  • The eco-hydrodynamic model was used to estimate the primary productivity of the oyster culture grounds in Kamak Bay. It is composed of the three-dimensional hydrodynamic model for the simulation of water flow and ecosystem model for the simulation of phytoplankton. The ecosystem model was applied to simulate phytoplankton biomass during culturing period in condition of no oyster culture grounds. The field surveys were conducted from May, 1994 to March, 1995 in Kamak bay. The results showed the concentration of chlorophyll $\alpha$ to be $1.00\~23.28\;{\mu}g/l$ in the surface layer, $1.27\~29.97\;{\mu}g/l$ in the middle layer and $1.23\~23.08\;{\mu}g/l$ the bottom layer. In monthly variations of chlorophyll $\alpha$ concentration, very high concentration were found in July, 1994 and very low concentrations in December, 1994. As the results of three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation, the computed tidal currents ave mainly toward the inner part of bay through Yeosu Harbor and the southern mouth of a bay during the flood tide. The computed residual currents were dominated southward in Yeosu Harbor and eastward in the mouth of bay and also showed strong clockwise water circulation at the mouth of bay. The pattern between the simulated and observed tidal ellipses at three stations was very similar. The mean relative errors of all levels between the simulated and observed phytoplankton biomass at 14 stations in Kamak Bay were $13.81\%,\;9.31\%\;and\;17.84\%$, respectively. The results of phytoplankton biomass simulation showed that the biomass increased from June to September and rapidly decreased to December and then slowly increased to March. Primary productivity was estimated in the range of $0.99\~10.20gC/m^2/d$ with the average value of $4.43gC/m^2/d$ in condition of no oyster culture grounds. Primary productivity was rapidly increased from lune to August and rapidly decreased to December and then slowly increased from January to March in Kamak Bay.

  • FLDWAV model was modified such that it can adequately simulate the effect of Jamsil and Singok submerged weirs in the main reach of the Han River. The enhanced model combines weir-type discharge equations for overflow at fixed weir and Manning equation for fluvial-type flow at the movable weir. Equations for weir overflow include those for submerged weir flow and free overflow. Gates of the movable weir may be open or closed for the simulation. In order to test the simulation capabilities, the enhanced model was applied for various flow conditions at submerged weirs. Backwater effect due to Jamsil and Singok submerged weirs were well simulated. Simulations were carried out for spring and neap tides extracted from artificial tide generated by combining $M_2\;and\;S_2$ tidal constituents. Simulation results cleared indicated that tidal effect extends further upstream as the flood discharge decreases. Low flow simulation capabilities of the enhanced model was tested. Discontinuities of water surface elevation due to the submerged weirs were successively simulated.

  • The most obvious and easily recognizable sources of potential water pollution are point sources such as domestic and industrial wastes. But recently, the potential effects of nonpoint sources on water quality have been increased apparently. In order to evaluate the characteristics and the effects of nonpoint sources on water quality, this study was performed in Suyeong Bay from May, 1992 to July, 1992. The depth-averaged 2-dimensional numerical model, which consists of the hydrodynamic model and the diffusion model was applied to simulate the water quality in Suyeong Bay. When flowrate was $65.736m^3/s,$ the concentration of pollutants (COD, TSS and VSS) at Oncheon stream (Sebeong bridge) during second flush were very high as much as 121.4mg/l of COD, 1148.0mg/l of TSS and 262.0mg/1 of VSS. When flowrate was 4.686m^3/s, the concentration of pollutants $(TIN,\;NH_4\;^+-\;N,\;NO_2\;^--N\;and\;PO_4\;^{3-}-P)$ during the first flush were very high as much as 20.306mg/1 of TIN, 14.154mg/1 of $NH_4\;^+-N$, 9.571mg/l of $NO_2\;^--N$ and l.785mg/l of $PO_2\;^{3-}-P$ As results of the hydrodynamic model simulation, the computed maximum velocity of tidal currents in Suyeong Bay was 0.3m/s and their direction was clockwise flow for ebb tide and counter clockwise flow for Hood tide. Four different methods were applied for the diffusion simulation in Suyeong Bay. There were the effects for the water quality due to point loads, annual nonpoint loads and nonpoint loads during the wet weather and the investigation period, respectively. The efforts of annual nonpoint loads and nonpoint loads during the wet weather seem to be slightly deteriorated in comparison with the effects of point loads. However, the bay was significantly polluted by the nonpoint loads during the investigation period. In this case, COD and SS concentrations ranged 2.0-30.0mg/l, 7.0- 200.0mg/l in ebb tide, respectively. From these results, it can be emphasized that the large amount of pollutants caused by nonpoint sources during the wet weather were discharged into the bay, and affected significantly to both the water quality and the marine ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the loadings of nonpoint pollutants to plan wastewater treatment plant.

  • Waterway design should prioritize appropriate channel width to ensure preferential safe passage for the arrival and departure of vessels. To calculate the minimum channel width required for safe passage a comprehensive review of several factors is required. These factors include vessel maneuverability, determined by vessel size, type and speed; environmental factors such as wind, tide, and wave action; human factors, including personal experience and operator judgment as well as marine traffic and navigation support facilities for decision making. However, the Korean channel width design standard is based only on vessel length, and requires improvement when compared with the standards of PIANC, USA, and Japan. This study aims to estimate the appropriate channel width required for one-way traffic in a straight channel, considering various vessel and environmental factors, using Fast Time Simulation (FTS). When the wind speed is 25 knots, with a current speed of 2 knots and a normal vessel speed of 10 knots FTS shows that a 150K GT Cruise Ship requires a minimum channel width of 0.67-0.91 the vessel length (L), whereas a 120K TEU Container Ship and a 300K DWT VLCC require 0.79-1.17 and 1.02-1.59, respectively. Such results can be used to calculate the minimum channel width required for safe passage as an improved Korean design standard.

  • Recently, pollution by development in coastal areas is going from bad to worse. The Korean government is attempting to make policies that prevent water pollution, but it is still difficult to say whether such measures are lowering pollution to an acceptable level. More specifically, the general investigation that has been done in KOREA does not accurately reflect the actual conditions of pollution in coastal areas. An investigation that quantitatively assesses water quality management using rational prediction technology must be attempted, and the ecosystem model, which incorporates both the 3-dimensional hydrodynamic and material cycle models, is the only one with a broad enough scope to obtain accurate results. The hydrodynamic model, which includes advection and diffusion, accounts for the ever-changing flow and (quality) of water in coastal areas, while the material cycle model accounts for pollutants and components of decomposition as sources of the carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen cycles. In this paper, we simulated the rates of dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen(T-N) and total-phosphorous(T-P) in Korea's Ulsan Area. Using the ecosystem model, we did simulations using a specific set of parameters and did comparative analysis to determine those most appropriate for the actual environmental characteristics of Ulsan Area. The simulation was successful, making it now possible to predict the likelihood of coastal construction projects causing ecological damage, such as eutrophication and red tide. Our model can also be used in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of future development projects in the ocean.

  • The weir to regulate water level in a tide generation tank is above and below carried by two electric cylinders which are mounted on right and left of weir itself. In this case, a movement difference between right and left cylinder causes unbalance of weir and friction between weir and guide. And then, the weir will not be sent to target point. In this study, a synchronous control system is developed to take accurate and quick equilibrium of the weir. The control system based on cross coupled structure consists of two I-PD controllers and a lead compensator. Each of the I-PD controllers is designed in order that the electric cylinder may exactly follow the reference signal without overshoot and input saturation. And the lead compensator is designed to achieve stable and accurate synchronization. Finally, the simulation result shows that the designed synchronous control system is effective for elimination of synchronous error.

  • Many Countries have made efforts to assist ships navigate accurately , safely and expeditiously for the safety control against increasing marine traffic , in their coastal waters. However, they are exposed in spite of these efforts,to risks of casulaties and marine polluation caused by traffic congestion when ships are navigating through waterways approaches to ports or harbors and in narrow fairways. Therefore, efficient control of VTS in Port is necessary nowadays to provide ships with necessary service , which interacts with shipping and organize the flow of traffic so as to maximize the efficiency of the port or harbor while minimizing the risk of accident and environmental pollution. Even though the navigation condition of ships is very inferior compared to other ports in Korea, such as the big difference between the ebb and flood tide, the frequent fog, the narrow fairway , the density of navigation traffic in Inchon Port is high and transportation quantity of dangerous cargoe increases gradually. In cosideration of the characteristics of natural circumstance and traffic circumstance the VTS established newly in Inchon port have to operate efficiently. The purpose of this study is to help efficient operation of VTS in Inchon port by accomplishing both the literature research and questionnaire survey. Questionnaire survey was read to the VTS personnel in Inchon Port and customer familiar to Inchon Port such as ship navigators, pilots, shipping companies and so on. Most of ship navigators who occupy half of the respondents are Korean Officer who had responded while they were calling at Inchon port. The conclusions and recommendations includes ; First, the service area should be extended over Designated area to provide the vessel with navigational assistance service regarding the information of traffic congestion area, fishing boat and small ship's activities. Second, the types of information service to be offered are ship's movement and weather condition inthe vicinity of the port and state of fairway in the approaching channel to thte fairway. Third, VTS personnel should be upgraded by the on-the-job training and continuous simulation training as well as supplement of the qualified personnel for VTS operation. Fourth , the Harbor Master System to be introduced for safe navigation and efficient port operation.

  • The spatio-temporal distribution of jellyfish in Masan Bay was investigated in this study using a numerical model. First, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model (POM) was constructed, taking into account residual flows, tides, temperature, salinity, and wind effects. A particle tracking model based on residual flow was then used to investigate the jellyfish present in Masan Port, referred to as the Heavy Industry and Gapo New Port in Masan. Jellyfish distribution was concentrated with maximum (2,533 individual) in the North Sea near Machang Bridge. Itcan be concluded that this concentration was due to multi-directional residual flows and topography effects. Residual flow currents are a dominant factor in understanding the aggregation of jellyfish, and this study used a numerical simulation of tide-induced residual currents, wind-driven currents and density currents in distinct cases to thoroughly address the topic. As a result, wind-driven currents (effect of the wind) was found to be superior to other components as an influence on the distribution of jellyfish near Machang Bridge and Modo in Masan Bay.

  • In case of constructing final closure in sea having big tide variation, the velocity in gap and the seepage velocity under the revet are faster because of inner and outer water level difference of the revet. Thus, the rubbles for final closure lose and the original ground is scoured by piping. There are several difficulties from the view of construction efficiency and safety. This study finds hydraulic phenomena in final closing construction area, develops a program for final closing simulation, minimizes the error during design and construction, and supports the engineering capacity for efficient and safe construction. The existing design method for final closure only considers the flow in gap, but the developed program considers the seepage in revet and flow in closure gap. This developed program chooses the suitable rock size for final closing design and establishes the proper method for final closing construction.

  • Sea water volume intruded from the lock gated was compted by a one-dimensional numerical model and the extent of diffusion of sea water was evaluated for that. The volume of intruded sea water, in the exchange processes of salt and fresh waters, was computed by the conceptual model considering the tidal level, volume of chamber, volume of canal, and operation period only, It was divided into some cases according to whether ships enter or leave the canal and whether the level of tide is lower or higher than that of water level in canal. The model, developed in this work, assumed that intruded sea water is well mixed in the canal; and complete is the exchange of waters between sea and canal. The simulation case was divided into two categories according to whether the water was added from the Han River or not.
