative correlation. LAI of maturing stage was less in the salty area than in the non-salty area, while the former showed higher ratio in net assimilation and translocation to head with greater RGR before and after the heading stage.

  • This study was carried out to find a new corn cultivar with multiple tillers that is suitable for forage. Materials were developed at the Corn Breeding Laboratory of Chungnam National University. A total of 3,650 accessions were collected domestically and from other countries, including China. Among them, 16 CNU inbreds, tillering and non-tillering, were compared to each other in terms of stem heigh, number of tillers, fresh weight, and dry weight per plant. Of these surveyed traits, the stem heigh at tasseling stage was 140~190 cm and number of tillers per plant ranged from two to four. Fresh weight and dry weight of these lines were higher in the tillered than in the non-tillered sample.

  • This study was intended to investigate the temporal and spatial variabilities of dry matter, nitrogen content, chlorophyll of paddy rice and yield caused by different rates of nitrogen application. An experimental field was divided into 45 plots of 3.48 ${\times}$ 12 m in size and application rate of nitrogen varied from 0 to 235% with an increment of 25% based on the standard rate of N-P$_2$O$_{5}$-K$_2$O=12-8-8 kg/10a. The measurements were made 8 times every 9-10 days after the transplanting. About 60 days after the transplanting, there exhibited little variabilities in the dry matter caused by different rates of nitrogen application. After that. however, there showed large variabilities and the dry matter increased with the application rate. The nitrogen content of paddy also increased with the application rate but it was inconsistent. After the tillering period, the nitrogen content remained constant. In the early stage of the tillering period the nitrogen content decreased in spite of increase in the dry matter. However. after a certain period of time it increased with the dry matter. There were little variabilities of chlorophyll after the transplanting. However, the SPAD increased with application rate of nitrogen as the paddy grew. After the tillering period SPAD was not affected by the different rates. More yield was obtained at the plots where larger nitrogen content was measured.d.

  • An experiment was conducted to study the dffects of fertilizers on maize tillering. Hybrids used were non-tillering hybrid, Nangano No.1, one of the leading hybrids in Japan and tillering hybrids, IK$_1$ /IRI develored at the Dept. of Agronomy, College of Agriculture, Chungnam National Univ., Taejon, Korea. The experiment was conducted at Dottori Prefecture in Japan. Four fertilizer levels, i. e., standard level, half amount of standard level, standard level plus composts and standard level plus two times of composts currently recommended for farmers were used. Higher fertilizer levels were effective for increasing plant weight of both hybrids. All fresh weight as well dry weight of the whole plants and plant parts of IK$_1$/IRI were higher than those of Nangano No. 1, regardless of fertilizers applied mainly due to the tiller development. The number of tillers per plant of IK$_1$/IRI was increased as the level of fertilizer was increased. Especially in sandy soil, composts seemed to be very effective in increasing tiller number per plant of IK$_1$/IRI.

  • The effects of two Cytozyme complexes, Crop Plus and Seed Plus, applied to rice (variety: Jinheung) were evaluated during the 1980 rice growing season. Primary objectives were directed to determine the effects of rates, timing and method of application of the products on the yield of rice. For the Seed Plus test, seed was soaked in the diluted Seed Plus solution(1 : 100) for 24 hours just prior to sowing. The Crop Plus was diluted to 1 : 12 for seedling treatment. Seedling roots were immersed in the diluted solution for 3 hours before transplanting. Crop Plus spray applied at the rates of 450ml/ha or 900ml/ha when rice plants were in the panicle initiation, heading or tillering stage respectively to compare the effects of rates and timing of application. The weather was not favorable for rice growth during the growing season except the tillering stage. The foliar spray at the tillering stage was more effective than the spray at the panicle initiation, and the rates of 900ml/ha showed better results than 450ml/ha. Combination of seed treatment and foliar spray increased grain yield by 16% over untreated control plots.
