Electron beam weldability was investigated for 1mm thick cold rolled sheets of commercially pure grade titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Accelerating voltage of 40kV, beam current of 6mA, and weld speed of 0.8m/min was used and focal position of focused electron beam was just on the surface of workpiece. Microstructure of weld metal, the heat affected zone and base metal was observed using optical microscope. Vickers hardness was measured across the welds and the transverse tensile test was carried out. Hydroformability test was also carried out for the butt welded coupons of commercially pure grade titanium. For the electron beam welded C P Ti, the average grain size was equiaxed $\alpha(15{\sim}25{\mu}m)$ for base metal, coarse equiaxed $\alpha(80{\sim}200{\mu}m)$ for weld metal and annealed and enlarged grain($40{\sim}120{\mu}m$) for the HAZ. The vickers hardness of C P Ti was $180{\sim}200Hv$ for base metal, and $160{\sim}180Hv$ for the weld metal and the HAZ. For the electron beam welded Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the vickers hardness was 360Hv for the base metal, abd $400{\sim}425Hv$ for the weld metal and the HAZ. All the failure occurred at the base metal, when the transverse weld tensile test was carried out for both electron beam welded C P Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The formability of electron beam welded C P Ti was decreased compared with that of C P Ti base alloy.
The 2 GeV electron linac, the injector of the Pohang Light Source, was used as a photo-neutron source for radiation shielding research. The operational beam parameters are the nominal electron intensity of $0.5\;{\sim}5\;nC/sec$, the repetition rate of 10 Hz, and the beam pulse length of 1.0 nsec. One electron beam line was modified in order to install the target systems for producing pulsed photo-neutrons. The neutron spectrum and intensity were investigated by the time-of-flight technique. The reliable maximum energy of the measured neutrons was about 500 MeV. The number of neutrons above 20 MeV produced by one 1 GeV electron in a thick Pb target was about $6.45{\times}10^{-4}/sr$ at 90 degrees to the beam axis. The status of the photo-neutron source and the application research are presented.
Electron contamination due to the interaction between radiation beam and material was analyzed for the factors such as source-skin distance (SSD), field size, tray characteristics and position of filter, which can affect the surface dose in Cobalt teletherapy. Surface dose in open beam was more influenced by SSD with increasing field size. Relative surface charge (RSC) increased with the use of tray (solid, circular hole, slotted), compared with open beam, which is thought to be due to increased electron contamination of the tray. To reduce the surface dose, 0.4mm thick Lipowitz metal filter was used. Compared with open beam, RSC decreased by 8.8%, 11.3%, 13.3%, 16.6%, 19.3% and 21.7% for the field size of $5{\times}5$, $10{\times}10$, $15{\times}15$, $20{\times}20$, $25{\times}25$ and $30{\times}30cm^2$, respectively. On the contrary, use of Lipowitz metal filter increased RSC at 60cm or less SSD. Surface dose was effectively reduced with Lpowitz metal filter placed right below solid tray in Cobalt teletherapy.

In this work, a novel first-order shear deformation beam theory is applied to explore the vibration and buckling characteristics of thick functionally graded beams. The material properties are assumed to vary across the thickness direction in a graded form and are estimated by a power-law model. A Fourier series-based solution procedure is implemented to solve the governing equation derived from Hamilton's principle. The obtained results of natural frequencies and buckling loads of functionally graded beam are checked with those supplied in the literature and demonstrate good achievement. Influences of several parameters such as power law index, beam geometrical parameters, modulus ratio and axial load on dynamic and buckling behaviors of FGP beams are all discussed.
In this study, we developed a neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) measurement system for a 1.7-MV tandem proton accelerator with a target covered with 300-nm-thick lithium (Li) layer. With implementation of beam chopping module after its ion source, the accelerator is configured to operate in pulsed-beam mode with a pulse width <50 ns at 20-kHz repetition rate. This enables the gamma flash-type nTOF measurement system to identify the neutron generated with 3-MeV proton beam energy. The nTOF system consists of a 30" cylindrical NaI(Tl) and four stilbene scintillation detectors. The NaI(Tl) scintillator is placed 50 cm from the Li target to measure the time of beam irradiation on the target, and the stilbene detectors are placed 2 and 2.4 m away to measure nTOF at each location. The nTOF system successfully measured the generated neutron energy at irradiated proton energies of 2.6 and 3.0 MeV with an average energy resolution of 15%.
Background: Concrete activation in cyclotron vaults is a major concern associated with their decommissioning because a considerable amount of activated concrete is generated by secondary neutrons during the operation of cyclotrons. Reducing the amount of activated concrete is important because of the high cost associated with radioactive waste management. This study aims to investigate the capability of the neutron absorbing materials to reduce concrete activation. Materials and Methods: The Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) code was used to simulate a cyclotron target and room. The dimensions of the room were 457 cm (length), 470 cm (width), and 320 cm (height). Gd2O3, B4C, polyethylene (PE), and borated (5 wt% natB) PE with thicknesses of 5, 10, and 15 cm and their different combinations were selected as neutron absorbing materials. They were placed on the concrete walls to determine their effects on thermal neutrons. Thin B4C and Gd2O3 were placed between the concrete wall and additional PE shield separately to decrease the required thickness of the additional shield, and the thermal neutron flux at certain depths inside the concrete was calculated for each condition. Subsequently, the optimum combination was determined with respect to radioactive waste reduction, price, and availability, and the total reduced radioactive concrete waste was estimated. Results and Discussion: In the specific conditions considered in this study, the front wall with respect to the proton beam contained radioactive waste with a depth of up to 64 cm without any additional shield. A single layer of additional shield was inefficient because a thick shield was required. Two-layer combinations comprising 0.1- or 0.4-cm-thick B4C or Gd2O3 behind 10 cm-thick PE were studied to verify whether the appropriate thickness of the additional shield could be maintained. The number of transmitted thermal neutrons reduced to 30% in case of 0.1 cm-thick Gd2O3+10 cm-thick PE or 0.1 cm-thick B4C+10 cm-thick PE. Thus, the thickness of the radioactive waste in the front wall was reduced from 64 to 48 cm. Conclusion: Based on price and availability, the combination of the 10 cm-thick PE+0.1 cmthick B4C was reasonable and could effectively reduce the number of thermal neutrons. The amount of radioactive concrete waste was reduced by factor of two when considering whole concrete walls of the PET cyclotron vault.
The slim-floor solution provides an efficient alternative to the classic slab-over-beam configuration due to architectural and structural benefits. Two deficiencies can be identified in the current state-of-art: (i) the technique is limited to nonseismic applications and (ii) the lack of information on moment-resisting slim-floor beam-to-column joints. In the seismic design of framed structures, continuous beam-to-column joints are required for plastic hinges to form at the ends of the beams. The present paper proposes a slim-floor technical solution capable of expanding the current application of slim-floor joints to seismic-resistant composite construction. The proposed solution relies on a moment-resisting connection with a thick end-plate and large-diameter bolts, which are used to fulfill the required strength and stiffness characteristics of continuous connections, while maintaining a reduced height of the configuration. Considering the proposed novel solution and the variety of parameters that could affect the behavior of the joint, experimental and numerical validations are compulsory. Consequently, the current paper presents the experimental and numerical investigation of two slim-floor beam-to-column joint assemblies. The results are discussed in terms of moment-rotation curves, available rotational capacity and failure modes. The study focuses on developing reliable slim-floor beam joints that are applicable to steel building frame structures located in seismic regions.

The Formulation of a new Hermite straight beam element to eliminate the shear locking is presented. All the kinematic variables in Timoshenko beam are reinterpreted by the consideration of equilibrium equations together. It shows that when the modified transverse displacement field is used the Timoshenko beam looks apparently the same as the Euler beam. The element is formulated for the modified transverse displacement field to have the same interpolation scheme as that in the Hermite element. Transformation Matrix which relates a modified nodal vector with nonmodified one is also introduced to deal with general boundary conditions. Several examples are demonstrated and discussed for the purpose of verification of the concepts employed. The solutions obtained reveal that the element describes of the beam quite correctly, showing no locking and that it is also applicable to the analysis of both thin and thick beams.
Electron tomography (ET) of biological specimens is performed from a series of images obtained over a range of tilt angles in a transmission electron microscope. When using the high voltage electron microscope (HVEM), various noises appear in EM images acquired from thick sections by high voltage electron beam. In order to obtain an adequate result in electron tomograms that allow visualization of rather complex and mega-cellular structure such as brain tissue, it is necessary to remove the noise in each original tilt images of thick section. Using band-pass filtering of original tilt images, the filtered images are obtained and used to assemble a reconstructed tomogram. The qualified 3D tomogram from filtered images results in a considerable reduction of the noises compared to conventional tomogram. In conclusion, this study suggests that band-pass filtering is effective to improve the brightness and intensity of HVEM produced tomograms acquired from micron-thick sections of biological specimens.
In this paper, we present p-channel GaAs MOSFET having $Al_2O_3$ as gate insulator fabricated on a semi-insulating GaAs substrate, which can be operated in the depletion mode. $1\;{\mu}m$ thick undoped GaAs buffer layer, $4000\;{\AA}$ thick p-type GaAs epi-layer, undoped $500{\AA}$ thick AlAs layer, and $50\;{\AA}$ thick GaAs cap layer were subsequently grown by molecular beam epitaxy(MBE) on (100) oriented semi-insulating GaAs substrate and this wafer was oxidized. AlAs layer was fully oxidized as a $Al_2O_3$ thin film. The I-V, $g_m$, breakdown charateristics of the fabricated GaAs MOSFET showed that wet thermal oxidation of AlAs/GaAs epilayer/S I GaAs was successful in realizing depletion mode p-channel GaAs MOSFET.
