A 16S rDNA clone library was generated to investigate the bacterial diversity in tidal flat sediment in Ganghwa Island, Republic of Korea. A total of 103 clones were sequenced and analyzed by comprehensive phylogenetic analyses. No clones were identical to any of known 16S rRNA sequences in public databases. Sequenced clones fell into thirteen lineages of the domain Bacteria: the alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, CFB group, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobia, and known uncultured candidate divisions (OP11, BRC1, KSB1, and WS1). Two clones were not associated with any known bacterial divisions. The majority of clones belonged to the gamma and delta Proteobacteria (46.7%). Clones of Actinobacteria were distantly related to known taxa. It is evident from 16S rDNA-based community analysis that the bacterial community in tidal flat sediment is remarkably diverse and unique among other marine environments examined so far.
Spatial distribution and biomass of commercial shellfish were investigated in the Saemangeum tidal flat on the west coast of Korea during August 1999. Thirteen species of shellifsh were collected. Major dominant species of the study area were Umbonium thomasi with a density of $6.7\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;(38.2\%)$, Mactra veneriformis with $6.6\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;(37.4\%)$ and Reticunassa festiva with $1.3\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;(7.2\%)$. Commercially important species such as M. veneriformis ($90.7\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;69.3\%$), M. lusoria ($15.6\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;11.9\%)$), C. sinensis ($8.7\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-2}\;6.7\%)$) were dominant in total weight. Most of the shellfish were distributed between the mid-littoral and sub-littoral zones, but C. sinensis and L. flexuosa were distributed mainly in the polluted areas of the supra-littoral zone. The spatial distribution pattern of each shellifsh species generally resembles the Mangyeong and Dongjin estuary. Biomass of commercially important species, M. veneriformis, M. lusoria, C. sinensis and Ruditapes philippinarum in the tidal flat (ca. 850 ha) was estimated to be 774, 135, 67 and 10 tons, respectively.
This paper presents a design approach of driving system for tidal flat vehicle. Firstly, topographic and geological survey of tidal flat zone was accomplished. 'Anac' located in the west-south coast of South Korea was chosen for the survey area. From the survey, the basic design data such as distribution of gullies size and bearing pressure was obtained. To figure out the shape of driving system, numerical simulations were carried out. Through the numerical dynamic simulations using $Recurdyn^{TM}$, the performance of various concepts of driving system was analyzed. From the results, we propose the conceptual design with the functions: a) low contact pressure, b) powerful driving force transmission, c) adaptation to the ground undulation. To satisfy these functional requirements, the driving system adopts rubber tracks, sprockets, tires and suspensions. The static structural analysis of the frame structure was executed as well, from which the detailed design was drawn out. To validate the performance of the designed driving system, the test vehicle which has gasoline engine of 27HP and mechanical transmission was constructed. The driving tests of the vehicle were performed twice at the "Anac" area, and unveiled its capability.
A field survey and Landsat ETM+ image acquisition carried out simultaneously. Using these data, we attempted to establish relationships between tidal flat environmental factors and reflectance observed by ETM+, and to set up a new critical grain size useful for optical remote sensing. Although the grain size of 4 $\Phi$ has been conventionally used as a critical size by sedimentologists, the correlation with optical reflectance was very low. Instead, the grain size of 2 $\Phi$ showed a relatively high correlation coefficient, 0.699, with ETM+ band 4, except near tidal channels in upper tidal flat. We concluded that the grain size of 2 $\Phi$ would be better to use for a critical grain size in Gomso Bay. The grain size also correlated well with moisture content having a correlation coefficient of -0.811 when the 2 $\Phi$ criterion was used. The results of factor analysis showed moisture content was more important parameter than topographic relief, and they were different from German tidal flats in which topographic relief was the prior factor This can be explained by finer grain composition of the Gomso bay tidal flat. In short, moisture content and topography as well as grain size should be considered in tidal flat remote sensing.

Recently, Gomso Bay saw a decrease in the production of manila clam, which accounted for 17.8 % of production across the whole country in 2015, while Geunso Bay saw an increase that raised its contribution to 49.1 %. The tidal flats in these bays are inhabited by various benthos, and material flows in and out according to the tide. It is essential to understand the mass balance of these regions while giving consideration to the characteristics of these tidal flats. In this study, we compared areas where aquaculture farms were located in Gomso Bay with those without from May to August 2015. We divided the region into three sea areas (Sector I, Sector II, and Control), and the mass balance was estimated using the LOICZ model. As a result, the DIP of Sector II in Gomso Bay and another region in Geunso Bay, where a manila clam farm was located, were found to be -207.2 kg/day and 77.2 kg/day. The DIN was -4,996.7 kg/day and 926.6 kg/day. These results suggest that Gomso Bay han a higher density than Geunso Bay, which is thought to be mainly due to the feeding action of organisms. Therefore, in order to maintain a healthy tidal flat ecosystem and to sustain the production of manila clams, sustainable management to reduce the high density of tidal flat farms is necessary.
The comparative feeding ecology of greenling Hexagrammos otakii and Schlegel's black rockfish Sebastes schlereli populations was investigated in the Jangbong tidal flat near Incheon, Korea. Monthly samples were taken using a modified otter trawl from November 1999 to January 2001. The stomach contents of 124 greenling and 115 Schlegel's black rockfish were analyzed. The diet of H. otakii was dominated by the amphipods Gammaropsis iaponicus, Caprella scaura, Isaeopsis sp. and Monocorophium acherusicum, the shrimps Latreutes mucronatus and Alpheus japonicus, the mysid Neomysis orientalis and the bivalve Mytilus edulis. In contrast, S. schlegeli mainly fed on the mysids N. orientalis, N japonica, and N. awatschensis, the shrimps Exopalaemon carinicauda, A. japonicus and L. mucronatus, and the fish Pholis fangi and unidentified gobiids. A comparison of the frequency and abundance of food items showed that crustaceans (e.g. amphipods, mysids and shrimps) were important foods for both species. Their main dietary components, however differed which is probably due to differences in the spatial distribution of the two species and their prey items. In conclusion, greenling and Schlegel's black rockfish, despite being sympatric on a tidal flat have distinct food habits and low dietary overlap (Schooner's index: 0.1). These results indicate, to some extent, resource partitioning for the maximum utilization of available foods in the tidal flat.

The purpose of this study is to quantify the penetration behavior of spilled weathered oil and dispersed oil and to evaluate the influence of the penetrated oils on seawater infiltration in tidal flat environment. The penetration depths of the spilled oils into the tidal flat sediments were gradually deeper according to increase the stranded oil volume. The penetration depth of stranded oil were abruptly dropped at first falling tide, but were not significantly fluctuated after that. Moreover, hydrocarbon concentration was most high within the upper 2 cm. Seawater infiltration was decreased in proportion to the stranded oil volume. Dispersed oil was easily permitted the seawater infiltration than weathered oil and crude oil. Therefore, quick cleaning actions fur penetrated oil will be required far recovery of seawater infiltration, because the seawater contains oxygen and nutrients required for the survival of benthic organisms in tidal flat.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the origin of organic matters on sediment and the characteristics of seasonal variation at an estuarine tidal flat. Silt-clay content (<63 ${\mu}m$), chlorophyll a, TOC, C/N ratio and the stable isotope ratio of carbon and nitrogen were measured at tidal flat around the estuary of the Nanakita River. As a result, organic matters originating from marine organic matter and bethic microalgae greatly contributed to sedimentation of organic matters at Stn.A, sandy tidal flat, though terrigenous organic matters did at Stn.C, muddy tidal flat. Furthermore, it was revealed that the volume and origin of organic matters in the sediments depended on seasonal variation, and the factors were different from the Stns, i.e. bentic microalgae and event for Stn.A, and the eventual sedimentation of organic matters originating from terrestrial plants, respectively.
The purpose of this study is to present the raw data for management and conservation of tidal flat by objective surveying and analysing the halophytes and vegetation distributed in Seocheon tidal flat wetland conservation area, Korea. The results are as follows. The numbers of halophytes in this site were summarized as 27 taxa including 13 families, 21 genera, 26 species and 1 variety. In the results of ecologically important species, rare plant was 1 taxa, 10 taxa of the specific plants by floristic region, 1 taxa of naturalized plant and 1 taxa of the plant with approval for delivering oversea. The life form spectrum consisted of therophytes(44.4%), hemicryptophytes(25.9%), geophytes(14.8%), nanophanerophytes(7.5%), chamaephytes and hydatophytes(each 3.7%). The types of vegetation of Seocheon tidal flat wetland conservation area were classified with 17 communities including Vitex rotundifolia community, Suaeda maritima community, Calystegia soldanella community and so forth. In the halophytes composition, section C and E-1 had the largest character species and companion species. In the results of vegetation amount, section C, D, E-1 and E-2 were the highest score, on the other hand, section A and B were the lowest. The final rating was calculated by adding up values of two factors, and section C and E-1 had the highest rating of II. In future, we will survey the whole flora in Seocheon tidal flat, we will offer the help to establishing the conservation plan of coastal plant ecosystem in West Sea.
Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of intertidal flat can be widely used not only for scientific fields, coastal management, fisheries, ocean safety, military, but also for understanding natural and artificial topographic changes of the tidal flat. In this study, we generated DEM of the Ganghwado southern intertidal flat, the largest tidal flat in the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, using waterline method and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). Constructed DEM which applied waterline method to the Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ images closely expresses overall topographic relief of tidal flat. We found that the accuracy was determined by the number of waterlines which reflect various tidal conditions. The application of InSAR to the ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT images showed that only ERS-1/2 tandem pairs successfully generated DEM in the part of northern Yeongjongdo, but construction of DEM in the other areas was difficult due to the low coherence caused by a lot of surface remnant waters. In the near future, Kompsat-2 will provide satellite images having multi-spectral and high spatial resolution within a relatively short period at different sea levels. Application of waterline method to these images will help us construct a high precision tidal flat DEM. Also, we should develop DEM generation method using single-pass microwave satellite images.
