Tidal bore is a peculiar nature phenomenon which is caused by the lunar and solar gravitation. Based on the physical characters of tidal bores, in this paper we propose a novel method to model and render this phenomenon, especially the tidal waves in Qiantang estuary. According to Boltzmann equation for tidal waves, we solve it with the novel triangle mesh of Kinectic Flux Vector Splitting (KFVS) mode. Then a method combining a curve forecasting wave and particles model is proposed to render the dynamic scenes of overturning tidal waves. Finally, with some rendering technologies, various realistic tidal waves under diversified conditions is rendered in real time.
Tidal power generation is to produce electrical energy from fluctuations of the ebb and flow in a constructed embankment. More specifically, the sinusoidal variations of tidal flow, along with the periodicity and changes in the height of waves over time make the tidal power generation possible at a certain tidal level. This paper proposes a more practical efficiency test method for tidal power plant generator that utilizes the axis torque changing values rather than the retardation method which is commonly used. The proposed method was compared with the conventional method and the test result shows that proposed method provides a similar accuracy with the conventional retardation method and a better efficiency.
The objective of this study is to detect a inter-tidal topographic change in a decade. Waterline extraction is a one of widely used method to generate digital elevation model (DEM) of tidal flat using multi-temporal optical data. This method has been well known that it is possible to construct detailed topographic relief of tidal flat using waterlines In this study, we generated two sets of tidal flat DEM for the southern Ganghwado. The DEMs showed that the Yeongjongdo northern tidal flat is relatively high elevation with steep gradients. The Ganghwado southern tidal flat is relatively low elevation and gentle gradients. To detect the morphologic change of tidal flat during a decade, we compared between early 1990's DEM and early 2000's DEM. Erosion during a decade is dominant at the west of southern Ganghwado tidal flat, while sedimentation is dominant at the wide channel between the southern Ganghwado and Yeongjongdo tidal flats. This area has been commonly affected by high current and sedimentation energy. Although we are not able to verify the accuracy of the changes in topography and absolute volume of sediments, this result shows that DEM using waterline extraction method is an effective tool for long term topographic change estimation.

Tidal Flats are very important natural resource and various efforts have been made to protect it from environmental pollutions. The projects to monitor the environmental changes by periodically observing the creatures in tidal flats are underway. However, they are being done inefficiently by people directly observing. In this paper, we propose an object segmentation method that can be applied to the applications which automatically monitor the living creatures in tidal flats. In the proposed method, a foreground map representing the location of objects is obtained by using a temporal difference method, and then a superpixel method is applied to detect the detailed boundary of an object. The region of a crab is extracted finally by combining the foreground map and the superpixel information. Experimental results show that the proposed method separates crab regions from a tidal flat image easily and accurately.

This study evaluated tidal stream energy resources according to tidal flow properties around Uido off the west coast of, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. A feasibility study was first carried out through the collection of bathymetry data and tidal phase information. For this simulation, a depth-averaged 2D ADCIRC (Advanced Circulation) model for real sea situations was applied to a Finite Element Method (FEM) approach for tides given the variation of tidal current speed. Hydrodynamics were simulated with 4 major tidal constituents (M2, S2, K1, and O1) after setting up 4 observation points. From the real depth-averaged model simulation results, it was found that the spring tide Higher High Water (HHW) and tidal current speed values at the 4 observation points were about 2.2 m and 1.33 m/s, respectively. The ADCIRC model results were analyzed with reference to the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency's (KHOA) observed data for verification. Furthermore, using topographical characteristics via the Tidal Flux Method (TFM), tidal energy density distribution was calculated, indicating a maximum tidal energy density of about $1.75kW/m^2$ for the 5 assessment areas around Uido. The tidal energy density was evaluated with consideration given to topographical characteristics as well as tidal elevation and tidal current speed to determine an optimum tidal farm candidate.
Waterline extraction is the one of widely used methods for studying changes in tidal flat environment and coastlines using multi-temporal optical images such as Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+. High dynamics of tidal currents and land reclamation which accelerate sedimentation and/or erosion cause waterline change in tidal flats. The amount of sediment deposited or eroded can be evaluated by precisely estimating waterline changes in tidal flats. The objective of this study is to detect the change of waterlines during 17 years and analyze the trends of erosion and sedimentation in the study areas. The Ganghwado tidal flat on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula was selected. The study area is famous for high dynamics of tidal currents and vast tidal flats. Land reclamation which has been carried out on a large scale is also considered as one of elements that have accelerated the environmental changes in this tidal flat. In this study, we acquired 26 waterlines from Landsat TM and Landsat ETM+ images. We extracted the waterline from each satellite image to generate a digital elevation map (DEM) which was used for reference and to compare with the other waterline which was extracted from DEM having a same tide. The result of comparison well depicted the areas of dominant sedimentation and erosion, and general trends of sedimentation and erosion according to sub-regions are also revealed during the investigation time. Results showed that erosion during a decade was dominant at the west of the Southern Ganghwado tidal flat, while sedimentation was dominant at the wide channel between the Southern Ganghwado tidal flat and the Yeongjongdo tidal flat. This area has been commonly affected by high currents and sedimentation energy. Although we were not able to verify the accuracy of the waterline changes, this result clearly showed the waterline change and therefore, the waterline extraction method used in this study has proven as an effective tool for long term tidal change estimation.
It is difficult to classify tidal flat surface that is composed of a mixture of mud, sand, water and microphytobenthos. We used a Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU) method for effectively classifying the tidal flat surface characteristics within a pixel. This study aims at 1) detecting algal mat using LSU in the Saemangeum tidal flats, 2) determining a suitable end-member selection method in tidal flats, and 3) find out a habitual characteristics of algal mat. Two types of end-member were built; one is a reference end-member derived from field spectrometer measurements and the other image end-member. A field spectrometer was used to measure spectral reflectance, and a spectral library was accomplished by shape difference of spectra, r.m.s. difference of spectra, continuum removal and Mann-Whitney U-test. Reference end-members were extracted from the spectral library. Image end-members were obtained by applying Principle Component Analysis (PCA) to an image. The LSU method was effective to detect microphytobenthos, and successfully classified the intertidal zone into algal mat, sediment, and water body components. The reference end-member was slightly more effective than the image end-member for the classification. Fine grained upper tidal flat is generally considered as a rich habitat for algal mat. We also identified unusual microphytobenthos that inhabited coarse grained lower tidal flats.

Tidal power is one of new and renewable energy sources. Tidal power is generated by using the gap in the water level between the water outside and inside the embankment. All tidal power plant in Korea were being operated by import of turn-key from abroad. The know-how and technology which are the most important to build predictive control system has become increasingly difficult to obtain from advanced countries because most of them avoid to transfer, which the domestic development of the control system is needed. In this paper, a study on start stop system at water turbine-generator for tidal power plant at the beginning of development was presented. For improvement the efficiency and develope of core technology of the start stop system, the technique and characteristics of tidal power, modeling, maximum generation calculation method, and optimal control of joint control system in Sihwa tidal power plant were studied.
Tidal channel development is influenced by sediment type, grain size, composition and tidal current. Tidal channels are usually characterized by channel development, density and shape. Quantitative analysis of tidal channels using remotely sensed data have rarely been studied. The objective of this study is to quantify tidal channels in terms of fractal dimension and compare different inter-tidal channel patterns. For the fractal analysis, we used Box counting method which had been successfully applied to streams, coastlines and others linear features. For a study, the southern part of Ganghwado tidal flats was selected where is famous for high dynamics of tidal currents and vast tidal flats. This area has different widths and lengths of tidal channels. IKONOS and Komsat-2 MSC images were used for extracting tidal channels, and the Box counting method was applied to obtain fractal dimensions (D) for each tidal channel. Yeochari area possesses channels with linear pattern and less dense development and accordingly show low D values ranging from 1.037 to 1.038. On other hands, area (near Donggumdo and Yeongjongdo ) of dendrites channel pattern and dense development resulted in high D values from 1.2057 to 1.2667. Also, area possesses channels with linear pattern had low density about $18{\sim}24%$. Area of dendritic channel pattern had high density about $34{\sim}69%$. The difference of fractal dimensions about 0.2 according to channel development in tidal flats is relatively large enough to use as an index for tidal channel classification. Also, area where channels showed linear pattern had low density about $18{\sim}24%$. Area of dendritic channel pattern had high density about $34{\sim}69%$. Using fractal dimension and density, it would be possible to quantify the tidal channel development in association with surface characteristics.

In order to predict coastal environmental changes caused by coastal development and effectively manage marine environment, the exact information about water level changes and hydrodynamic circulation is essential. However, most of the environmental impact assessment has been using only limited tidal constituents in the numerical tide model to predict the real tide and tidal currents caused by the synthesis of many other tidal constituents, which causes an error in the environmental impact assessment. In this study, a method, which uses the limited tidal constituents at the offshore open boundaries and the observed tide at the inner or nearby point to predict the real tide in the model domain accurately, is suggested. Tidal and tidal currents predicted by the suggested method agreed well with the observations.
