  • Representative tidal gauging (TG) stations are selected to cover the tidal characteristics of the Korean peninsula coastal seas, and the statistical parameters of the data are analysed from the perspective of the probability distribution at that TG station. The shape of the distribution in the Incheon and Gunsan TG stations, which are tide-dominated areas, shows two clear modes at HWONT and LWONT in the distributions, and in the Mokpo station, shows an asymmetric double peak distribution. In contrast, the frequency distribution shape shows a smoothed flat peak in the Jeju, Yeosu and Busan TG stations, and a single peak in the Pohang and Sokcho TG stations. The emersion and submersion equations suggested as the 6-parameter Gaussian mixture models in this study are accurate, and well fitted to the observed tidal elevation data. The ${\mu}_1$, ${\mu}_2$ parameters are highly correlated to the LWONT and HWONT, and the ${\sigma}_1$ and ${\sigma}_2$ parameters are also closely correlated to the mean tidal range. The ${\mu}_1$ and ${\mu}_2$ parameters coincide with the modes of the suggested probability distribution of the hourly tidal level data.

  • Spatio-temporal distribution patterns of the major dominant species were assessed from bimonthly monitoring of macrotidal flat in Cheokjeon, Incheon, Korea between September 1990 and July 1992. Overall, macrofauna comprised a total of 111 species, 25,491 inds.136 ㎡. The result of Le Bris index, dominance ranking of the lead-ing species showed that the top 15 species accounting for 74.8% (19,072 inds.) of total density. In Cheokjeon tidal flat, some species were especially habitat-restricted such as genus Nephtys (Annelids; Polychaetes) and Mac-rophthalmus (Crustaceans; Decapods). Based on the density data, the five dominant species were the polychaetes Het-eromastus filiformis, the bivalves Mactra veneriformis and Solen strictus, the brachyurans Macrophthalmus japonicus, the holothuriodeans Protankyra bidentata. The results of one-way ANOVA, mean value of H. filiformis and M. ven-eriformis did not show significant changes with tidal elevation and sediment composition (p>0.05). But, other species (S. strictus, M. japonicus and P. bidentata) showed significant variations (p<0.001). In conclusion, these indicate significant spatial fluctuation with tidal elevation and sediment characteristics in some species.

  • Seawater circulations between a bay and the open sea play an important role to make the ecosystem healthy, providing nutrient and oxygen to the benthic environments and cleaning up pollutions. The health of the benthic environment in a bay is closely related to the flushing characteristics of seawater. In this study, to estimate the seawater distribution and circulation characteristics of benthic environment in the Geunso bay, we calculated the hydraulic turn-over time by a hydro-hypsographic analysis. Digital elevation model (DEM) which was generated using waterline method based upon remotely sensed data and water depth of the subtidal zone estimated by echo-sounding survey was applied to the hydro-hypsograhic analysis through a geographic information system (GIS) spatial analysis. The results showed that 95% of the total area of the bay was tidal flat and the hydraulic turn-over time was 1.03 tidal cycle, which indicated that the flushing characteristics of the Geunso bay was very good. Geunso bay was revealed to occupy relatively wide area of benthic environment and to have relatively big tidal range over other domestic and foreign coastal environment, therefore it could have a better seawater circulation characteristics. This result can be effectively applied as fundamental information to establish the system for a quantitative estimate of health of coastal environment in the west coast of Korea and manage the ecosystem in benthic environments.

  • The purpose of this study is to produce digital elevation model (DEM) in the Jebu tidal flat, one of the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, by means of photogrammetric techniques from aerial digital stereo-images. Produced DEM would be become the fundamental data for change detection of the sediment and erosion. To do so, epipolar line is established by relative orientation. Area-based matching is then carried out based on this line and matching size according to surface property of tidal flat after a classified image is produced from reflectance and texture of the surface. As the results, DEM generated by the proposed method showed subtle changes in height more precisely than DEM using the fixed matching size and DEM by the commercial S/W in the region, such as tidal flats having few level differences.

  • The satellite image acquired by RADARSAT SAR on August 15, 1996 reveals internal waves in north coastal waters of Cheju Island. It is indicated from the image data, the tidal elevation data, and the bottom topography data, the internal waves seem to be generated by interaction between shallow bottom and tidal currents travelling in the stratified water in the summer time during the tidal changeovers from ebb to flood. The internal waves generated in such condition show patterns of trains of solitons. Probable amplitude of observed solitons is calculated using estimation of the soliton wave length from SAR image data and K-dV equation. Detection of the internal waves is very significant not only to military strategist for underwater maneuvers such as operation of submarines, but also to physical and biological oceanographers. Temporal and spatial variation of the internal waves are needed to be measured by simultaneous in-situ field study together with SAR to examine the nature of these internal waves.

  • High resolution intertidal DEM is a basic material for science research like sedimentation/erosion by ocean current, and is invaluable in a monitoring of environmental changes and practical management of coastal wetland. Since the intertidal zone changes rapidly by the inflow of fluvial debris and tide condition, remote sensing is an effective tool for observing large areas in short time. Although radar interferometry is one of the well-known techniques for generating high resolution DEM, conventional repeat-pass interferometry has difficulty on acquiring enough coherence over tidal flat due to the limited exposure time and the rapid changes in surface condition. In order to overcome these constraints, we tested the feasibility of radar interferometry using Cosmo-SkyMed tandem-like one-day data and ERS-ENVISAT cross tandem data with very short revisit period compared to the conventional repeat pass data. Small temporal baseline combined with long perpendicular baseline allowed high coherence over most of the exposed tidal flat surface in both observations. However the interferometric phases acquired from Cosmo-SkyMed data suffer from atmospheric delay and changes in soil moisture contents. The ERS-ENVISAT pair, on the other hand, provides nice phase which agree well with the real topography, because the atmospheric effect in 30-minute gap is almost same to both images so that they are cancelled out in the interferometric process. Thus, the cross interferometry with very small temporal baseline and large perpendicular baseline is one of the most reliable solutions for the intertidal DEM construction which requires very accurate mapping of the elevation.

  • In this paper, we have constructed high-resolution topographical map of macro-tidal Malipo beach through integration of terrestrial LiDAR measurement and MBES survey data at inter-tidal zone. To acquire the enough information of inter-tidal zone, we have done terrestrial LiDAR measurement mounted on the roof of vehicle with DGPS through go-stop-scan method at the ebb tide and MBES depth surveying with tide gauge and eye staff measurement for tide correction and MSL calculation at the high tide all together. To integrate two kinds of data, we have unified the vertical coordination standard to Incheon MSL. The mean error of overlapped inter-tidal zone is about 2~6 cm. To verify the accuracy of terrestrial LiDAR, RTK-DGPS measurement have done simultaneously and the difference of Z value RMSE is about 4~7 cm. The resolution of Malipo topographical map is 50 cm and it has constructed to DEM (Digital Elevation Model) based on GIS. Now it has used as an input topography information for the storm-surge inundation prediction models. Also it will be possible to use monitoring of beach process through the long-term periodic measurement and GIS-based 3D spatial analysis calculating the erosion and deposition considering with the artificial beach transition and coastal environmental parameters.

  • A horizontal tow-dimensional version of POM (Princeton Ocean Model) was modified in representing the bottom friction and the open boundary conditions. To simulate the flooding and drying of intertidal flats, a wetting-and-drying scheme was incorporated into the model. The model then was applied to the Chunsu Bay and its adjacent coastal water. Only the water movement due to tides, the dominant forcing in the study area, was considered. This presents the procedure and the results of model calibration and verification for the Chunsu Bay system. The model was calibrated, using the average tidal characteristics in Tide Tables, for the amplitudes and the phases of tidal waves throughout the modeling domain. Calibration results showed that the model gave a good reproduction of tidal waves. The calibrated model was verified using the time-series measurements of surface elevation and current velocity in the summer of 1995. The model reproduced the tides currents very well. calibration and verification results demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing the tidal dynamics in the Chunsu Bay system.

  • For the design of wind-power facilities, the highest and lowest astronomical tides (HAT and LAT, respectively) are needed for the tidal-water levels regarding international designs; however, the approximate highest high water and approximate lowest low water AHHW and ALLW, respectively, have been used in Korea. The HAT and LAT in the wind-farm test-bed sea should be estimated to satisfy the international standard. In this study, the HAT and LAT are therefore estimated using the hourly tidal-elevation data of the Eocheongdo, Anmado, Younggwang, Gunsan, Janghang, and Seocheon tidal-gauging stations that are located in the adjacent coastal sea. The nodal variation patterns of the major lunar components, such as $M_2$, $O_1$, and $K_1$ are analyzed to check the expected long-term lunar cycle, i.e., 18.61 year's nodal-variation patterns. The temporal amplitude variations of the $M_2$, $O_1$, and $K_1$ clearly show the 18.61-years periodic patterns in the case of the no-nodal correction condition. In addition, the suggested HAT and LAT elevations, estimated as the upper and lower confidence limits of the yearly HAT and LAT elevations, are 50 cm greater than the AHHW and 40 cm lower than the ALLW, respectively.

  • In this study, comparisons of the backscattering coefficients and the coherence values which had been extracted from SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images such as JERS-1, ENVISAT and ALOS satellites with surface roughness, surface geometric and soil moisture content were carried out. As the results of analysis using the backscattering coefficient and coherence values from SAR images, the coherence was shown high in the region containing more of mud fraction due to higher viscosity of fine grain-size. A lot of tidal channels were well developed in the Ganghwa tidal flat, affecting the drainage of seawater and subsequent soil moisture content by exposure time of tidal flat. The backscattering coefficient. consequently, appeared to be lower in sand flat and mix flat with decrease of soil moisture. In contrast, most mud flats were distributed at high elevation so that soil moisture was not much influenced by seawater. The backscattering coefficient in mud flat seemed to have a relationship with the density of tidal channel. In addition, lowering backscattering coefficients in the all Ganghwa tidal flat was observed when surface remnant water increased according to the amount of rainfall. The correlation between backscattering coefficient, coherence and sediment environment factors in the Ganghwa tidal flat was investigated. In the future, more quantitative spatial analysis will be helpful to well understand the sedimentary influence of various sediment environment factors.
