This study investigated the adaptability of 3rd grade children in Taejon who had started first grade at 5 years of age. Subjects were 64 third grade children, half of whom had started first grade at 5 years and half at 6 years of age. Thirty-four parents and 36 elementary school teachers were also sampled. The General Intelligence Test, the Learning and Thinking Ability Test, and the Socio-Emotional Development Checklist were administered to the children. Parents and Teachers responded to the Questionnaire on the Adaptability of Early Entrance Children. There were no statistically significant differences between children who started first grade at 5 and those who started at 6 years of age in their Intelligence scores, Learning and Thinking Ability scores, and the Socio-Emotional Development scores. Parents as sell as teachers felt that the early entrance system was positive for children.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception and intake of Kimchi in middle school students in Gwangju area and analyzed the difference of Kimchi intake according to Kimchi perception level to provide basic data to help middle school students develop proper dietary behavior. The data were collected from middle school students in Gwangju area and 374 questionnaires were used for analysis. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the perception of Kimchi of middle school students was 4.10 for first grade and 3.92 for third grade, showed significant difference (p<0.001) between first grade and third grade. Second, the preference of Kimchi of middle school students by grade showed significant difference between first grade and third grade at 'Kimchi preference' (p<0.001) and 'Reasons for not eating Kimchi' (p<0.05) respectively. 81.7% in the first graders and 59.8% in the third graders, and the first graders more preferred Kimchi than the third graders. Third, the pattern of Kimchi intake of middle school students by grade showed significant difference between first grade and third grade at 'Frequency of Kimchi intake' (p<0.05) and 'Amount of Kimchi taken at one time' (p<0.05) respectively. Fourth, the education of Kimchi of middle school students by grade showed significant difference between first grade and third grade at 'My attitude toward Kimchi recommendation' (p<0.05), 'Necessity of Kimchi intake education' (p<0.05), 'Whether you think it is good food for Kimchi information' (p<0.001), 'Preferred method for the Kimchi education' (p<0.001) and 'Methods for increasing Kimchi intake' (p<0.05) respectively. Fifth, the preference of Kimchi of middle school students by the degree of Kimchi recognition showed significant difference at 'Kimchi preference' (p<0.001), 'Reasons for liking Kimchi' (p<0.05) and 'Reasons for disliking Kimchi' (p<0.05) respectively. The pattern of Kimchi intake of middle school students by the degree of Kimchi recognition showed significant difference at 'Frequency of Kimchi intake' (p<0.001) and 'Amount of Kimchi taken at one time'(p<0.05) respectively. The the education of Kimchi of middle school students by the degree of Kimchi recognition showed significant difference at 'My attitude toward Kimchi recommendation' (p<0.05), 'The experience of making Kimchi' (p<0.05), 'Necessity of Kimchi intake education' (p<0.001) and 'Whether you think it is good food for Kimchi information' (p<0.001) respectively.

Objective : The aim of this study was to compare clinical characteristics of ruptured aneurysms in young adults, of the third and fourth decades of life, and to compare several clinical characteristics affecting the outcome of patients. Methods : We retrospectively investigated 1459 patients who underwent surgery and endovascular treatment for ruptured cerebral aneurysms from June 1992 to December 2010 and compared clinical characteristics. We also reviewed pre-existing medical conditions and perioperative complications. Results : Among 1459 patients, there were 21 patients (1.44%) in the third decade and 104 patients (7.13%) in the fourth decade of life. Within two age groups, 88 (70.4%) were male and 37 (29.6%) were female, a ratio of 2.37 : 1. In both groups, we observed the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) aneurysm with the most frequency (p=0.028). In general, favorable outcome was achieved in both age groups (90.5% and 81.7%, respectively). An initial univariate analysis showed Hunt-Hess grade, Fisher grade, location of aneurysm, and rebleeding significantly associated with outcome after aneurysm rupture. Further, multivariate analysis demonstrated that only Hunt-Hess grade (grade 4-5) was a risk factor for the outcome (odds ratio=9.730, 95% confidence interval 2.069-45.756, p=0.004). Conclusion : The incidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) was higher in the male population of the third and fourth decades of life. Aneurysms on the ACA were most frequently occurred in both age groups and the outcome of aneurysmal SAH among the third and fourth decades was favorable. Multivariate analysis revealed that high Hunt-Hess grade was a risk factor for patient's outcome.

This study analyzed the effect of an unplugged educational program which focuses on the algorithm execution time analysis on enhancing the computational thinking of the third grade students. An unplugged educational program was developed by following the procedures of the ADDIE model based on the result of the demand analysis conducted with 70 incumbent elementary school teachers and 120 third grade students. The developed program was applied to 24 third grade students for 36 classes in six days and a comparison was made through pre-post comparison tests with 24 students who were taught with a board game program for the same period of time. As a result, the unplugged education program which focuses on the algorithm execution time analysis is deemed to have positive effect on the computational thinking of the third grade students.

In this study, an unplugged education method which focuses on the data visualization training was applied to third grade students of an elementary school and analyzed its impact on enhancing their computational thinking. The analysis was conducted on 60 elementary school teachers and 124 third grade students and the unplugged education program based on the data visualization procedure was developed. The education program developed was carried out with 24 third grade students for 36 hours over six days. The effect of the program applied was analyzed through the pre-to-post comparison performed with perceptive strength test and creativity test in order to examine the enhancement in computational thinking. According to the analysis result, the unplugged education method which focuses on the data visualization training has significant effect on the 'computational perception' and 'creativity' of third grade students.
The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of throwing motion in the elementary school students from the developmental point of view. For the purpose of this, total of nine subjects(each of three students in five, third, and first grades) were participated. They were asked to throw the ball as far as they can and the motions were videotaped with the 30frames/sec and 1/500 shutter speed. The successful motions for each subject were selected for three dimensional analysis. The collected data were analyzed using DV express 1.0 and Kwon3D 3.0 softwares. The results obtained from this study were as follows; 1. Total time for the throwing motion of the first grade was longer than that of the fifth and third grades. 2. The resultant displacement and velocity of COM for the fifth and third grades were greater than that of the frist grade. 3. The first grade tended to flex the trunk forward excessively during the throwing motion. 4. The fifth grade tended to place the upper arm close to the sagital plane and move the forearm and hand freely. 5. Looking at the greater variability of the angular velocity of the hand segment, the fifth grade seemed to have faster and more flexible movement of the wrist. 6. There were somewhat differences in the patterns and magnitudes of ground reaction forces among the different grades.
In this study, we conducted a comparative study to investigate the curriculums on electricity and magnetism between in Korean and in Ontario elementary schools in Canada with respect to connectivity and difference among course materials with grades. We compared textbooks that contain the contents about electricity and magnetism, and connectivity in curriculums that were relevant to the science content system in each country. We report the following differences in the curriculums on electricity and magnetism in each country. First, it turns out that science is taught from the first grade in Ontario, while it is taught from the third grade in Korea. Second, Ontario covers electricity and magnetism only in science curriculum, while Korea covers the same topics both in the science and practical arts curriculum. Third, while the curriculum in Korea introduces 'a magnet' in the third grade, 'electricity' in the fourth and the fifth grade, and 'an electromagnet' in the sixth grade, while the curriculum in Ontario covers the concept of energy from the first grade. As the grades go up, the contents of electricity and magnetism tend to be more deepen. It also emphasizes enhancing students' ability that they can communicate what they learn about technology with others, and that they can apply their knowledge to other fields as well. Based on this study of the Ontario curriculum, we suggest that it is necessary for us to n Science curriculum from the first grade, so that the students can learn science from the early grade, without a need to run another subject, like practical arts. We also found that the Korean curriculum has an interesting structure for the young students to learn to apply their knowledge to the real life immediately, based on an idea that the topic of 'Manipulating the electric appliances' in practical arts curriculum moves to the Science.
The purpose of this study is to guide and apply gettable and accessible materials around everyday life into classroom instruction, and to find out their effects on student academic achievement. In order to achieve it, this study was tried to develop and guide available materials around life in teaming activities, to provide a preliminary assignment that could apply the available materials, and to compare its academic achievement to one from field trip loaming. For the hypothesis testing, first, the experimental and comparing classes were selected based on the results of basic learning diagnostic evaluation, which conducted by the researcher being served as a full-time science teacher of the third and sixth grade of K elementary school in Kwangju for 2 years. Secondly, the instructional use of the available materials around life was applied to the experimental class. Also, the instructional use of the existing materials was applied to the comparing class. Finally, for the testing of the effects on academic achievement, the posterio test was implemented after conducting the experimental instruction in knowledge·understanding, inquiry process, and attitude domains classified by the unit characteristics. Using SPSS/WIN program the t-test was performed in order to compare the differences between the two groups. Major findings were as follows: 1) In the achievement test of knowledge·understanding domain, there were no significant differences at the 5% level between the experimental and comparing classes. It could be difficult to say, therefore, that the instructional use of the available materials around life was more effective than the instructional use of the existing materials. However, it had some effects on differences between the third grade final achievement test and sixth grade experimental class. 2) In the achievement test of inquiry process domain, there were some significant differences in that the sixth grade experimental class was higher than the third grade out-of classroom experience unit. It was indicated that the instructional use of the available materials around life had some effects on improving the students' inquiry ability 3) In achievement test of attitude domain, there were some significant differences. It was shown that the self-evaluation test of the sixth grade experimental class unit was higher than that of the third grade out-of classroom experience unit; Especially, the learning activities in the experimental class were more active, and the experimental practice ability was improved. It was presented that the instructional use of the available materials around life had some effects on the students' academic achievement in attitude domain. It was concluded from this study that the instructional use of the available materials around life was less effective on Knowledge understanding domain, but was effective on improving their scientific inquiry ability and interest on science education.

This study presents a descriptive statistical analysis on grade characteristics and employment rates of three ocean-related departments at a university. The ocean-related departments belong to the same college along with the other six departments. To obtain the correlation between the grade characteristics and employment rates, we carried out the followings. Firstly, four-year employment rates and six-semester GPAs (grade point averages) were obtained from the nine departments. Secondly, the box-and-whisker plots were constructed for each data set to capture the grade characteristics (mean, the first quartile, median, third quartile, whisker+, and Q3 box). Finally, the grade characteristics and employment rates were correlated. It is shown from the correlation analysis that the employment rate has a positive linear relation with the mean or third quartile, while the rate has a negative linear relation with the whisker+ or Q3 box, for the ocean-related departments possibly because these departments have higher regular employment rates than those of the other six departments.

The in situ observations and the seawater analyses were conducted at all seasons from July 1996 to April 1999 for the purpose of describing the characteristics of seasonal variations of water quality in Mokpo harbour, Korea. Vertical stratification started to be formed in water column in spring, developed in summer and disappeared in fall. In summer, vertical density distribution of water column was found to be in stable structure with lower temperature and higher salinity of bottom water, and the vertical mixing of water between surface and bottom layers was restricted. In winter, however, surface water was found to be similar to bottom water in temperature and salinity, and water column was in unstable structure and in well-mixed condition between surface and bottom waters. The saturation percentage of dissolved oxygen(DO) in bottom water of inner part of Mokpo harbour at all seasons was shown to be decreased to the third grade or under the third grade of Korean standards of seawater quality. In particular, dissolved oxygen was oversaturated in surface water and undersaturated in bottom water in summer, due to stratification and organic pollution. The difference of DO concentration between surface and bottom waters was found to be greater in spring and summer than in fall and winter, due to stratification and photosynthesis of phytoplankton. The concentrations of chemical oxygen demand(COD) over the entire waters of Mokpo harbour were found to fluctuate from below the third grade to the first grade of Korean standards through all seasons and COD concentrations of same seasons were shown to be different year after year. In particular, in view of COD, the annual average seawater quality of Mokpo harbour was evaluated to be in third grade of Korean standards, due to organic pollution. The average COD of surface water was greater than that of bottom water in spring and summer, due to the autochthonous COD caused by production of phytoplankton in surface waters, while the average COD of surface water was similar to that of bottom water in fall and winter, due to the vertical mixing of water between surface and bottom layers.
