Three species of the family Processidae, Hayashidonus japonicus (De Haan, 1844), Processa sulcata Hayashi, 1975 and Processa zostericola Hayashi, 1975 described with illustrations from Korea. Two of these species, H. japonicus and P. zostericola, represent new records for the Korean carcinological fauna. The genus Hayashidonus included the single species, H. japonicus is distinguished from other genera of Processidae by the broadly triangular rostrum, the obscure or absent dorsolateral spines of the telson, and the exceptionally long molar process of the mandible. Two species of the genus Processa, P. zostericola and P. sulcata are distinguishable each other by presence or absence of an obtuse process of the basicerite of antenna on the anteroventral margin. The basicerite of antenna arms with the obtuse process in P. zostericola, while in P. sulcata the basicerite of antenna lacks the process but is smooth on the ventral margin. A key to these species is presented.
Peach (Prunus persica L.) is one of the major fruit crops in South Korea, along with apple, persimmon, and Asian pears. Peach anthracnose is a continuing threat to growers and is accountable for enormous economic loss. In July 2018, anthracnose of peach appeared at different peach orchards in Gyeongsangbuk-do region, Korea. The typical anthracnose symptoms (brown, circular, and necrotic lesions) were observed on the fruits. Anthracnose of peach was surveyed in different peach orchards of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and 20 fungal isolates from 19 diseased fruits were collected. Multigene phylogenetic analyses coupled with morphological characteristic analysis approaches were used for identifying the fungal species isolated from diseased fruits. This study confirmed three Colletotrichum species. Based on the results, Colletotrichum siamense are reported for the first time as causal agents of peach anthracnose alongside C. fructicola and C. fioriniae, which has been reported previously. Pathogenicity assays were performed for the three isolates representing all the species identified, and Koch's postulates on detached healthy peach fruits were verified. All the identified species were pathogenic on peach fruits as the typical anthracnose symptoms were reproduced. Significant variations in the virulence were observed among fungal species on peach fruit.
The laboratory and green house studies evaluated the effect of three different environmental factors on the seed germination, seedling emergence and survival of four major weed species in coconut plantations, Mimosa pudica, Ureana lobata, Panicum maximum and Pennisetum polystachyon. Germination percentage of all the weed species was significantly reduced with increasing soil moisture stress, no germination was observed at -0.9 MPa. Germination of both grass seeds ranged from 8% to 25% and 10% to 45% as moisture stress decreased from -0.4 MPa to 0 MPa, respectively. In contrast, seeds of M. pudica, and U. lobata were moderately tolerant to soil moisture stress and best adapted to moist environment. All the weed species seeds germinated over a wide range of soil pH values with the highest germination occurring at pH 6. In all the species, seedling emergence was declined rapidly with increasing depth with the exception of U. lobata. Seedling emergence significantly declined when the duration of flooding was three days or longer in dicotyledonous weed species and two days or longer in monocotyledonous weeds. This study illustrates the adaptability of these weeds to different environmental conditions which would enable the development of management strategies to reduce their populations below economic threshold levels in coconut plantations.
Species composition and distribution patterns of shellfish were investigated in Eoeun and Geojeon tidal flat located in the Saemangeum area on the west coast of Korea from May to October 2000. Nineteen species of shellfish were collected in Geojeon tidal flat. The samples in number of individuals included Umbonium thomasi $(90.0\%)$ and Mactra veneriformis $(5.0\%).$ In Eoeun tidal flat, ten species of shellfish were collected and the dominant species in number of individuals were Potamocorbula amurensis $(55.0\%)$ and U. thomasi $(18.6\%).$ These results were compared with previous studies conducted before the beginning of reclamation in Saemangeum. Compared with the results from 1988, a change In species composition was observed. Laternula flexuosa and Nuttallia olivacea appeared, while Mactra chinensis and Coelomactra antiquata disappeared in the deposition area in Geojeon tidal flat. In the erosion area of Eoeun tidal flat, M. veneriformis and Meretrix lusoria appeared, while Cyclina sinensis disappeared. Based on a cluster analysis, the shellfish community in Eoeun tidal flat was classified into three station groups based on sediment types. Geojeon tidal flat was also classified into three station groups. The distribution of shellfish in the Saemangeum area was closely related to the sediment types.

Numerical study on preferential diffusion effects in flame structure in $CH_4-H_2$ diffusion flames is conducted with detailed chemistry. Comparison of flame structures with mixture-averaged species diffusion and suppression of the diffusivities of $H_2$ and H was made. Discernible differences in flame structures are displayed with three species diffusion models. The behaviors of maximum flame temperatures with those species diffusion models are not explained by scalar dissipation rate but by the nature of chemical kinetics. It is seen that the modifcation of flame structure is mainly due to the preferential diffusion of H2 and thereby the nature of chemical kinetics. It is also found that the behaviors of major species with the three species diffusion models are addressed to the nature of chemical kinetics, and this is evident by examining importantly contributing reaction steps to the production and destruction of those chemical species.
In 2012, fishes caught by three-side fyke net in the coastal waters of Jedo were assessed for species composition and seasonal fluctuation in their abundance. The fish were caught at two research stations (St.) and were found to comprise 53 species, 39 families, and 9 orders. The dominant species were Takifugu niphobles, Lateolabrax maculatus, and Acanthopagrus schlegelii. To gain a measure of their biodiversity, all the species were assessed for their number, richness, diversity, evenness, and dominance. The highest and lowest number of total caught fish individuals was recorded in summer and winter, respectively. The diversity index was the highest in summer and lowest in winter. The evenness index was the highest in summer and lowest in spring. The richness index was highest in summer and lowest in winter. Furthermore, the dominance index was highest in spring and lowest in autumn.
This taxonomic study sought to detect and describe diatom species not yet recorded in Korea. The study was conducted at three islands located off the western coast of Korea, Wido Island near Buan, Wonsando Island near Boryeong and Dekjeokdo Island near Incheon. Diatoms were collected from the bottom, stone, macrophytes and other substrates in water bodies, which are affected by seawater. Fifteen naviculoid taxa are described. Of these, 13 are novel to Korea. The genus Navicula has nine species; Navicula alineae Lange-Bertalot, N. ammophila Grunow, N. cariocincta Lange-Bertalot, N. elegantoides Hustedt, N. longicephala Hustedt, N. normaloides Cholnoky, N. notha Wallace, N. novaesiberica Lange-Bertalot, N. riediana Lange-Bertalot & U. Rumrich. The genus Craticula has four species; Craticula buderi (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot, C. halophila (Grunow) D.G. Mann, C. riparia (Hustedt) Lange-Bertalot and C. riparia var. mollenhaueri Lange-Bertalot.

The purpose of this study was to propose the community planting method through analyzing the plant community structure of three green space types and the relationship of vegetation and wild bird inhabitation of urban environmental forest in Seoul, Korea. The results from this study showed that the vegetation stratification, coverage, and species diversity were closely related to the wild bird inhabitation. In addition, the environmental forest in study site was analyzed as a negative factor that may decrease the biodiversity. Therefore the ecological structure and environmental condition must be considered in order to improve the quality of environmental forest. Based on results in three green space types, the planting species, density and species size for proper community planting were proposed in this study. The ecological niche relationships among sixteen selected species were also presented. The results will be provided as an valueable output for the completed community planting of urban green space in the central region, Korea.
Tracheid structure of aerial system in five species of Ophioglossaceae and one species of Osmundaceae was examined with light and scanning electron microscopy. The species were Botrichium multifidum var. robustrum, B. ternatum, strictum, B. virginianum, Ophioglossum vulgatum, and Osmunda japonica. Three types of tracheids could be recognized by the pattern of secondary wall thickening; helical, irregular reticulate and circular bordered pitted tracheids. Among them, the appearance of circular bordered pitted tracheids supported that ophioglossaceous plants might have phylogenetic relationship with progymnosperm-seed plant line. Circular and elliptical bordered pits in shape were observed in five ophioglossaceous species; the former was subdivided into large and small types in size. In conclusion, three types of bordered pits were found: (1) large circular type- O. vulgatum, (2) small circular type- B. multifidum var. robustrum, B. ternatum and (3) elliptical type-B. strictum, B. virginianum. B. strictum and B. virginianum belong to subgenus Osmundopteris had the elliptical bordered pits. Therefore, this group might be interpreted as the most primitive in this family; however, such suggestion did subgenus Osmundopteris was classified into the most advanced group.
Some Compositae plants are known to contain biologically active substances that are allelopathic to weeds species as well as antioxidant to foods. Aqueous extracts from leaves of 3 plant species, Cirsium japonica, Kalimeris yomena, and Lactuca saliva, were bioassayed against alfalfa (Medicago saliva) to determine their allelopathic effects. The extracts applied on filter paper in bioassay significantly inhibited root growth of alfalfa. Extracts of 20 g dry tissue $\textrm{L}^{-1}$ from Lactuca sativa showed the most inhibitory effect on alfalfa seedling growth and followed by Cirsium japonica and Kalimeris yomena. Oxidative stability by Rancimat method and antioxidant activity by TBA method for the ground samples were the greatest in Lactuca sativa although were less than that of a commonly used antioxidant, 1% ascorbic acid. Antioxidant activity of methanol extracts on storing meat was stably kept for 28days and was excellent compared to control. These results suggest that three Compositae plants have potent allelopathic and antioxidant effects, and that their activities differ, depending on plant species.
