  • Incheon Bay of Korea is one of the most famous regions for high tidal range. Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs(MLTM) has implemented preliminary investigation for tidal power energy development in this area since 2006. Through field observations, various kinds of marine data consisting of depth and geography, marine weather, tidal currents, wave, seawater characteristics, geology, marine ecosystem and marine environment were gathered. To use these data efficiently for the determining of feasibility of developing and appropriateness of project scale, spatial data management and application system is essential. Therefore, in this study, the concept, methodology and procedure of spatial data modeling are defined for tidal energy development. Spatial data modeling consists of essential model relating to tidal energy directly and optional model including environmental factors. Essential model is composed with fundamental elements like as depth, geography, and several numerical modeling results(tide, tidal current, wave).

  • Quasi-linear bright features persistently appeared on ENVISAT ASAR images as well as X-SAR images along the tidal channels in Gyung-Gi Bay, Korea during the ebb tides. These features are induced by spatial backscatter variations caused by surface convergence (divergence) through the interaction between tidal currents and bathymetry. In order to validate this mechanism, a numerical tidal model simulation is performed on the realistic bathymetry with the tidal boundary conditions. The tide model reproduces the current convergence zone along the tidal channel during the ebb tides, which exactly coincides with the location of bright line features on SAR images.

  • A two-dimensional numerical tidal model is formulated to reproduce tides in the northeastern Yellow-Sea, Seohan Bay. The model was formulated on spherical grid system with mesh resolution of 1' latitude by 4/3' longitude. As a first step, tidal distribution of four major tidal constituents are computed and compared with coastal observation. Independent tidal charts for the M$_2$, S$_2$, $K_1$, and $O_1$ tides were presented. Residual tidal currents and tidal energy flux were also computed.

  • The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides result in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by using tidal current turbines. The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok between Chindo and Haenam. Extensive coastal engineer ing research works have been carried out. This paper describes some observation results of field campaign, design of the supporting structure of a pilot plant of 1,000kW and a future tidal current power plant and so on.

  • Based on field observed tide, tidal currents and depth data, hydrodynamic changes on the Keum River Estuary has been analyzed in which huge complex constructions has been made simultaneously. According to the analyses from acquired data over 2 years, rapid increasing of tidal currents and resulting scouring of 50 cm/yr has been reported in flow-guided dikes region of Kunsan Outer Port. However inner part of the Saemankeum sea dike and Kunjang Industrial Complex dike, 30 cm of sedimentation were found during 2 months of fall season in tidal flats and hence very rapid transition of hydrodynamic system on this area are resulted from those constructions which are still on going nearby.

  • Seawater movement analyses and dye diffusion experiments were conducted to understand the characteristics of eddy diffusion in the southwest coastal zone of Korea. The findings indicate that pollutants entering the study area were most influenced by tidal currents and showed temporal and spatial variations according to the turbulent characteristics of the tidal current. Pollutants entering the study area are likely to travel a distance of approximately 2 km (within 1 h) following the direction of the tidal currents and show a spreading distance (diameter of the diffusion area) of within 10% of the travel distance (within 200 m). The dispersion of the diffusion area is expected to increase in proportion to the elapsed time raised to a power of 1.19 to 1.23. The results are expected to provide a basis for using the eddy diffusion coefficient as a temporally variable value (previously assumed to be a constant based on empirical data), thereby contributing to improving the predictive accuracy of ocean diffusion models.

  • The sedimentation pattern in Namhaepo Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment of western Korea, was investigated by means of analysing high-resolution seismic profiles, sediment samples, and tidal currents. Recent sediments up to 20 m which overlie the irregular surface of the acoustic basement. The sediments consist mainly of sandy silt and silt; the mean grain size of these sediments ranges from 4 to 5.5 phi, showing a shoreward-fining distribution pattern. This distribution pattern agrees are largely reversed during ebb, with a maximum velocity of 39 cm/sec. The calculated shear velocity of the tidal currents at sea bed ranges from 0.5 to 3.3 cm/sec during flood and from 0.7 to 2.5 cm/sec during ebb. The mean values of these velocities exceed the critical shear velocity for the silt particles. The data suggest that the tidal currents play an important role in the transportation and deposition of sediments in the bay and the surface topography of the sea floor is largely deter-mined by tidal sedimentation.

  • During the performance of large scale tidal land reclamation project along the coast line, the construction of large scale structures such as sea-dikes, closing estuaries will induce big changes of near-shore hydraulic behavior. In this paper, its is aimed to verify the change of tide and currents after the construction of sea-dike of the Saemangeum project along the coast line. Numerical scale model "TRISULA" which development by Delft Hydraulics in the Netherlands was used. "TRISULA" is adopting the finite difference numerical scheme, and mostly using for hydro-dynamic solution along the sea and estuaries. Model boundary is covering $100{\times}170$ Km and constructed with $133{\times}337$ grids. Outer side boundary is divided 48 sections, and input 37 tidal components are gained from another big scale numerical "Yellow Sea" model. Model calibrations & verifications were performed th field tide & current datas which were measured along sea-dike alignment during Aug. $1997{\sim}Apr$. 1999. And then, numerical simulation with the tide condition dated 17 Apr. 1999 was performed with & without sea-dike construction condition for the comparison. Evaluated boundary is 20 km out-side from sea-dike alignment. Four cross lanes were set up, each of lane contains 3 points, for the comparison of sea-dike construction effects. Results showing the tidal amplitude is reducing approximately 20 cm after the construction of sea-dike during spring tide condition, amplitude 6.9m. Currents after construction of sea-dikes along the alignment, the northern part shows 50%(inner), 90%(outer) and the southern part shows 10%(inner) 50%(outer) of the currents before construction.

  • In order to forecast the location of drifting objects at sea around Mokpo, Korea, the simulations were conducted with the input data of natural factors such as direction and force of wind and tidal current using SARMAP which is one of useful simulation tools for search and rescue at sea. Comparing the observed data with the calculated data of tidal currents used in SARMAP, the calculated tidal currents of SARMAP were in good agreement with the observed tidal currents. With regard to the case of marine casualties which occurred at sea around Daeheuksan-Do in July, 2006, the difference between the location of drifting body simulated by SAR model of Mokpo District Coast Guard and the location simulated by SARMAP was found to be about 20 nautical miles.

  • In marine salvage, extreme tide heights and tidal currents are necessary to anchor an accidental ship. In order to meet this requirement, a simple scheme was developed which yields the spatial informations on the extreme tide from the distribution of approximate highest astronomical tide heights using a relationship between extreme and highest astronomical tides at the standard port. This method is the inference method based on horizontally homogeneity of tide. This scheme was applied to estimate extreme tide heights and tidal currents in the Namhae (southern sea of Korea). The highest astronomical tide heights are computed by amplitude of four major constituents (M2, S2, K1, O1 tide). The estimated extreme tide heights are ranged from 70 to 260 cm for return period 50 years and from 80 to 270cm for return period 100 years, respectively. For return period 100 years, extreme tidal currents show value of 1.55 times as strong as those of normal state.
