  • Osteoporosis is a growing global health concern primarily associated with decreased estrogen in postmenopausal women. Recently, some strains of probiotics were examined for potential anti-osteoporotic effects. This study intended to evaluate the impacts of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum MGE 3038 strain (MGE 3038) in ovariectomized rats. For this purpose, twelve weeks old female Wistar rats (n=21; 250-300 g) were divided into 3 groups; ovariectomy (OVX) group, OVX/MGE 3038 group and Sham group (control). In these groups; two went through respective OVX and one had daily MGE 3038 administration through oral gavage. Prior to 16 weeks after OVX, we collected blood samples and extracted the tibiae. We scanned the extracted tibiae by in-vivo micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and evaluated pathology by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson's trichrome staining. The serum levels of C-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), osteocalcin (OC), and the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) were examined. The OVX/MGE 3038 group showed increases in bone mineral density, trabecular bone volume, trabecular number, and trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), and a decrease in trabecular spacing than the OVX group. However, OVX/MGE 3038 group and control group were measurably comparable in Tb.Th. Micro-CT, H&E, and Masson's trichrome findings exhibited increased preservation and maintenance of trabecular bone structure in the OVX/MGE 3038 group in comparison to the OVX group. In serum, the levels of CTX, OC and RANKL were significantly different between the OVX and OVX/MGE 3038 groups. Taken together, L. plantarum MGE 3038 could be helpful for the treatment of osteoporosis.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects on bone repair of different concentrations of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) added to AH Plus. Materials and Methods: Bone tissue reactions were evaluated in 30 rats (Rattus norvegicus) after 7 and 30 days. In the AH + MTA10, AH + MTA20, and AH + MTA30 groups, defects in the tibiae were filled with AH Plus with MTA in proportions of 10%, 20% and 30%, respectively; in the MTA-FILL group, MTA Fillapex was used; and in the control group, no sealer was used. The samples were histologically analyzed to assess bone union and maturation. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were performed for multiple pairwise comparisons (p ≤ 0.05). Results: At the 7-day time point, AH + MTA10 was superior to MTA-FILL with respect to bone union, and AH + MTA20 was superior to MTA-FILL with respect to bone maturity (p < 0.05). At the 30-day time point, both the AH + MTA10 and AH + MTA20 experimental sealers were superior not only to MTA-FILL, but also to AH + MTA30 with respect to both parameters (p < 0.05). The results of the AH + MTA10 and AH + MTA20 groups were superior to those of the control group for both parameters and experimental time points (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results suggest the potential benefit of using a combination of these materials in situations requiring bone repair.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this pilot experiment was to evaluate early bone response in two types of coated implants using the rabbit tibia model. Materials and Methods : Screw type titanium implants manufactured with a calcium metaphosphate (CMP) coating and hydroxyapatite (HA) coating were placed in the tibiae of 3 New Zealand White rabbits. The bone responses at 2 weeks after insertion were evaluated and compared by histomorphometry. Results : There was no significant difference in bone-to-implant contact between the groups (P>.05). However, some qualitative differences on histologic views were found. Conclusions : CMP-coating is suggested to be the preferred candidate for fast osseointegration over HAcoating.

  • The riffle beetle genus Leptelmis is newly recorded in the Korean fauna with descriptions of two new species, L. coreana, n. sp. and L. ochra, n. sp. Dorsal habitus and line-drawings of diagnostic characters are provided. The adults of L. coreana and L. ochra are similar to those of L. gracilis Sharp or L. parallela Nomura in general appearance, but can be distinguished by the absence of apical spurs on the middle and hind tibiae, light brown body color, smaller body size, and the shape of aedeagus apex. Leptelmis coreana can be distinguished from L. ochra by the absence of hindwings, lack of prominent humeri and wider elytra in posterior portion. Adults of both species occur in lowland streams and large rivers, but L. ochra were encountered relatively infrequently.

  • Lobohalacarus weberi (Romijn and Viets, 1924) is added to the halacarid fauna of Korea as the third member of freshwater halacarid species. Both the genus and species are newly recorded from Korea. Halacarid mites were collected from two hillside wells and a streamside hyporheic zone in the southeastern region of South Korea. Lobohalacarus weberi is characterized by a well-developed frontal spine-like process, seven dorsal setae, the fourth segment of palp with a short distal and three long proximal setae, and tibiae of legs II to IV with two, one, two pectinate setae, respectively. A few minor individual variabilities were observed in the number of perigenital seta and genital acetabula, the setal armature on genua of legs, and the shape of spinule row on lateral claws.

  • We discovered a halacarid mite species, Isobactrus tuberculatus Abé, 1996, inhabiting marine plastic debris on the coast of Jeju Island, Korea. The key characteristics of these Korean specimens were consistent with those in the original description of specimens from Hokkaido, Japan, including the presence of tuberculate membranous cuticles between the anterior and posterior dorsal plates, fusion of the posterior epimeral plates I and II, tibia II with a bipectinate seta, tibiae III and IV each with five setae, and a pair of subgenital setae in females. However, two small morphological differences were noted: the distance between the anterior and posterior dorsal plates was shorter than that in Japanese specimens, and the location of dorsal seta-2 was closer to the anterior dorsal plate in Korean specimens. We herein provide detailed illustrations of I. tuberculatus, based on the Korean specimens, with a brief taxonomic comment on the similarities among allied congeneric species. The genus Isobactrus is first reported in Korea.

  • Statement of problem: An orthodontic miniscrew implant has been used as a skeletal anchorage for orthodontic treatment. However, any relation among the influence of the cortical bone, morphologic differences of orthodontic miniscrew implants and new bone formation hasn't been made clear yet. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the orthodontic miniscrew implant could work as an intraoral skeletal anchorage immediately and stably for orthodontic treatment after insertion of it. Material and methods: Two types of orthodontic miniscrew implants were used in this experiment; tapered type and straight type. One hundred and sixty eight orthodontic miniscrew implants were inserted into the tibiae of 21 rabbits and sacrificed on 3, 7, 11, 14, 21 and 28days later after insertion of them to study removal torque values and histologic and histomorphometric analyses. Results: The results were as follows. 1. The removal torque values of the tapered type were higher than those of the straight type in all groups(p<0.05). 2. There wasn't any distinguishing differences between the tapered type and the straight type about the new bone formation percentage. 3. The removal torque values for both the tapered type and the straight type were gradually decreased at early stages of the test but started to increase at the 7 days group of the straight type and the 11 days group of the tapered type. 4. New bone formation percentage was increased gradually for both the tapered and the straight types as time passed(p<0.05). 5. It was found that the tapered type showed lower values in the cortical bone about both the maximum equilibratory stress distribution and the maximum principal stress distribution than the straight type in linear finite elements analysis. Conclusion: According to the research, the removal torque values were decreased at 7 days group of the tapered type and 11 days group of the straight type after the insertion of the orthodontic miniscrew implants in tibiae of rabbits. Considering the human bone activity, it is better to apply the orthodontic force $3{\sim}4$ weeks later than to apply it immediately after the insertion of orthodontic miniscrew implants. Considering that general orthodontic force is about $250{\sim}500$ grams, the tapered type can be worked as a stable skeletal anchor age in an orthodontic treatment even if the orthodontic force is applied on it immediately after the insertion of it.
