Three types of 100 kW-class tidal stream turbines are proposed and their performance is studied both numerically and experimentally. Following a wind turbine design procedure, a base blade is derived and two additional blades are newly designed focusing more on efficiency and cavitation. For the three designed turbines, a CFD is performed by using FLUENT. The calculations predict that the newly designed turbines perform better than the base turbine and the tip vortex can be reduced with additional efficiency increase by adopting a tip rake. The performance of the turbines is tested in a towing tank with 700 mm models. The scale problem is carefully investigated and the measurements are compared with the CFD results. All the prediction from the CFD is supported by the model experiment with some quantitative discrepancy. The maximum efficiencies are 0.49 (CFD) and 0.45 (experiment) at TSR 5.17 for the turbine with a tip rake.
In this study, numerical analyses that considered the dynamic interaction effects between the flow and a turbine were carried out to investigate the power output performance of an H-type Darrieus turbine rotor, which is one of the representative lifting-type vertical-axis tidal-current turbines. For this purpose, a commercial CFD code, Star-CCM+, was utilized for an example three-bladed turbine with a rotor diameter of 3.5 m, a solidity of 0.13, and the blade shape of an NACA0020 airfoil, and the optimal tip speed ratio (TSR) and corresponding maximum power coefficient were evaluated through exhaustive simulations with different sets of flow speed and external torque conditions. The optimal TSR and maximum power coefficient were found to be approximately 1.84 and 48%, respectively. The torque and angular velocity pulsations were also investigated, and it was found that the pulsation ratios for the torque and angular velocity were gradually increased and decreased with an increase in TSR, respectively.
The rotor design is fundamental to the performance and dynamic response of the Counter-rotating marine tidal current turbine. The wind industry has seen significant advancement single rotor blade technology, offering considerable knowledge and making it easy to transfer to tidal stream energy converters. In this paper, 3D flow and performance an alysis on a 100 kW counter-rotating marine current turbine blade was carried out by using the 3-D Navier-Stokes commercial solver(ANSYS CFX-11.0) to provide more efficient design techniques to design engineers. The front and rear rotor diameter is 8m and the rotating speed is 24.72rpm. Hexahedral meshing was generated by ICEM-CFD to achieve better quality of results. The rated power and its approaching stream velocity for design are 100 kW and 2 m/s respectively. The pressure distribution on the blade's suction side tells us that the pressure becomes low at the leading edge of the airfoil as it moves from the hub to the tip.

The vertical-axis tidal current turbine (VAT) consisting of blades, struts to support blades, shaft, generator and so forth requires anti-resonance design against fluid fluctuation forces generated on blades to ensure its stable operation. In this study, a free vibration analysis program based on the finite element method is developed for efficient anti-resonance design of VAT in the preliminary design stage. In the finite element modeling, the VAT structure components are regarded as beam elements. Added masses due to the fluid and structure interaction of VAT evaluated by empirical formulas are considered as lumped mass elements. In addition, input parameters required for the analysis can be automatically prepared from the principal dimensions of VAT to make anti-resonance design more convenient. The validity of applied methods is verified by the comparison of the numerical results obtained from MSC/Nastran and the developed program for two VAT models.

We have developed electrical power train for 1MW tidal current plant which is composed of both 500kW tidal current plant with doubly-fed induction generator and 500kW tidal current plant with synchronous generator. To check performances of the protype, 2MW dynamometer is used to simulate a helical turbine, and then protype generator and converter are coupled with the dynamometer separately. From the suggested experimental results it is reconfirmed that two kinds of the power train to be installed at the Uldolmok located at southwestern shore in Korea are able to operate under all kinds of the condition about speed and power.

A numerical investigation was performed based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations for the two-dimensional unsteady flow around a vertical axis turbine(VAT) with three or four blades. VAT is one of the promising devices for tidal current energy conversion. The geometry of the turbine blade was $NACA65_3$-018 airfoil, for which CFD analysis using Fluent was carried out at several angles of attack and the results were compared with the corresponding experimental data for validation and calibration. Then CFD simulations were carried out for the whole vertical axis turbine with a two-dimensional setup. The CFD simulation demonstrated the usefulness of the method to study the typical unsteady flows around VATs and the results showed that the optimum turbine efficiency could be achieved for carefully selected combinations of the number of blade and Tip-Speed Ratio(TSR).

In this paper, a numerical experiment on a tidal turbine was performed based on a water wheel design using the commercial CFD code ANSYS-CFX to contribute to the development of water wheels. The water wheel type tidal turbine was studied with different numbers of rotor blades (including ten, twelve and twenty blades types) and with different blade shapes (Straight, Curved and Zuppinger types) for comparison at several values of tip speed ratio (TSR) ranging from 0.7 to 1.2. The numerical results indicated that the 10-bladed type and the Straight-bladed type turbines absorb the highest power efficiency, up to 43 % at TSR 0.9. In addition, the 20-bladed and the Curved-bladed types showed the lowest performances in all cases of TSRs comparing with the others. Besides that, it was found that this turbine operates much effectively at low range of TSR, especially at TSRs 0.9 and 1 for all cases of blade shapes and all numbers of blades.

Tidal current power system is the energy converter which converts the kinetic energy of tidal stream into electric energy. The performance of the rotor which initially converts the energy is determined by various design factors and it should be optimized by the ocean environment of the field. Flow direction changes due to rise and fall of the tides, but horizontal axis turbine is very sensitive to direction of flow. To investigate the rotor performance considering the interaction problems with incidence angle of flow, series of experiments have been conducted. The results and findings are summarized in the paper.

In order to analyze the characteristics of tidal current power generation system, we measured output power in M-G Set (Motor-Generator Set) and MATLAB/Simulink. We installed M-G Set (Motor-Generator Set) and did a simulation using MATLAB/Smulink. The simulation consisted of the tidal current turbine, PMSG, converter, and three-phase PWM inverter. Also, the speed control of the generator was performed using machine side converter. And we measured output voltage, current, power of the generator and the output power of three-phase PWM inverter.
