  • The brake judder comes from non-uniformities in the tire/wheel assembly caused by mechanical effects such as a brake torque variation (BTV). A disc thickness variation (DTV) related with the kinematic behavior of the disc was investigated a main source of BTV. In this study, a dynamic model with brake corner assembly of full vehicle using MSC.ADAMS was correlated by experiment of judder phenomenon. Judder was generated and correlated systematically by judder experiment in chassis and brake dynamometer from variation in the thickness of the disc. Also it has been found a judder transfer path and variation of the braking pressure. Through analysis of transfer function and movement of subsystem caused by BTV generation, design parameters have been found. Based on the results obtained from parameter study of suspension module, the effective design process and developed model with brake corner assembly was suggested for vibration reduction of steering wheel caused by the judder phenomenon.

  • Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. In FGM layer, material properties are assumed to be varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The 3-D finite element model is adopted by using an IS-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties in the thickness direction. Numerical results are compared with those of the previous works. In addition, the displacements, the tensile stresses and the compressive stresses are analyzed for the variation of FGM thickness ratio and volume fraction distribution.Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. • This paper focuses on an analytical research on the critical buckling load of cylindrical shells with stepwise variable wall thickness under axial compression. An arctan function is established to describe the thickness variation along the axial direction of this kind of cylindrical shells accurately. By using the methods of separation of variables, small parameter perturbation and Fourier series expansion, analytical formulas of the critical buckling load of cylindrical shells with arbitrary axisymmetric thickness variation under axial compression are derived. The analysis is based on the thin shell theory. Analytic results show that the critical buckling load of the uniform shell with constant thickness obtained from this paper is identical with the classical solution. Two important cases of thickness variation pattern are also investigated with these analytical formulas and the results coincide well with those obtained from other authors. The cylindrical shells with stepwise variable wall thickness, which are widely used in actual engineering, are studied by this method and the analytical formulas of critical buckling load under axial compression are obtained. Furthermore, an example is presented to illustrate the effects of each strake's length and thickness on the critical buckling load.

  • The buckling capacity of the cylindrical shells depends on two geometric ratios of L/R and R/t. However the effect of thickness variation on the behavior of the shells is more complicated and the buckling strength of them is sensitive to the magnitude and shape of geometric imperfections. In this paper the effects of thickness variation and geometric imperfections on the buckling and postbuckling behavior of cylindrical shells are experimentally investigated. The obtained results are presented under the effect of uniform lateral pressure. It is found in this investigation that the buckling mode can be generated in the whole length of the shell, if the thickness variation is low.

  • The study is to investigate the free vibration of antisymmetric angle-ply conical shells having non-uniform sinusoidal thickness variation. The arbitrarily varying thickness is considered in the axial direction of the shell. The vibrational behavior of shear deformable conical shells is analyzed for three different support conditions. The coupled differential equations in terms displacement and rotational functions are obtained. These displacement and rotational functions are invariantly approximated using cubic spline. A generalized eigenvalue problem is obtained and solved numerically for an eigenfrequency parameter and an associated eigenvector of spline coefficients. The vibration characteristic of the shells is examined for cone angle, aspect ratio, sinusoidal thickness variation, layer number, stacking sequence, and boundary conditions.

  • This study is to investigate the behavior of fatigue crack growth with ATOS 55 steel which can be applied to the commercial car Dump Frame. It is to obtain the material coefficients after tensile and fatigue crack growth test with the variation of thickness or heat treatment. Also, that is proved the Pari's law by experiment. The summarized results are as follows ; 1) Increasing thickness, tensile and yield strength measured highly regardless to heat treatment and measured lowly as variation of heat treatment temperature. 2) Specimen of thickness 8.0㎜ measured the faster of crack growth rate than another thickness according to the results of experiment. It was the different of stress conditions in crack tip. 3) It was found that the experimental constant m was range of 2∼5 to the relationship between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range. Also, it was to prove the Paris's law by the experiment.

  • Film insert melding is one of the surface processes that enhances functional or aesthetic qualities of an existing product's surface. In general, film insert molding consists of three processes including thermoforming, trimming and injection molding. Thermoforming, which is the first process of film insert molding, is the most important process because the variation of film thickness has an effect on the mold design and process conditions for the subsequent processes, that are, trimming and injection molding. This study is focused on predicting the film thickness distribution through film insert thermoforming process using commercial FEM code. In order to describe rheological behavior of thermoplastic film (ABS), G'Sell's viscoelastic constitutive law was adopted. The numerical model of film insert thermoforming was established, and the simulation to predict film thickness distribution was performed. Comparison between the results of simulation and experiment was made to validate the proposed finite element analysis.

  • A disturbance rejection controller using eccentricity filtering and LQ control techniques is proposed to alleviate the effecto of major roll eccentricity in multivariable cold-rolling processes. Fundamental problems in multivariable cold-rolling processes such as process time delay inherent in exit thickness measurement and non-stationary characteristics of roll eccentricity signals can be overcome by the proposed control method. The filtered instantaneous estimate of roll eccentricity may be exploited to improve instantaneous estimate of the exit thickness variation based on roll force and roll gap measurements, and a feedforward compensator is augmented as a reference for a gaugemeter thickness estimator. LQ feedback controller is combined with eccentricity filter for the attenuation of the exit thickness variation due to the entry thickness variation. The simulation results show that the roll eccentricity disturbance is significantly eliminated and other disturbances also are attenuated.

  • The surface evenness and texture are closely related with the irregularity of yam thickness. Besides, yam thickness variation has an important role to influence the yam performance and the textile process efficiency. Thus, the information not only on the yam thickness, but also on the short- term irregular characteristics that have not been known before is required for enhancing the qualities of textile products. This paper reports the results of a study about the yam thickness and its variation for various types of yam on the basis of a new measurement system applying a laser slit beam as a light source. The new method delivers effective information on the irregularity. The analysis of the measured signal confirms that the visual shade created by the yam doubling and twisting can be measured and the yam thickness characteristics can be represented by correlograms. Depending on yam types, correlograms have different shapes and can be approximated to an exponentially decaying function with or without fluctuating magnitude. In addition, the effective information on the yam irregularity can be influenced by the sampling length interval of the measuring device used for tests.
