Tidal power plants such as Shihwa, Garorim and so on are under construction or planned to construct in Korea. However it can be estimated that the inappropriate community assistant program for tidal power plant is applied because tidal energy is imposed on a new and renewable energy criterion in Korea. Therefore in this paper, the optimum funding and region boundaries of community assistant program for tidal power plants are derived in order to improve beneficial effects of the community assistant program for tidal power plants in Korea.
The Shiwhaho is an artificial lake located in Yellow sea of Korea where the ocean tidal current is significantly strong, and the tidal power plant is currently being under construction to generate electric power from the ocean tidal current. In addition to the tidal power plant under construction, an ocean current power park was proposed to maximize the power generation by utilizing the ocean current generated by the tidal power plant. To evaluate the feasibility of such combined power plant, the flow characteristics in the ocean current power parks connected with the tidal power plants were investigated numerically in the present study. When two different type of generations are operating together as a system, their interference may occur, which affects their efficiency. Therefore, the minimum distances between the tidal power plants and the ocean current power generators are studied in the present study to minimize such interference. The feasible region to generate power around the Shiwha tide embankment is also predicted by considering predicted ocean current speed distribution. Various arrangements of the ocean current generators are examined and an optimal arrangement is also discussed.

In order to be able to predict the maximum Annual Energy Production (AEP) for tidal power plants, an AEP optimization tool based on Evolutionary Algorithms was developed by ANDRITZ HYDRO. This tool can simulate all operating modes of the units (bi-directional turbine, pump and sluicing mode) and provide the optimal plant operation that maximizes the AEP to the control system. For the Swansea Bay Tidal Power Plant, the AEP optimization evaluated all different hydraulic and operating concepts and defined the optimal concept that led to a significant AEP increase. A comparison between the optimal plant operation provided by the AEP optimization and the full load operating strategy is presented in the paper, highlighting the advantage of the method in providing the maximum AEP.

Several tidal current power plants are being planned and constructed in Korea utilizing the strong tidal currents along the west and south coasts. A tidal current reaches 9.7 m on the west coast; there are few potential regions for tidal current power generation. The construction of a dam to store water can prevent the circulation of water, causing a great environmental impact on the coast and estuary. The tidal barrage could produce a large amount of power, but it should be carefully considered. The purpose of developing renewable energies is to minimize the environmental impact and to maximize the utilization of clean energy. To produce a great quantity of power, tidal current farms require the placement of numerous units in the ocean. The power generation is very dependent on the size of the rotor and the incoming flow velocity. Also, the interactions between devices contribute greatly to the production of power. The efficiency of a power farm is estimated to determine the production rate. This paper introduces 3 D interaction problems between rotating rotors, considering the axial, transverse, and diagonal distances between horizontal axis tidal current devices.

Nowadays renewable energy has undergone major development, however most renewable energy resources still have demerit which is under the influence of environmental factors that can not be set up the power plants or can not be generated the rated power. To wander from the point of environmental instability, the present paper looks at the tidal current energy which can supply regular electric power. It has an important merit which is more predictable than others, however the place which can be set up is limited and the turbine system must be optimized. The development of the optimized rotor blades design is urgent to obtain regular electric power using the tidal current energy. Therefore, the paper expands on this idea and presents a conceptual design of 100kW horizontal axis rotor blade for the tidal current turbine using blade element momentum (BEM) analysis. The compatibility of horizontal axis tidal turbine (HATT) is verified using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, ANSYS-CFX. This paper presents results of the numerical analysis, such as pressure, streak line and the performance curves with torque data for the inflow of the horizontal axis tidal current turbine (HATT).

In this research, we analyse the economic feasibility of a tidal power plant project which can efficiently generate mass, permanent, predictable, and homogeneous electric power. For the economic feasibility analysis, we used the RETScreen that is developed at the CANMET Energy Technology Center in Natural Resources Canada and widely utilized for analysing the economic feasibility and sensitivity of clean energy projects. Results from the feasibility and sensitivity analysis showd that the tidal power plant project in Korea has a enough economic feasibility, and its feasibility increases more as certified emission reductions price and electricity unit price increase. Based on the results from the feasibility study, we can solve the energy problems to be come in near future by constructing the tidal power plants in Korea more aggressively.

This study aimed to determine candidate areas for tidal current-pumped storage hybrid power plants using GIS-based site selection analysis. The study area is the southwestern sea surrounding Jindo Island in South Korea. Factors to be considered for the site selection analysis were derived considering the design and installation characteristics of the hybrid power plant. Numerical simulation to predict tidal speed was performed using the MOHID(Modelo HIDrodin?mico) and the results were converted into spatial data. Subsequently, a GIS-based overlay analysis method proposed in this study was applied to derive the installation candidate area. A total of 10 regions were identified as candidate sites. Among them, it was determined that the power generator could be installed in relatively wide sea areas in Jindo, Seongnamdo, and Hajodo.

The Al-Zour coastal area, located in southern Kuwait, is a region of concentrated industrial water use, seawater intake, and the outfall of existing power plants. The Al-Zour LNG import facility project is ongoing and there are two issues regarding the seawater temperature in this area that must be considered: variations in water temperature under local meteorology and an increase in water temperature due to the expansion of the thermal discharge of expanded power plant. MIKE 3 model was applied to simulate the water temperature from June to July, based on re-analysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the thermal discharge input from adjacent power plants. The annual water temperatures of two candidate locations of the seawater intake for the Al-Zour LNG re-gasification facility were measured in 2017 and compared to the numerical results. It was determined that the daily seawater temperature is mainly affected by thermal plume dispersion oscillating with the phase of the tidal currents. The regional meteorological conditions such as air temperature and tidal currents, also contributed a great deal to the prediction of seawater temperature.
Cooling seawater of thermal power plant which amounts about 5 cms per 100 MWe has hydro energy of about 3,000 kW at the thermal power plant complex, but this useful hydro energy has not been developed. Therefore, the feasibility study on hydro energy development of three power plants located in the southern and western coast of Korea was performed. Three target power plants are Samcheonpo, Boryeong and Hadong thermal power plant. The design head to discharge cooling water by gravity and the head caused by tidal level in the southwestern coastal area, could be used for the production of electric power. The various alternatives were studied and technical feasibility and economical efficiency were clearly proved.
The performance evaluation of the Samcheonpo small-hydropower plant constructed on the October 25th,2006, was carried out focused on the turbine and generator efficiency analysis by using the measurement data. The unreasonable and unrealistic efficiency results are occurred in some periods because of the data variability, uncertainty, and measurement errors and mistakes. Whereas, the big mismatch is the tidal elevation predicted in the design processes. The difference between the measured and estimated tidal elevation is obvious during the low water period. It should be considered and checked in depth on the efficiency analysis of the planned and constructing small-hydro power plants in other coastal areas.
