  • Comprehensive information on genetic diversity and introgression is desirable for the design of rational breed improvement and conservation programs. Despite the concerns regarding the genetic introgression of Western pig breeds into the gene pool of the Korean native pig (KNP), the level of this admixture has not yet been quantified. In the present study, we genotyped 93 animals, representing four Western pig breeds and KNP, using the porcine SNP 60K BeadChip to assess their genetic diversity and to estimate the level of admixture among the breeds. Expected heterozygosity was the lowest in Berkshire (0.31) and highest in Landrace (0.42). Population differentiation ($F_{ST}$) estimates were significantly different (p<0.000), accounting for 27% of the variability among the breeds. The evidence of inbreeding observed in KNP (0.029) and Yorkshire (0.031) may result in deficient heterozygosity. Principal components one (PC1) and two (PC2) explained approximately 35.06% and 25.20% of the variation, respectively, and placed KNP somewhat proximal to the Western pig breeds (Berkshire and Landrace). When K = 2, KNP shared a substantial proportion of ancestry with Western breeds. Similarly, when K = 3, over 86% of the KNP individuals were in the same cluster with Berkshire and Landrace. The linkage disquilbrium (LD) values at $r^2_{0.3}$, the physical distance at which LD decays below a threshold of 0.3, ranged from 72.40 kb in Landrace to 85.86 kb in Yorkshire. Based on our structure analysis, a substantial level of admixture between Western and Korean native pig breeds was observed.

  • The series of the papers consist of three parts to describe the development, calibration, and applications of the flood forecasting models for the Youngsan Estuarine Dam located at the mouth of the Youngsan river. And this paper discusses the hydrologic model for inflow simulation at Naju station, which constitutes 64 percent of the drainage basin of 3521 .6km$^2$ in area. A simplified TANK model was formulated to simulate hourly runoff from rainfall And the model parameters were optirnized using historical storm data, and validated with the records. The results of this paper were summarized as follows. 1. The simplified TANK model was formulated to conceptualize the hourly rainfall-run-off relationships at a watershed with four tanks in series having five runoff outlets. The runoff from each outlet was assumed to be proportional to the storage exceeding a threshold value. And each tank was linked with a drainage hole from the upper one. 2. Fifteen storm events from four year records from 1984 to 1987 were selected for this study. They varied from 81 to 289rn'm The watershed averaged, hourly rainfall data were determined from those at fifteen raingaging stations using a Thiessen method. Some missing and unrealistic records at a few stations were estimated or replaced with the values determined using a reciprocal distance square method from abjacent ones. 3. An univariate scheme was adopted to calibrate the model parameters using historical records. Some of the calibrated parameters were statistically related to antecedent precipitation. And the model simulated the streamflow close to the observed, with the mean coefficient of determination of 0.94 for all storm events. 4. The simulated streamflow were in good agreement with the historical records for ungaged condition simulation runs. The mean coefficient of determination for the runs was 0.93, nearly the same as calibration runs. This may indicates that the model performs very well in flood forecasting situations for the watershed.

  • Recent prevalence of progressive scan display such as LCD TV demands the quality improvement of existing deinterlacing techniques that convert interlaced scan images including HDTV broadcasting to progressive scan images. In this paper, we proposea motion adaptive deinterlacing technique which can be used for spatial methods, temporal methods, and the spatial-temporal methods can be used for the deinterlacing techniques selectively based on the threshold values calculated by the statistics of motion in the video contents. We also propose an improved spatial deinterlacing technique that adaptively use M-ELA and DOI based on the slant of edges that are obtained by Sobel operation. The improved picture quality of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by objective and subjective quality tests on many test image sequences.

  • A lateral type MEMS inertial switch was designed on the same principle as spring-mass system. The MEMS switch is used for arming mechanism of the arm-fire device by sensing the applied acceleration. We analyzed the switching capability of the MEMS switch under various acceleration conditions via performance model. Simulation results showed that the MEMS switch works very well at 10 g when the applied acceleration slope does not exceed 10 g/msec. On the other hand, the threshold operating acceleration level simulation exceeded the requirement (10±2 g) due to the width and length of the spring by considering 10% tolerance of the design values. Design modification of doubling the width of the spring, which is difficult to reduce less than 10% tolerance in fabrication process, was proposed after confirming the simulation results comply the requirement.

  • In this paper, a novel implementation of a person verification system based on depth-weighted Hausdorff distance (DWHD) using the surface curvature of the face is proposed. The definition of Hausdorff distance is a measure of the correspondence of two point sets. The approach works by finding the nose tip that has a protrusion shape on the face. In feature recognition of 3D face image, one has to take into consideration the orientated frontal posture to normalize after extracting face area from original image. The binary images are extracted by using the threshold values for the curvature value of surface for the person which has differential depth and surface characteristic information. The proposed DWHD measure for comparing two pixel sets were used, because it is simple and robust. In the experimental results, the minimum curvature which has low pixel distribution achieves recognition rate of 98% among the proposed methods.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a real-time PCR method for the rapid detection and quantification of the protozoan pathogen Perkinsus olseni using a TaqMan probe. For the standard, genomic DNA was extracted from $10^5$ in vitro-cultured P. olseni trophozoites, and then 10-fold serial dilutions to the level of a single cell were prepared. To test the reliability of the technique, triplicates of genomic DNA were extracted from $5{\times}10^4$ cells and 10-fold serial dilutions to the level of 5 cells were prepared. The standards and samples were analyzed in duplicate using an $Exicycler^{TM}$ 96 real-time quantitative thermal block. For quantification, the threshold cycle ($C_T$) values of samples were compared with those obtained from standard dilutions. There was a strong linear relationship between the $C_T$ value and the log concentration of cells in the standard ($r^2$ = 0.996). Detection of DNA at a concentration as low as the equivalent of a single cell showed that the assay was sensitive enough to detect a single cell of P. olseni. The estimated number of P. olseni cells was similar to the original cell concentrations, indicating the reliability of P. olseni quantification by real-time PCR. Accordingly, the designed primers and probe may be used for the rapid detection and quantification of P. olseni from clam tissue, environmental water, and sediment samples.

  • Norovirus (NoV) is a major cause of food poisoning outbreaks in Korea. Most NoV outbreaks originate from environmental contamination, but bivalves such as oysters are also important vectors. Oyster Crassostrea gigas contamination by NoV has been reported in Korea, but no quantitative analyses of NoV have been performed. We investigated the NoV concentration in 21 oyster samples from a Korean commercial oyster-growing area with confirmed fecal contamination from January to December 2012, using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Additionally, we assessed the NoV concentration after heating to investigate the effects of heat treatment on NoV-infected oysters. In NoV-positive samples, the cycle threshold (Ct) values were 37.43-39.41 and 36.77-39.30, while viral concentrations were $8.97{\times}10^2-2.24{\times}10^2$ and $3.05{\times}10^2-7.47{\times}10^1$ copies/g for genogroups I and II, respectively. After heat treatment, NoV genogroup I decreased by 83.4%, 88.0%, 89.4% and 100% at $60^{\circ}C$, $68^{\circ}C$, $70^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$, respectively, for 15 min, while genogroup II respectively decreased by 67.3%, 76.3%, 80.1%, and 89.8% under the same conditions.

  • It is important to give lightning warning prior to a cloud-to-ground (CG) discharge within an Area of Concern (AOC) because most of lightning damage and victim are usually occurred by the first lightning in the AOC. The aim of this study is to find the optimal operation conditions of the automated lightning warning systems in order to make the best use of the available data. In this paper, the test-operated results of the automated lightning alert and risk management system (ALARM) based on detections of CG discharge and eletrostatic field and optimized at probability of lightning have been described. It was possible to obtain the following warning performance parameters: probability of detection (POD), false alarm ratio (FAR), probability of lightning (POL) and failure-to-warn rate (FTW). The data obtained from trial operation for 5months were not sufficient but the first analysis of domestic lightning warning was carried out. We have observed that the evaluated statistical results through trial operation depend on the various factors such as analysis methods and criteria, topographical conditions, etc. Also we suggest some methods for improvement of POL and POD including the finding of the optimal electric field threshold level to be used, based on the high values of FAR and FTW found in this work.

  • Recently, with the rapid demand expansion on the devices of digital image processing, the excellent quality of the images is required. However, the degradation of the images occurs in the processes of data acquisition, processing, and transmission by various external causes and the noise has been well known as the major cause of image degradation. There are a variety of noises to be added on the images, with typical example of AWGN. Hence, in this article, we suggested average filter algorithm processed by the threshold values using them applying standard deviation of local mask under the AWGN environment in this study. As the result of the simulation, The proposed algorithm shows a high PSNR of 24.56[dB] for Barbara images that had been damaged of AWGN(${\sigma}=15$), compared to the existing MF, CWMF and AWMF there were improvements by 3.34[dB], 2.57[dB], and 3.32[dB], respectively.

  • There is a variety of researches about recognition system using biometric data these days. In this study, we propose a new algorithm, uses simultaneous equation that made of the edge of objects, to segment an iris region without threshold values from an anterior eye image. The algorithm attempts to find a center area through calculated outskirts information of an iris, and decides the area where the most points are accumulated. To verify the proposed algorithm, we conducted comparative experiments to Hough transform and Daugman's method, based on 50 images anterior eye images. It was found that proposed algorithm is 5 and 75 times faster than on each algorithm, and showed high accuracy of detecting a center point (95.36%) more than Hough transform (92.43%). In foreseeable future, this study is expected to useful application in diverse department of human's life, such as, identification system using an iris, diagnosis a disease using an anterior image.
