Pinus species are native to the Northern Hemisphere and some parts of the tropics to temperate regions in the Southern Hemisphere. They were used as food and medicine in prehistoric times. Massonianoside B is a compound found in pine trees and possesses antioxidant activity. In order to determine the presence and content of this compound in Pinus species, three different parts (needles, branches, and bark) of three Pinus species were extracted and investigated. High-performance liquid chromatography with a gradient elution system along with a reverse-phase INNO column with photodiode array detector was employed. Results showed that the branches of the three Pinus species had higher massonianoside B content (5.502 to 9.751 mg/g DW) than either the needles or bark. Furthermore, among the three species, P. rigida × P. taeda had the highest concentration of total massonianoside B (11.557 mg/g DW). These findings thus provide evidence of biological activity in Pinus species and establish a foundation for further research.
The diatoms were investigated at three lowland swamps in Haman county form July, 1983 to July, 1984 on monthly interval. Seasonal changes of standing crops, the variation of dominant species and species composition were studied. The maximum of standing crops showed bimodal pattern at Chilnalpol and Yujnnup. Dominant species were Navicula crytocephala, Cocconeis placentula, Achnanthes minutissima, Achnanthes lanceolata, Synedra ulna, Eunotia lunaris. Dominant species changed seasonally. Total 166species of diatom were identified. Three lowland swamps supported a rich diatom flora composed of many species typically associated with benthic diatom.
Three species of Acrolepiopsis: A. issikiella (Moriuti, 1961), A. japonica Gaedike, 1982, and A. postomacula (Matsumura, 1931), are recorded from Korea for the first time. Acrolepiopsis issikiella is characterized by having the white costal strigulae and a large dorsal patch on the forewing. Acrolepidopsis japonica is the smallest congener in Korea. Acrolepiopsis postomacula is the only Korean species of Acrolepiinae associated with Hosta. Distributions and larval biology of the three species are summarized. Two species, A. issikiella and A. japonica, are potential pest species of yam-cultivating farms in Korea. Superficial and genital features of the species, if available, are illustrated.
Background: The positive effects of Arctic plants on the soil environment and plant-species co-occurrence patterns are known to be particularly important in physically harsh environments. Although three dominant plants (Cassiope tetragona, Dryas octopetala, and Silene acaulis) are abundant in the Arctic ecosystem at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, few studies have examined their occurrence patterns with other species and their buffering effect on soil-temperature and soil-moisture fluctuation. To quantify the plant-species co-occurrence patterns and their positive effects on soil environments, I surveyed the vegetation cover, analyzed the soil-chemical properties (total carbon, total nitrogen, pH, and soil organic matter) from 101 open plots, and measured the daily soil-temperature and soil-moisture content under three dominant plant patches and bare soil. Results: The Cassiope tetragona and Dryas octopetala communities increased the soil-temperature stability; however, the three dominant plant communities did not significantly affect the soil-moisture stability. Non-metric multidimensional scaling separated the sampling sites into three groups based on the different vegetation compositions. The three dominant plants occurred randomly with other species; however, the vegetation composition of two positive co-occurring species pairs (Oxyria digyna-Cerastium acrticum and Luzula confusa-Salix polaris) was examined. The plant species richness did not significantly differ in the three plant communities. Conclusions: The three plant communities showed distinctive vegetation compositions; however, the three dominant plants were randomly and widely distributed throughout the study sites. Although the facilitative effects of the three Arctic plants on increases in the soil-moisture fluctuation and richness were not quantified, this research enables a deeper understanding of plant co-occurrence patterns in Arctic ecosystems and thereby contributes to predicting the shift in vegetation composition and coexistence in response to climate warming. This research highlights the need to better understand plant-plant interactions within tundra communities.
A total of 29 scale insect species belonging to 21 genera of five families were recognized on 11 fruit trees on the basis of specimens collected from 2001 to 2002 and specimens deposited in the Insect Collection of NIAST in Korea. Ten species were recognized on apple, nine species on pear, three species on peach, 14 species on unshiu orange, nine species on persimmon, two species on Japanese plum, one species on japanese apricot, 10 species on junos orange, one species on grape, four species on jujube and three species on kiwi fruit.
The morphology and infraciliature of three newly recorded Aspidisca species in Korea, two collected from the eastern coast and one collected from Jeju Island, were investigated in vivo and after protargol impregnation. The three species are as follows: A. dentata Kahl, 1928, A. hexeris Quennerstedt, 1869, and A. polystyla Stein, 1859. The three species are characterized by having a "polystyla-arrangement" of frontoventral cirri: 1) A. dentata is characterized by having a broadly rotund body shape, a distinct peristomial spur, and a dorsal thorn; 2) A. hexeris is characterized by a broadly oval body shape, four projections along the left margin of body, and the single peristomial spur; and 3) A. polystyla has the broadly rotund body shape, transverse cirri each split into several parts (especially in vivo), and lacking of the peristomial spur. Among them, A. dentata and A. polystyla are poorly known and lack morphological description based on silver staining. In the present study, we provide a brief diagnosis, remarks, and photomicrographs.

Three species of seed beetles, Acanthoscelides pallidipennis (Motschulsky, 1874), Bruchidius terrenus (Sharp, 1886), and Kytorhinus senilis Solsky, 1869, from South Korea are reported for the first time. These three species can be morphologically distinguished from other Korean bruchid species by the distinctive color pattern of the elytra, presence of subapical spines on hind femur, and exposed last three tergites of abdomen, respectively. In this study, partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I from Korean specimens of these species were generated. In addition, host plants, distribution maps, and photographs of the dorsal habitus and live specimens of each species are also included.

We performed a taxonomic study on Korean freshwater bryozoans with the materials collected from 70 localities during 2014 to 2016. A total of 14 Korean freshwater bryozoans are reported through this study. Among them, three Plumatellids, Plumatella fungosa (Pallas, 1768), P. repens (Linnaeus, 1758), and P. reticulata Wood, 1988, are newly added to the Korean fauna. Three species were redescribed with only their statoblasts: Lophopodella carteri, Plumatella rugosa, and Stephanosella hina (Seo, 1998; 2005; Chae et al., 2016). Their colonies were found in Korea for the first time in this study. Since Fredericella sultana, Hyalinella punctata, and Plumatella casmiana were reported from Korea (Toriumi, 1941), neither statoblast nor colony has been found, but we observed them. Living colonies of six species were photographed in the field. Furthermore, the statoblasts of nine species, including three species new to the Korean fauna, were also documented using scanning electron microscopy.

Asterochloris is one of the most common genera of lichen phycobionts in Trebouxiophyceae. Asterochloris phycobionts associated with the lichenized fungi Cladonia and Stereocaulon in King George Island (Antarctica) and Morro Chico (Chile), were isolated and then used to establish clonal cultures. To understand the phylogenetic relationships and species diversity of Antarctic Asterochloris species, molecular and morphological data were analyzed by using three microscopy techniques (light, confocal laser and transmission electron) and a multi-locus phylogeny with data from the nuclear-encoded internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA and the actin and plastid-encoded ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase large chain (rbcL) coding genes. Morphological data of three Antarctic strains showed significant species-specific features in chloroplast while molecular data segregated the taxa into distinct three clades as well. Each species had unique molecular signatures that could be found in secondary structures of the ITS1 and ITS2. The species diversity of Antarctic Asterochloris was represented by six taxa, namely, A. glomerata, A. italiana, A. sejongensis, and three new species (A. antarctica, A. pseudoirregularis, A. stereocaulonicola).
The testis is an extremely heterogeneous organ, containing numerous compartments types. Morphometric studies were performed of 3 avian species (pigeon, pheasant and chicken) to determine volume density absolute volume, numerical density, total number of serminiferous tubule components, and sperm production, especially those related to the Sertoli cell, and to make comparisons among the species. Volume density of seminiferous tubule components per testis was determined by point counting method. Testis volume and sperm production were measured by routine techniques. Numerical density (the number of cells per unit volume of testis) of seminiferous tubule components per testis was determined by morphometry (Floderus method). The volume density of seminiferous tubules per testis was 91.58, 92.18 and 94.21% in pigeon, pheasant, and chicken, respectively. The volume density of spermatogonium, spermatocyte, spermatid, spermatozoon, and Sertoli cell did not produce significant changes in the three species. The absolute volume of spermatogonium, spermatocyte, spermatid, and Sertoli cell showed significant changes in the three species (p<0.05). The average volume of Sertoli cell ranged from 758.34(pheasant) to 1,212.9 ㎛$^3$(chicken) and was not significantoy different in the three species(p>0.05). The number of Sertoli cells per testis showed significant differences in the three species : 34.52 $\times$10(sup)6, 186.82$\times$10(sup)6, 810.62$\times$10(sup)6 in pigeon, pheasant, and chicken, respectively(p<0.05). The sperm production was significantly different in the three species : 3,018$\times$10(sup)6, 993.9$\times$10(sup)6, and 8.9$\times$10(sup)6 in chicken, pheasant, and pigeon, respectively(p<0.05). These results suggest that number of Sertoli cells may be more important than Sertoli cell size in explaining the difference in sperm production among the three species.
