  • As the size of containership increased over 14,000TEU, thick steel plate with high strength has been used. The plate thickness increased over 70mm and yield strength of the steel plate was around $47kg_f/mm^2$. Many researchers reported that the thick welded plate has low crack arrest toughness. They noticed the crack arrest ability is dependent on the plate thickness. In other words, brittle crack propagates straightly along the welded line and make abrupt fracture in the thick plate which causes low $K_{ca}$. In this study, the other factors, especially welding heat input, to cause low crack arrest toughness was investigated for thick steel plate welds. EH grade steel plates were used in this study and 50 to 80 thick plates were tested to confirm thickness sensitivity. Electro gas welding (EGW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) were adopted to prepare the welded joints. Temperature gradient ESSO test was performed to measure $K_{ca}$ values with the variation of welding variables. As a result of this study, regardless of plate thickness, welding heat input to cause welding residual stress around crack path is a key factor to control the brittle crack propagation in welded joints.

  • Thick steel plate is commonly found with mega steel structures but its properties have not been fully explored. Grade Q345GJ-C steel plate with thickness ranging from 60 mm to 120 mm are studied in this paper. Both the static and cyclic performance of material in different directions (horizontal and through-thickness directions) and locations (outer surface, 1/4 thickness and mid-depth) are experimentally obtained. The accumulative damage during cyclic loading is also calculated by using bilinear mixed hardening (BMH) constitutive relationship together with the Lemaitre's damage model. Results show that the static properties are better at the outer surface of thick steel plates than those at mid-depth. Properties in through-thickness direction are similar to those at mid-depth in the horizontal direction. The cyclic performance at different locations of a given plate is similar within the range of strain amplitude studied. However, when damage parameters identified from monotonic tensile tests are included in the numerical simulation of cyclic loading tests, damage is found accumulating faster at mid-depth than close to outer surface.

  • The Plasma Arc Cutting Method using high density and hight temperature beam is well applicable to the cutting of the nonferrous metal (Al alloy ) and stainless steel which are unable to be cut by the use of the oxy-fuel gas. This study focalizes on the cutting phenomena of the plate of (mm) thickness, since the cutting phenomena of thick plates have been rather thoroughly studied. In this study the cutting groove, adhesive phenomena of dross, surface roughness were measured according to the variation of cutting speed and compared with the case of mild steel plates. The result showed that the kerf width variation of Al alloy was similar to the case of mild steel, while that of the stainless steel differed from the mild steel. In the adhesive phenomena of dross, 6(mm) thick plates of Al alloy showed a difference from those of thick plates, but the stainless steel was similar to thick plates. The surface roughness variation of Al alloy wias minimum at 67 cm/min, while that of stainless steel was at 30cm/min.

  • In recent time there are vigorous requirement for the use of thick steel plate in various industrial fields including shipbuilding industry. Application of TMCP steel plates, especially, is increase progressively. As a welding process for thick steel plate assembly high heat input welding method is used. However, HAZ softening of TMCP steel plates has a possibility to reduce the strength of welded joint. In this study, therefore, tensile strength of TMCP welds had softened HAZ was examined using numerical calculation and experiment.

  • Recently, there have been the increase of ship size and the development of oil and gas in arctic region. These trends have led to the requirements such as high strength, good toughness at low temperature and good weldability for prevent of brittle fracture at service temperature. There has been the key issue of crack arrestability in large size structure such as container ship. In this report for the first time, crack arrest toughness of thick steel plate welds was evaluated by large scale ESSO test for estimate of brittle crack arrestability in thick steel plate. For large structures using thick steel plates, fracture toughness of welded joint is an important factor to obtain structural integrity. In general, there are two kinds of design concepts based on fracture toughness: crack initiation and crack arrest. So far, when steel structures such as buildings, bridges and ships were manufactured using thick steel plates (max. 80~100mm in thickness), they had to be designed in order to avoid crack initiation, especially in welded joint. However, crack arrest design has been considered as a second line of defense and applied to limited industries like pipelines and nuclear power plants. Although welded joint is the weakest part to brittle fracture, there are few results to investigate crack arrest toughness of welded joint. In this study, brittle crack arrest designs were developed for hatch side coaming of large container ships using arrest weld, hole, and insert technology.

  • Automation of inventory management in a steel plate factory was a difficult problem unresolved for a long time. And now, it is also necessary to work diligently in the steel industry on efficient inventory management of thick plates. So far, the environmental characteristics of stacked thick plates means it is not easy to apply advanced technology for their automatic identification. In this paper, we propose a thick-plate robotic scanning system based on radio-frequency identification (RFID) that can provide quick and accurate inventory management by acquiring plate information after the scanning automatically recognizes the RFID tags under difficult load conditions. This system is equipped with a crane to move the plates in a pulled-up operation. It is equipped with a plate-only linear dipole antenna only for scanning the position of the plate tag. Only the linear dipole antenna, while moving the x-axis and y-axis information, automatically identifies the tag information attached to the plate. The tag information acquired by the system is used for stockpiling and is managed by steel plate inventory control software. The effectiveness of the proposed system is verified through field performance evaluation. As a result, the recognition rate of the plate tags is 99.9% at a maximum distance of 320 cm. The developed thick-plate antenna showed excellent performance compared to an existing commercial antenna.

  • Induction heating has been applied to the preheating process in various industrial fields. It has been used as a simple device structure, limiting the heating zone through controlled variables, and free-welding positions. It would be helpful to weld thick plates with arc welding such as GMAW. The induction heating process is well suited to this process. In this study, in order to find suitable induction heating parameters, a simulation was conducted with multi physics S/W. Three kinds of material were heated by induction coils designed specially for thick plate. Consequently, steel and nimonic alloy were the most efficient materials for preheating by induction. It can be concluded that the induction heating process is a good method for preheating the thick plate.
