An attempt is made to characterize and synthesize engineered surfaces. The proposed method is not only an analytical tool to characterize but alsoto generate/synthesize three-dimensional surfaces. The developed method expresses important engineered surface characteristics such as the autocorrelation or pwoer spectrum density functions in terms of the two-dimensional autoregressive coefficients.

One of the most distinguished advantages of five-axis machining is that complex free surfaces(such as impeller) can be machined by one setup. Five-axis CNC machine, however, is very expensive so that its usage is restricted to a few large companies. As an economical approach to five-axis machining, this paper presents a method for machining the five-axis free surfaces(using ball-end mill) on a three-axis CNC machine with an index table. The method developed consists of: a) determining the minimum number of part setups and their interference-free and collision-free potential machining area, b) calculating actual machining area for each setup, and c) generating 3-axis cutter path for each part setup. The method has been successfully tested via computer simulations for several complex surfaces including impeller.
We develop an invariant local theory of Lorentz surfaces in pseudo-Euclidean 4-space by use of a linear map of Weingarten type. We find a geometrically determined moving frame field at each point of the surface and obtain a system of geometric functions. We prove a fundamental existence and uniqueness theorem in terms of these functions. On any Lorentz surface with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field we introduce special geometric (canonical) parameters and prove that any such surface is determined up to a rigid motion by three invariant functions satisfying three natural partial differential equations. In this way we minimize the number of functions and the number of partial differential equations determining the surface, which solves the Lund-Regge problem for this class of surfaces.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of blood flow restriction and different support surfaces for bridge exercises on the thickness of the transverse abdominis and multifidus, which are trunk-stabilizing muscles. Methods: The study's subjects were 45 adults who were divided into three groups that performed bridge exercises over a six-week period on their respective support surfaces after blood flow restriction. Changes in the thickness of the subjects' transverse abdominis and multifidus muscles were measured using ultrasonography before the experiment, then three and six weeks after the experiment. The changes in each variable over time were analyzed using a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: The transverse abdominis showed significant differences in muscle thickness with regard to time and the interaction between time and each group (p<0.05), but no significant differences with regard to changes among groups (p>0.05). The multifidus showed significant differences in muscle thickness with regard to time, the interaction between time and each group, and changes between groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Blood flow restriction and different support surfaces for bridge exercises led to significant differences in the thickness of the transverse abdominis and multifidus. This study's results may be used as the basis for future studies and for rehabilitation in clinical practice.
Objectives: Although the coating of surface sealants to dental composite resin may potentially reduce bacterial adhesion, there seems to be little information regarding this issue. This preliminary in vitro study investigated the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) on the dental composite resins coated with three commercial surface sealants. Materials and Methods: Composite resin (Filtek Z250) discs (8 mm in diameter, 1 mm in thickness) were fabricated in a mold covered with a Mylar strip (control). In group PoGo, the surfaces were polished with PoGo. In groups PS, OG, and FP, the surfaces polished with PoGo were coated with the corresponding surface sealants (PermaSeal, PS; OptiGuard, OG; Fortify Plus, FP). The surfaces of the materials and S. mutans cells were characterized by various methods. S. mutans adhesion to the surfaces was quantitatively evaluated using flow cytometry (n = 9). Results: Group OG achieved the lowest water contact angle among all groups tested (p < 0.001). The cell surface of S. mutans tested showed hydrophobic characteristics. Group PoGo exhibited the greatest bacterial adhesion among all groups tested (p < 0.001). The sealant-coated groups showed statistically similar (groups PS and FP, p > 0.05) or significantly lower (group OG, p < 0.001) bacterial adhesion when compared with the control group. Conclusions: The application of the surface sealants significantly reduced S. mutans adhesion to the composite resin polished with the PoGo.

Deviation angles are predicted by numerical calculation of three-dimensional compressible flow through the rotating blade row in axial flow compressor. Three-dimensional flow fields are analyzed by the quasi three-dimensional combination of blade-to blade surfaces and hub-to shroud stream surfaces and calculated by the finite element method in the cyclic calculation of both stream surfaces. In the blade-to blade calculations the method of boundary stream line correction is used and in the hub-to shroud calculations the loss effects due to viscous flow are included. The computational results are compared with the available experimental one. It is shown that the computational results from blade-to-blade flow calculation are correct for incompressible, compressible low subsonic and high subsonic flow at the inlet, and the loss effects on the deviation angle can be neglected in the range of the subsonic flow less than the critical Mach number for the axisymmetric flow and even for 3-D non-axisymmetric flow with loss. And it is found that the present results are better agreed with the experimental data than Lieblein's one.
To reduce the friction losses and the wear amounts in the piston assembly two methods were proposed. One is the modification of surface profile of the skirt part. The surface coating is another method to protect the sliding surfaces. To modify the profile of the skirt surfaces the surfaces were ground to have three different shapes of profiles. Also, several coatings, such as graphite, TiN, and $MoS_2$, and DLC, were used to protect the surfaces of the piston skirts. The specimens of the skirt and the cylinder bores were tested with the reciprocating wear tester. SAE 5W40 engine oil was used in boundary lubrication regime. Among several coatings the graphite and DLC coatings were very effective to reduce the friction forces. Especially, DLC film represented much better tribological performances than the others. The friction coefficient of the graphite coating was the lowest, but the graphite coating was not effective to protect the surfaces.
No reliable basic data were available on the kinetic friction coefficients between grains and frictional surfaces being used in grain handling equipments in Korea. In order to determine appropriate kinetic friction coefficient between three grains (Tongil, Jinheung, barley) and two surfaces at four levels of moisture content of grain, the laboratory tests using the newly designed experimental apparatus and strain gage measuring system were carried out, and the relationship among factors that affect kinetic friction coefficients of grains were analyzed. The results of this study are summarized as follows ; 1. Kinetic friction coefficient of samples being tested was dependent on surfaces and moisture content of grains . The ranges of them were 0.369-0.512 for Tongil variety , 0.347-0.469 for Jinheung variety, and 0.360-0.502 for barley, respectively. 2. There was a little difference of kinetic friction coefficients between two varieties of rice at the same testing conditions. Because the interaction had been large among treatments , each value of kinetic friction coefficient determined in this study should be used only for the corresponding conditions in this study . 3. Kinetic friction coefficients in creased linearly with increase in moisture content of grains and their regression equations were shown in Table.4. 4. Kinetic friction coefficients on a PVC surfaces was shown a little lower values than on the steel surfaces at various moisture levels, but especially in Jinheung and barley, a big difference was shown.

In this paper, we classify translation surfaces in the three dimensional Galilean space ${\mathbb{G}}_3$ satisfying some algebraic equations in terms of the coordinate functions and the Laplacian operators with respect to the second fundamental form of the surface. We also give explicit forms of these surfaces.
In many practical lubricated contacts such as a rough concentrated contact on the sliding of nominally flat surfaces, the fluid may be of molecular (nanometer) scale owing to the asperity interactions on the surfaces. Under this condition, there is insufficient lubricant on the concentrated contact spot to maintain a realistic continuum. Rheological behavior for this kind of concentrated contact has been studied extensively to know whether the application of viscous fluid model is appropriate. The interaction of two rough surfaces is simplified as perfectly flat-rough surfaces contact under certain conditions by "composite topography" and for a nanometer scale fluid film, three kinds of rheological fluid behavior are analyzed in elastohydrodynamic asperity point contact.t contact.
