  • As problems such as difficulties in securing stable energy resources and global warming due to the emission of greenhouse gases due to the use of fossil fuels have emerged, interest in the development of renewable energy is increasing. Since the tidal phenomenon has a regularity that occurs regularly with a certain period, it is possible to predict accurately in advance, which has a advantage in terms of energy recovery. Therefore, various methods have been devised to utilize the tide as an energy source. Tidal power using barrages is a representative method that is widely operated, but the promotion of tidal power generation projects is being delayed or stopped due to the decrease in the level of water in the tidal basin, changes in water quality and in the ecosystem. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to develop and verify the performance of a tidal power device applicable to sea areas where dykes are already installed. As a result of carrying out four cases of experiments using two water tanks, pipe lines, open channels, weirs, and water turbine and generator, the possibility of developing a power generation system capable of 10 kW output or more and 60% efficiency or more was confirmed. These research results can be used for small-scale tidal power by utilizing the existing dykes.

  • Recently, coastal structures have been built to protect coastal areas. However, if a tidal wave caused by an earthquake hits the coast, it would cause catastrophic damages. It is important to analyze the basics and the characteristics of a tsunami to reduce damages caused by natural disasters. In this study, a tsunami passing over different topographical changes is simulated with VOF method based on FVM(Finite Volume Method). The reduction of both scale and velocity is accomplished by similarity analysis, and an initial energy is generated by increasing the water level as needed to create a tsunami as if it is caused by a crustal movement. It is found that the present method is appropriate to simulate the tsunami with its mechanism.

  • It is quite difficult to transfer the National Height System 1985 to the island in China. In the study, one feasible and alternative way, which measures synchronally the tide variation at the island and the coast , is firstly introduced. Then, a new method is proposed. This new method combines GPS technique and Quasi-Geoid Determination technique (GQGD). It needs gravity data, GPS data, leveling data and DEM data, together with complex calculation method and the Earth gravity model. After describing the mathematical model and presenting the calculational steps, one experiment has been shown that this method is valid and can achieve accuracy up to 5 cm for the normal height, compared with the results both from the tidal observation and height approximation. Some suggestion is also given in the end.

  • Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. Due to the high tidal range of up to 9.7m on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned and constructed. The rotor, which initially converts the energy, is a very important component because it affects the efficiency of the entire system, and its performance is determined by various design variables. In this paper, a design guideline of current generating HAT rotor and acceptable field rotor in offshore environment is proposed. To design HAT rotor model, wind mill rotor design principles and turbine theories were applied based on a field HAT rotor experimental data. To verify the compatibility of the rotor design method and to analyze the properties of design factors, 3D CFD model was designed and analysed by ANSYS CFX. The analysis results and findings are summarized in the paper.

  • In this paper, a numerical experiment on a tidal turbine was performed based on a water wheel design using the commercial CFD code ANSYS-CFX to contribute to the development of water wheels. The water wheel type tidal turbine was studied with different numbers of rotor blades (including ten, twelve and twenty blades types) and with different blade shapes (Straight, Curved and Zuppinger types) for comparison at several values of tip speed ratio (TSR) ranging from 0.7 to 1.2. The numerical results indicated that the 10-bladed type and the Straight-bladed type turbines absorb the highest power efficiency, up to 43 % at TSR 0.9. In addition, the 20-bladed and the Curved-bladed types showed the lowest performances in all cases of TSRs comparing with the others. Besides that, it was found that this turbine operates much effectively at low range of TSR, especially at TSRs 0.9 and 1 for all cases of blade shapes and all numbers of blades.

  • Toxic effect of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and formaldehyde (FA) on microbial activity and diversity was compared in rice field, leek patch, and tidal mud flat soil samples. MTBE, TBA and FA with different concentrations were added into microcosms containing these soil samples, and placed at room temperature for 30 days. Then the microbial activities such as dehydrogenase and viable cell numbers and microbial community using a DGGE (Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) fingerprinting method were measured. Among the samples, dehydrogenase activity in rice field was inhibited the most by MTBE, TBA and FA. The toxic effect was higher according to the following orders: FA > MTBE > TBA. Dominant species in the microcosms contaminated with MTBE, TBA and FA were Chloroflex, Bacilli, gamma-proteobacteria in the rice field sample, Sphingobacteria, Flavobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacilli, gamma-proteobacteria in the leek patch sample, and Sphingobacteria, Flavobacteria, delta-proteobacteria, gamma-proteobacteria in the tidal mud flat sample.

  • Tidal amplification by construction of the sea-dike and sea-walls had been detected not only near Mokpo Harbor but also at Chungkye Bay which is connected with Mokpo Harbor by a narrow channel. This brings about increase of tidal flat area and in particular increase of surge-wave combined runup during storms. The purpose of this study is to examine an efficient operational model that can be used by civil defense agencies for real-time prediction and fast warnings on wind waves and storm surges. Instead of using commercialized wave models such as WAM, SWAN, the wind waves are simulated by using a new concept of wavelength modulation to enhance broader application of the hyperbolic wave model of the mild-slope equation type. Furthermore, The predicting system is composed of easy and economical tools for inputting depth data of complex bathymetry and enormous tidal flats such as Mokpo coastal zone. The method is applied to Chungkye Bay, and possible inundation features at Mokpo Harbor are analyzed.

  • Before investigating the long-term variations in macrobenthic communities sampled in the Chokchon macrotidal flat in Inchon, Korea, from 1989 to 1996, we need to understand how environmental factors in the area vary. As potential governing agents of tidal flat communities, abiotic factors such as mean sea level, seawater, air temperature, and precipitation were considered. Data for these factors were collected at equal intervals from 1976 or 1980 to 1996, and were analyzed using a decomposition method. In this analysis, all the above variables showed strong seasonal nature, and yielded a significant trend and cyclical variation. Positive trends were seen in the seawater and air temperatures, and based upon this relationship, it was found that the biological sampling period of our program has been carried out during warmer periods in succession. This paper puts forth some hypotheses concerning the response of tidal flat macrobenthos communities to the changing environment including mild winters in succession.
