  • The mission life of a satellite determines the amount of fuel required on-board, while the total mass requirement limits the fuel to be loaded. Hence, for the design of thruster control loop, not only the satellite pointing accuracy but the saving of fuel is to be considered. In this paper, a two-step fuzzy controller is proposed for the thruster control loop to save fuel consumption. This approach combines requirements for pointing control accuracy with minimum fuel consumption into a fuzzy controller design. To demonstrate this approach, we have designed a fuzzy controller for the Sun point Mode of KOMPSAT-2. The performance of this fuzzy controller design is compared with that of PD controller used for KOMPSAT-2.

  • This paper shows an autopilot design example with simulation results for a medium range surface-to-air missile used to intercept fast maneuver targets. The missile is assumed to use both aerodynamic fins and side thrusters to achieve fast time response. The steady-state maneuver capability of the missile is assumed to be enough at high altitude to engage usual maneuvering targets. Side thruster is used to get an extremely rapid acceleration response at high altitude where the missile´s aerodynamic control effectiveness is weak. The strategy of control design is firstly to employ side thrusters to achieve a rapid response and then to hand-over the control to the aerodynamic fins to maintain the desired acceleration command in the steady state ...

  • Time-optimal performances are analyzed in the sense of inner loop. A varying-time sharing thrusting logic is suggested as a new sequential paired thrusting logic for fast maneuvers of satellites with coupled thruster configuration. Its time-optimal maneuvering performance is compared with two conventional thrusting logics: separate thrusting logic and constant-time sharing sequential paired thrusting logic. It is found that the newly suggested varying-time sharing thrusting logic can be easily implemented by adjusting the conventional constant-time logic with its thrust on-time, while it can reduce the maneuvering time enormously as much as the separate thrusting logic. The performance of the logic is simulated on the agile maneuvering spacecraft model KOMPSAT-II.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) started preliminary research about the propulsion system for lunar orbiter and moon lander this year in order to prepare korean moon exploration plan of 2020s. The final goal of this study is to develop a prototype propulsion system for lunar exploration and to perform ground landing test using this propulsion system. In this year, preliminary design of propulsion system and 200N class monopropellant thruster have been conducted. In this paper, the trade-off study result and the design concept of the propulsion system for Korean moon exploration will be introduced and preliminary design of propulsion system will be presented.

  • One of the way to derive design parameters of the fuel feeding system in satellite propulsion system is to analyze unsteady flow of liquid propellant (hydrazine). During steady thruster firing the flow rate is constant: if a thruster valve is abruptly shut down among a set of thrusters, pressure spikes much higher than the initial tank pressure occur. This renders the fuel flow unsteady, and the fluid pressure and flow rate to oscillate. If the pressure spikes are high enough, there are possibilities that propellant explosively decomposes, thruster valves we damaged, and adiabatic detonation of the hydrazine propellant is potentially incurred. Reflected shockwaves could also affect the calibration and operation of the pressure transducers. These necessitate the analysis of unsteady flow in the propulsion system design, and pressure behavior inside the propellant line obtained through some governing parameter variation is presented in this work.

  • The thruster valve, which is one of the key components applied to the mono-propellant system for the satellite, has a circular plate spring structure. It can be designed as a structure that does not have positional deformation and particles by friction and repetitive motion. In this study, finite element analysis and verification were performed by setting the width of the circular plate spring as a design parameter with the material, thickness and radius of the circular plate spring as fixed variables. The linearity of the spring constant is shown by the graph that is spring force with displacement. It is confirmed that the optimization design of the circular plate spring is possible by the spring force tendency according to the total area of circular plate spring.

  • With the global paradigm shift towards climate change, the shipbuilding industry is also considering propulsion systems that utilize eco-friendly fuels various propulsion systems are gaining attention as a result. In conventional propulsion systems, typically consisting of propellers and rudders, have evolved into a diverse range of systems due to the development of a special propulsion system known as the azimuth thruster. While azimuth thrusters were previously commonly installed on tugboats, they are now extensively used on offshore plant operation ships equipped with dynamic positioning systems. However, these azimuth thrusters require different steering methods compared to conventional propulsion systems, leading to a significant learning curve for the crew members boarding such vessels. Furthermore the availability of education related to these special propulsion systems is limited. This study aims to analyze accidents caused by inadequate control of vessels equipped with azimuth thrusters using the STAMP technique. And it proposes the necessity of standard steering commands for the safe operation of vessels equipped with special propellers.

  • A Xenon feed system has been developed for a 300 W Hall-effect thruster intended for orbit maintenance of small satellite. The system can store about 2 kg of xenon gas at 150 bar and is capable of controlling the mass flow rate of the gas at 0.5 SCCM resolution. The performance of the system is verified with a laboratory experiment. It is confirmed that the operation of the feed system is successful at a pressure level of $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$ torr in the vacuum chamber.

  • Performance evaluation was carried out for the 70 N-class hydrazine thruster whose design performance had been already verified. The pulse-mode firing test was conducted for the development model thrusters with various thrust chamber diameters. Evaluation was made by the performance parameters such as specific impulse, impulse bit, and characteristic velocity, etc: specific impulse and characteristic velocity were deteriorated as the thrust chamber diameter deviates from a standard model. Consequently, it is revealed that the performance characteristics of standard model is most superior among the test models.
