  • The aerial parts of tile Garland (Chrysanthemum comnarium L.) were extracted in MeOH and solvent fractionated with EtOAc, n-BuOH and water, successively. EtOAc fractions gave three steroid compounds through application of silica gel column chromatographies. The chemical structures of the steroids were determined by the interpretation of several spectral data, including NMR and MS as $stigmast-5-en-3{\beta}-ol\;(1,\;{\beta}-sitosterol),\;stigmast-4-en-6{\beta}-ol-3-one$ (2), $stigmast-4-en-6{\alpha}-ol-3-one$ (3). Compounds 2 and 3 have been so far reported only in the aquatic plants, were isolated for the first time from the land plants.

  • Treatability tests were conducted to study the feasibility of EMMC process as a recycling-water treatment system in high density seawater aquaculture farm. To study the effect of organic and ammonia nitrogen loading rate on system performance, hydraulic retention time was reduced gradually from 12hr to 10min. The conclusions are can be summarized as follows. When the system HRT was reduced from 12hr to 2hr gradually, there was little noticeable change(reduction) in ammonia nitrogen removal efficiencies. However, removal efficiencies were decreased dramatically when the system was operated under the HRT of less than 2hr. In case of organics(COD), there was no dramatic change in removal efficiencies depending on HRT reduction. COD removal efficiencies were maintained successfully higher than 9% when the system was operated at tile HRT of 10 min. System performances depending on media packing ratio in the reactors were also evaluated. There were little differences in each reactor performances depending on media packing ratio in reactor when the reactors were operated under the HRT of longer than 1hr. However, differences in reactor performances were considerably evident when the reactors were operated under the HRT of shorter than 1hr. When comparing reactor performance among 25%, 50%,7 5% packed reactor, it can be judged that media packing ratio more than 50% plays no significant role in increasing reactor performance. For this reason, packing the media less than 50% is more reasonable way in view of economic. Such a tendency shown in COD removal efficiencies well agreed with the variation of ammonia-nitrogen removal efficiencies according to the media packing ratio in reactors at each HRT. Difference in effluent ammonia-nitrogen concentration between 50% media packing reactor and 75% media packing reactor was negligible. When comparing with the results of 25% packing reactor, difference was not so great.

  • In vitro experiments, several fungicides including prochloraz, tebuconazole, fluazinam, fludioxonil, and iminoctadine-triacetate showed more than 85% inhibition of mycelial growth of Pestalotiopsis theae (SP-3). Dichlofluanid and chlorothalonil inhibited mycelial growth at the rate of 10 and 33%, however benomyl did not inhibit mycelial growth of the fungus. Minimum inhibitory concentration(MICs) of iminictadine-triacetate on the mycelial growth of SP-3 isolate was $10{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, but that of P. theae $\underline{MAFF}$ 752002 and P. longiseta $\underline{MAFF}$ 752001 was $1{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. MIC of benomyl, chlorothalonil, dichlorofluanid was $1,000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, and that of fludioxonil, fluazinam, tebuconazole was $10{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Conidial germination was inhibited more than 80% in tile medium which contained $1{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of prochloraz, tebuconazole, fluazinam, fludioxonil, and minoctadine-triacetate. Control values of benomyl, chlorothalonil and dichlofluanid were 40, 60 and 30%, respectively. The controlling effect of iminoctadine-triacetate ($10{\mu}g/m{\ell}$) aganist P. theae (SP-3) in leaf disc test was more than 93%, but benomyl and dichlofluanid could not control leaf blight disease caused by P. theae (SP-3). Tebuconazole, fluazinam, fludioxonil, and iminoctadine-triacetate showed more than 94% of protective and curative effect of leaf blight of sweet persimmon, while, benomyl and dichlofluanid did not show any control effect of the disease.

  • A series of new 2-benzoyl-3-phenyl-2,5-dihydroisoxazol-5-one, (A) and 3-phenyl-5-phenylcarbonyl-oxyisoxazole, (B) derivatives as substrates were synthesized and their quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) analyses between the antifungal activities ($pI_{50}$) and physicochemical parameters of substituents onl the benzoyl group against resistant (RPC:95CC7303) and sensitive (SPC:95CC7105) Phytophthora blight (Phytophthora capsici,) were studied. The synthetic yield (%) and antifungal activities of (A) were higher than (B) and selectivities between the fungi were not showed. From the basis on the Hansch-Fujita analyses, the optimum width values ($(B_2)_{opt.}=ca.\;4.00{\AA}$) of the substituents on the benzoyl group were important factor in determining fungicidal activity against the two fungi. Influence of the substituents as electron withdrawing group on the fungicidal activity against RPC, but not for SPC. And tile bromo- and acetyl-substituents were contributed to higher antifungal activity against RPC and SPC from the results of Free-Wilson analyses.

  • The adsorption and leaching of organophosphorus pesticide, EPN (O-ethyl-O-4 -nitrophenyl phenyl phosphonothioate) were investigated in Namwon soil(black volcanic soil), Aewol soil(very dark brown volcanic soil) and Mureung soil(dark brown nonvolcanic soil) in Cheju Island. The residue of EPN was surveyed on coastal environment of Cheju in Aug. 1996. The organic matter of Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil was 19.8, 6.2 and 2.4%, respectively. The cation exchange capacity of Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil was 24.8, 13.0 and 9.5 meq/100 g, respectively. The Freundlich constant, k value, was 89.4, 26.9 and 9.25 for Namwon soil, Aewol soil and Mureung soil, respectively. The k value of Namwon soil with very high organic matter content and cation exchange capacity was the highest for Aewol soil and Mureung soil. The Freundlich constant, 1/n, show a high correlation with organic matter content, i.e. it is less than unity for organic matter rich soil of Namwon soil and greater than unity for organic matter poor soil of Mureung soil. The leaching of EPN was slower for Namwon soil with high k values, and faster for Mureung soil with low k values. The results of the study was demonstrated the potential of pollution for EPN have little leached into soil environment. EPN was not detected in seawater and sediment in the coastal environment in Cheju Island. EPN used in the farm on tile Cheju island were not residued in the coastal environment.

  • Pesticides are regarded as one of indispensable materials used in agriculture to protect pests and to keep the agricultural productions steadily. However, food contamination arisen from their application has brought about public concerns for safety suspicion to human health. A brief presentation is given in this paper on what has been conducted against pesticide residues to evaluate and ensure the safety of agro-porducts. The commonest countermeasures to keep safety would be tile establishment of MRls and safe-use guidelines of pesticides according to good agricultural practices. Korean MRls have been established on 38 chemicals with 56 commodities and in the case of safe-use guidelines 344 formulation items have been done by the government On the other hand, no satisfactory information is still available to evalute the actual residue levels in domestic agro-products, but a cautious proposal could be suggested through the fragmentary monitoring data of pesticide residues, so that the current residue levels would be far from potent hazard enough to cause chronic impact on human. The most important thing is to have the farmers keep safe use guidelines at pesticide application for the production of safe agricultural commodities.

  • One of the major problems in tile activated sludge system has been difficulty in separating the microbial solids from the treated effluent and in returning them to the aeration tank. Another problem has been the digestion of the excess activated sludge. In constrast, it has not been difficult to separate the microbial solids from the treated effluent from the biological fixed-film systems(RBC process, Trickling Filter, FAST process). These systems have also featured less sludge production. Recently, it was proposed to experiment with the RESMAS process in order to eliminate the settling tank and sludge concentration facilities and to reduce the quantity of excess sludge for final disposal. The effluent quality could be predicted by .the concept of the maximum accumulation capacity. However, the hydraulic characteristics of the screen media in the RESMAS reactor were not dynamic. The object of the present study is to evalute the sludge accumulation rate and effluent quality prediction in the REMSMAS process designed in the dynamic hydraulic structure. This process can eliminate the final sedimentation tank and sludge concentration tank needed in the RBC, CMAS, Trickling Filter and FAST processes. Also, the effluent quality is desirable to compare with other processes. It appeared that the value of the sludge holding capacity was higher than those of the RESMAS and FAST processes, and the periods of the critical operating time were proportional to the substrate hydraulic loadings.

  • A study on the processing of soy curd powder with soybean milk and kril autolasate has been carried out to prolong tile self life and to improve the taste and colour of soy curd. The soy curd was manufactured by coagulation of the soybean milk prepared from soybean through a series of processes of soaking, grinding, heating at $500^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes and filtration. Ten hours was reasonable as the soaking time of the soybean for the high yield of soybean milk. The use of $3\%$ $glucono-\delta-lactone$ to the weight of the raw soybean showed the best coagulation of the soybean milk at $90^{\circ}C$ in relation to the yield and content of crude protein of the soy curd. The soy curd powder prepared by spray drying of soyben milk could be coagulated at $90^{\circ}C$ by the addition of $glucono-\delta-lactone$ after suspending in water. The powder manufactured by spray drying of the mixture of soybean milk and drill autolasate could also be coagulated under the same conditions to produce the soft soy curd. Another powder prepared by spray drying of the mixture of soybean milk, krill autolysate and $glucono-\delta-lactone$ could be coagulated by standing at room temperature after 2 minutes boiling.

  • A study on tile processing of liquefied fish protein with a long self life and good solubility has been carried out for the effective utilization of sardine. The whole sadine was chopped, homogenized with same amount of water and then hydrolyzed by the addition of commercial proteolytic enzyme. The hydrolysate was centrifuged and the supernatant was decolorized with active carbon, desodorized by azeotropic distillation with toluene, xylene and cyclohexane. The liquefied sardine protein was then concentrated by rotary vacuum evaporator with the addition of starch. The use of $0.2\%$ commercial proteolytic enzyme to the weight of the whole sardine showed the optimum hydrolysis ratio at $55^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The liquefied sardine protein could be decolorized and also desodorized by the treatment with $15\%$ active carl]on at room temperature for 30 minuted. In the view point of lipid concentration and the solubility of the product, the liquefied sardine protein prepared by enzymic hydrolysis from the sardine protein concentrate was better than that prepared by enzymic hydrolysis from the whole sardine and sardine protein concentrate.
