Realtime tide and storm-surge computations for the Yellow Sea were conducted using the Parallel Finite Element Model. For these computations a high resolution grid system was constructed with a minimum node interval of loom in Gyeonggi Bay. In the modeling, eight main tidal constituents were analyzed and their results agreed well with the observed data. The realtime tide computation with the eight main tidal constituents and the storm-surge simulation for Typhoon Sarah(1959) were also conducted using parallel computing system of MPI-based LINUX clusters. The result showed a good performance in simulating Typhoon Sarah and reducing the computation time.

The Tartar Strait currents of different scales are analysed using results of observations and modeling. The paper focuses on tidal phenomena and general circulation features. It is shown that the areas of maximal tidal currents are located in the regions of stable boundary streams. The stability of the streams under different meteorological conditions and energy concentration in the small areas may be explained by non-linear effects of tide over rough bottom topography.

A real-time flood forecasting system(FLOFS) was developed for the real-time and predictive determination of flood discharges and stages, and to aid in flood management decisions in the Keum River Estuary Dam. The system consists of three subsystems : data subsystem, model subsystem, and user subsystem. The data subsystem controls and manages data transmitted from telemetering systems and simulated by models. The model subsystem combines various techniques for rainfall-runoff modeling, tidal-level forecasting modeling, one-dimensional unsteady flood routing, Kalman filtering, and autoregressivemovingaverage(ARMA) modeling. The user subsystem in a menu-driven and man-machine interface system.
Field measurements and numerical simulations using EFDC model were performed to quantify the changes of water circulation near Gusipo coast located in the Yellow Sea of Korea to estimate the impact of the construction of the coastal structures (jetty, groin, Gusipo port and bridge). The model predicted tide and tidal currents agreed reasonably well with the measurements. The maximum currents during spring tide near the Gusipo Beach (GB) have the range of 20~40 cm/sec whereas those off the GB range from 60 to 80 cm/sec. The typical patterns of tidal current show parallel with the local isobath. Tidal currents flow northeastward during the flood tide whereas the currents during the ebb tide flow southwestward. The current speeds at shielded waters after the construction of coastal structures strongly decreased as compared with those before the construction. The tidal volume due to the construction of coastal structures was estimated using the depth averaged velocity for 24 hours of spring tide. Tidal volume after construction of coastal structures was compared with initial state (before construction). Tidal volume at present state (after construction of jetty, groin, Gusipo port and bridge) decreased by 28.4% as compared with that of the initial state. The volume after construction of jetty and groin decreased by 21.3%, and the volume after construction of Gusipo port and bridge decreased by 9.8%.

The characteristics of suspended sediment transport are analyzed at the estuaries which show significant shallow water tides, following the previous research for bottom sediment transport at the same estuaries. Several theories which are related with the formation and transition of turbidity maximum are reconfirmed by the numerical experiments. The experiments suggest the necessity of modeling the shallow water tide as a boundary condition, as was also suggested for the bed sediment transport at the previous research. Both the differences of transport characteristics between bed and suspended sediment and the differences between flood/ebb dominances and high/low water dominances are also examined at the Keum River and Youngsan River estuaries. In addition, the transport of bed and suspended sediments are found to have the opposite directions at the Youngsan River estuary which has extensive tidal flat, and thus shows pronounced ebb dominance, which is considered to be a main reason of keeping present bathymetry.

A simple box model was applied to the sedimentation of fine-grained sediments in a rectangular basin. Using the model explanation of the net depositional process of One-grained sediments in a small tide-dominated rocky embayment was possible by a careful evaluation of coefficients for erosion and deposition. For a basin with an inlet through which the exchange of suspended sediments occurs between open sea. the model shows that the time-averaged concentration of suspended sediments for a tidal cycle reaches a steady state initial abrupt change in concentration. During a tidal cycle deposition of sediments seems to occur when the magnitude of tidal currents is substantially low near the slack waters. Resuspension and erosion of bottom sediments take place near the peak of tidal currents. For a depositional basin. Gamagyang Bay, the duration and the maximum rate of deposition appear to be longer and higher than those of erosion. which accounts for the net deposition of fine-grained sediments. The time-averaged concentration of suspended sediment in the basin is slightly lower than that of the open water due to the net deposition. The instantaneous concentration of suspended sediments showed the maximum value about an hour before high water and the minimum about an hour after low water.

This study uses a numerical model to investigate the circulation patterns of the tidal and wind driven current components. The model is vertically averaged 2-D transient using explicit nume-rical scheme, based on equation of motion and continuity. forced by water elevation at open boundaries and wind stress. The model domain extends from 35$^{\circ}$N to 36$^{\circ}$40'N lat., and 125$^{\circ}$E to 126$^{\circ}$40'E long. with x, y grid spacing of 5 km. The model reproduces the tide and tidal currents by 4 major constituents successfully with more than 90% accuracy when compared to two offshore tidal records and currents at one offshore measurements for 22 days. Responses of coastal waters to six schematic wind events are analyzed in terms of current distribution patterns and local features. Regardless of wind directions. strong coastal currents were produced. Bottom topography plays a critical role in producing a local eddy Held whose center is located offshore Pu An with its major radius of 40 km.

A horizontal tow-dimensional version of POM (Princeton Ocean Model) was modified in representing the bottom friction and the open boundary conditions. To simulate the flooding and drying of intertidal flats, a wetting-and-drying scheme was incorporated into the model. The model then was applied to the Chunsu Bay and its adjacent coastal water. Only the water movement due to tides, the dominant forcing in the study area, was considered. This presents the procedure and the results of model calibration and verification for the Chunsu Bay system. The model was calibrated, using the average tidal characteristics in Tide Tables, for the amplitudes and the phases of tidal waves throughout the modeling domain. Calibration results showed that the model gave a good reproduction of tidal waves. The calibrated model was verified using the time-series measurements of surface elevation and current velocity in the summer of 1995. The model reproduced the tides currents very well. calibration and verification results demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing the tidal dynamics in the Chunsu Bay system.

The South China Sea (SCS) is a typical marginal sea characterized with the deep basin, shelf break, shallow shelf, many straits, and complex bathymetry. This study investigated the tidal characteristics and propagation, and reproduced typhoon-induced storm surge in this region using the regional real-time tide-surge model, which was based on the unstructured grid, resolving in detail the region of interest and forced by tide at the open boundary and by wind and air pressure at the surface. Typhoon Haiyan, which occurred in 2013 and caused great damage in the Philippines, was chosen as a case study to simulate typhoon's impact. Amplitudes and phases of four major constituents were reproduced reasonably in general, and the tidal distributions of four constituents were similar to the previous studies. The modelled tide seemed to be within the acceptable levels, considering it was difficult to reproduce the tide in this region based on the previous studies. The free oscillation experiment results described well the feature of tide that the diurnal tide is prevailing in the SCS. The tidal residual current and total energy dissipation were discussed to understand the tidal and sedimentary environments. The storm-surge caused by typhoon Haiyan was reasonably simulated using this modeling system. This study established the regional real-time barotropic tide/water level prediction system for the South China Sea including the seas around the Philippines through the validation of the model and the understanding of tidal characteristics.

The necessary of predicting changes in tidal regime that would caused by large coastal engineering developments has been led to increased numerical modeling of tides on the continental shelf since 1970s (Flather, 1976; Choi, 1978; Greenberg, 1979). (omitted)
