  • In the field of design and manufacturing, there are many problems with managing dynamic states of three-dimensional (3D) objects. In order to solve these problems, the four-dimensional (4D) mesh model and its modeling system have been proposed. The 4D mesh model is defined as a 4D object model that is bounded by tetrahedral cells, and can represent spatio-temporal changes of a 3D object continuously. The 4D mesh model helps to solve dynamic problems of 3D models as geometric problems. However, the construction of the 4D mesh model is limited on the time-series 3D voxel data based method. This method is memory-hogging and requires much computing time. In this research, we propose a new method of constructing the 4D mesh model that derives from the 3D mesh model with continuous rigid body movement. This method is realized by making a swept shape of a 3D mesh model in the fourth dimension and its tetrahedralization. Here, the rigid body movement is a screwed movement, which is a combination of translational and rotational movement.

  • It is necessary to have a model that describes the feature of the knee Joint with a sufficient accuracy. Koreans, however, do not have their own knee joint model to be used in the total knee replacement arthroplasty. They have to use European or American models which do not match Koreans. Three-dimensional visualization techniques are found to be useful in a wide range of medical applications. Three-dimensional imaging studies such as CT(computed tomography) and MRI(magnetic resonance image) provide the primary source of patient-specific data. Three-dimensional knee joint models were constructed by image processing of the CT data of 10 subjects. Using the constructed model, the dimensions of Korean knee joint were measured. And this study proposed a three-dimensional model and data, which can be helpful to develop Korean knee implants and to analyze knee joint movements.

  • This paper describes a numerical study of three-dimensional buoyant turbulent flow in a stairwell model with three convective differencing schemes, which include the upwind differencing scheme, the hybrid scheme and QUICK scheme. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved with a two-equation turbulence model. The Boussinesq approximation is used to model buoyancy terms in the governing equations. Three-dimensional predictions of the velocity and temperature fields are presented and are compared with experimental data. Three-dimensional simulations with each scheme have predicted the overall features of the flow fairly satisfactorily. A better agreement with experimental is achieved with QUICK scheme.

  • Clinically, proximal bone resorption in the femur is frequently seen postoperatively on the follow up XI-rays after total hip replacement (THR). We developed the finite element model of cementless THR. The model is two dimensional side plate model, whereby the three dimensional structural integrity of the bone can be accounted for by a separate two dimensional mesh, a side plate. The subject of this article is the development and application of this two dimensional side plate FEM to study the reverse effect of the various degree of bone resorption of femur after THR. The results of this study indicates that 1) two dimensional side plate model is good and simple alternative to complex three dimensional model and 2) the severity of the proximal bone resorption has the effect of more increasing stress on the cortex at the level of femoral stem tip.

  • This study proposes a two-dimensional hyperbolic soil spring model for mat foundations in clays subjected to vertically uniform loads to simplify the complexity of three-dimensional finite element analysis on mat foundations. The solutions from three-dimensional finite element analysis were examined to determine the hyperbolic model parameters of the soil springs underneath the slab. Utilizing these model parameters, normalized functions across the middle section of the mat were obtained. The solutions from the proposed model, along with the approximate finite difference analysis of the mat in clays under vertical load, were found to be consistent with those from the three-dimensional finite element analysis. The authors conclude that the proposed method can serve as an alternative for the preliminary design of mat foundations.

  • As Simpson et al. (1990) emphasized the importance of the straining process in the stratification and mixing in the estuarine circulation process, various researches have investigated on the relative contribution of each process to the overall potential energy anomaly dynamics. However, many numerical works have done only for two dimensional modeling along channel or the short distance cross sectional three dimensional simulations as Burchard et al. (2008) and the estuarine channel was not simulated so far. But, in the study on the physics of shallow coastal seas, spatial dimension in the three dimensional way affects significantly on results of a particular numerical model. Therefore, the comparison of two and three dimensional models is important to understand the real physics of mixing and stratification in an estuary. Also, as Geyer and MacCready (2013) pointed out that the lateral process seems to be important in determining the periodic stratifications, to study such process the three dimensional modeling must be required. The present study uses a numerical model to show the signification roles of each term of the time-dependent dynamic equation for the potential energy anomaly (PEA) in controlling along and lateral channel flows and different stratification structures. Moreover, we present the relationships between the ${\Phi}$-advection, the depth mean straining, vertical mixing and vertical advection can explain well how water level, salinity distribution and across velocity 2D model are slightly different from 3D.

  • Bubble flow characteristics in fluidized beds were analyzed by CPFD simulation. A fluidized bed, which had the size of $0.3m-ID{\times}2.4m-high$, was modeled by commercial CPFD $Barracuda^{(R)}$. Properties of bed material were $d_p=150{\mu}m$, ${\rho}_p=2,330kg/m^3$, and $U_{mf}=0.02m/s$. Gas was uniformly distributed and the range of superficial gas velocity was 0.07 to 0.16 m/s. Two other geometries were modeled. The first was a three-dimensional model, and the other was a two-dimensional model of $0.01m{\times}0.3m{\times}2.4m$. Bubble size and rising velocity were simulated by axial and radial position according to superficial gas velocity. In the case of three-dimensional model, simulated bubble rising velocity was different from correlations, because there was zigzag motion in bubble flow, and bubble detection was duplicated. To exclude zigzag motion of bubble flow, bubble rising velocity was simulated in the two-dimensional model and compared to the result from three-dimensional model.

  • In this paper, The bulging behavior of the solidified shell in continuously cast slabs have been numerically analyzed using three-dimensional elasto-plastic and creep finite element method Three-dimensional model has been applied in order to investigate the effect of the narrow face shell on restraining the bulging deflection. Solidification analysis are carried out by two-dimensional finite difference method. In this way, strains occurring at the solidification front near the narrow face of the slab, as well as those occurring in the board face have been computed. The adequacy of the model has been checked against the experimental results. In addition, the effect of the slab width and casting speed on the bulging are discussed.
