  • 2G HTS wire with high engineering current density is desired for applications where compact, high power density superconducting equipment is important. We have succeeded in enhancing engineering current density of commercial SuperOx 2G HTS wire based on GdBCO by increasing the HTS layer thickness without fast degradation of the HTS film microstructure. This was possible after improving the temperature uniformity along the HTS film deposition zone. In particular, the wire engineering current density was increased from 700-770 A/㎟ (for a 65 ㎛-thick wire without stabilisation) or 430-480 A/㎟ (for a 105 ㎛-thick stabilised wire) at the beginning of this study to almost 1200 A/㎟ (for a 67 ㎛-thick wire without stabilisation) or 770 A/㎟ (for a 107 ㎛-thick stabilised wire) at completion of this study.

  • The superconductor characteristics of BSCCO spray films by Heat treatment was studied. $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_x$(Bi-2212) is high-Tc superconductor(HTS) coatings have been prepared by Heat treatment. Where high current carrying capabilities are required and therefore thick film and bulk material are called for, the Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8-d(Bi-2212)compound has evoleved as one of the most promising. and the Bi-2212 HTS coating layer is synthesized through the peritectic reaction between Sr-Ca-Cu oxide coating layer and Bi-Cu oxide coating layer by partial melting process. The superconducting characteristics depends on the spray distance which was related to the spray particle melt. The Bi-2212 HTS layer consists of the whisker growth and secondary phase in 2212 layer were observed.

  • $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{x}$(Bi-2212) and $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}$(Bi-2223) high-$T_{c}$ superconductor(HTS) coating have been prepared by plasma spraying and heaat treatment. The Bi-2212 HTS coating later is synthesized through the peritectic reaction between Sr-Ca-Cu oxide coating layer and Bi-Cu oxide coating later, and $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{y}$(Bi-2212) superconducting phase grow by partial melting process. The superconducting characteristic depends strongly on the conditions of the partial melting process. the Bi-2212 HTS layer consists of the whiskers grown in the diffusion direction. Above the 2212 layer, Bi-2223 phase and secondary phase was observed. The secondary phase is distributed uniformly over the whole surface. This is caused to the microcrack on the coatings surface. Despite everything, the film shows superconducting with an onset $T_{c}$ of about 115K. There are two changes steps. One changes (1step) at 115K is due to the diamagnetism of the Bi-2223 phase and the other changes (2step) at 78K is due to the diamagnetism of the Bi-2212 phase.

  • In order to develop a high temperature superconducting(HTS) coil for the fault current limiter(FCL), the over-current characteristics in YBCO coated conductor(CC) with Ni-W alloy substrate are analyzed. The HTS wire is wound by bifilar winding method for resistive current limitation and it is operated in 65K sub-cooled nitrogen. In order to analyze the resistance and the temperature characteristics of the CC wire, an analysis program is developed considering all the composition materials except the buffer layer. Using this program, the temperature rise, the resistance development and the current limitation of CC are calculated depending on the applied voltage and the stabilizer materials. According to the analysis results, under the temperature restriction of 300K, the maximum voltage per meter is determined as 40V/m if the stabilizer is $25{\mu}m$ thick stainless steel at each side. Finally, the wire length needed for the distribution level HTS FCL is estimated.

  • We performed a continuous heat treatment experiment for long Si$_2$Sr$_2$CaCuO$_{x}$ (Bi2212) superconductor tapes on copper substrates. A precursor that contains a mixture of Bi$_2$O$_3$, SrCO$_3$, and CaCO$_3$ powders was prepared and screen-printed on Cu tapes. The screen- printed tapes were thermally treated by consecutive processes with various temperature settings using an air-filled tube furnace. The diffraction patterns and the microstructures of the high temperature superconductor thick films were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and optical Microscopy respectively, and the critical temperatures of the superconducting thick films were measured. The critical temperatures of the superconducting films were measured to be about 77K, and the films'crystallographic c-axes were confirmed to be normal to the film surfaces by XRD and morphology observation. We also observed that the thick superconducting layer is formed and aligned on the copper substrate via partial melted state that consists of a liquid phase and a secondary phase.e.

  • While critical properties of BSCCO wires rely considerably on grid direction upon BSCCO and have very complicated mechanism of generating a superconducting phase, making it difficult to improve properties of wires, YBCO thin-film wires which can be formed in a superconducting phase upon metal board through vapor deposition processing can get excellent direction and reduce manufacturing costs with more flexibility in improving critical properties; thus, they will be suitable for instrument application in the future. Contrary to BSCCO wires for which thick silver alloy covering materials should inevitably be used, moreover, YBCO thin-film wires have an advantage of making thickness and quality of covering materials different by usage. Such a property can be an important element to widen application of wires by presenting possibility of using thin-film wires as superconducting material for fault current limiter as well as for high power current application. In this study we intend to prepare YBCO thin-film wires with different stabilizer layers to analyze current application and current restriction properties by stabilizer layers on the basis of detailed researches on changes in current classification properties below critical value.

  • The fundamental mechanical characteristics under tensile and bending deformations of hermetically-sealed reinforced Bi-2223 tape and CTOP processed Bi-2223 tape were examined at 77K. Also, the Tensile strain dependence of the critical current, $I_c$, was obtained at 77K and self-field. The reinforced hermetic tape showed higher tensile strength and a better Tensile strain tolerance than the CTOP processed tape. For bending tests, a rho-shaped sample holder was used giving multiple bending strains. in increasing order. In the same case under bending deformation, the hermetic tape showed a higher bending strain tolerance than the CTOP processed tape. This higher strength of the hermetic tape can be attributed to the thick hardened copper reinforcement layer.
