Holographic interferornetric tomography can provide reconstruction of instantaneous three dimensional gross flow fields. The technique however confronts ill-posed reconstruction problems in practical applications. Experimental data are usually limited in projection and angular scanning when a field is captured instantaneously or under the obstruction of test models and test section enclosures. An algorithm, based on a series expansion method, has been developed to improve the reconstruction under the ill-posed conditions. A three-dimensional natural convection flow around two interacting isothermal cubes is experimentally investigated. The flow can provide a challenging reconstruction problem and lend itself to accurate numerical solution for comparison. The refractive index fields at two horizontal sections of the thermal plume with and without an opaque object are reconstructed at a limited view angle of 80" The experimental reconstructions are then compared with those from numerical calculation and thermocouple thermometry. It confirms that the technique is applicable to reconstruction of reasonably complex, three-dimensional flow fields.elds.
We devised a method to control the temperature of a liquid bath as low as $-100^{\circ}C$ using the duty cycle control of a solenoid valve. The solenoid valve controls the flow of liquid nitrogen that we used as a cryogen in this system. By controlling the duty cycle of a solenoid valve using feedback from the measured temperature of the liquid bath, we were able to achieve temperature stability within ${\pm}19mK$ around $-100^{\circ}C$. We also demonstrated that by taking average values of the temperature readings for sequence of measurements from more than one thermometer, it is possible to use this system for the calibration of thermometers within 3 mK. This system and the control method can be used for the precise temperature control in the range between $0^{\circ}C$ and $-100^{\circ}C$, where commercially available precision baths are much expensive and hard to be built in customized configurations.
Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a new emerging neurosurgical procedure applied in a wide range of clinical fields. It can generate high-intensity energy at the focal zone in deep body areas without requiring incision of soft tissues. Although the effectiveness of the focused ultrasound technique had not been recognized because of the skull being a main barrier in the transmission of acoustic energy, the development of hemispheric distribution of ultrasound transducer phased arrays has solved this issue and enabled the performance of true transcranial procedures. Advanced imaging technologies such as magnetic resonance thermometry could enhance the safety of MRgFUS. The current clinical applications of MRgFUS in neurosurgery involve stereotactic ablative treatments for patients with essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depressive disorder, or neuropathic pain. Other potential treatment candidates being examined in ongoing clinical trials include brain tumors, Alzheimer's disease, and epilepsy, based on MRgFUS abilities of thermal ablation and opening the blood-brain barrier. With the development of ultrasound technology to overcome the limitations, MRgFUS is gradually expanding the therapeutic field for intractable neurological disorders and serving as a trail for a promising future in noninvasive and safe neurosurgical care.
In aerospace and energy engineering, the reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) temperature distributions is crucial. Traditional methods like algebraic iterative reconstruction and filtered back-projection depend on voxel division for resolution. Our algorithm, blending deep learning with computer graphics rendering, converts 2D projections into light rays for uniform sampling, using a fully connected neural network to depict the 3D temperature field. Although effective in capturing internal details, it demands multiple cameras for varied angle projections, increasing cost and computational needs. We assess the impact of camera number on reconstruction accuracy and efficiency, conducting butane-flame simulations with different camera setups (6 to 18 cameras). The results show improved accuracy with more cameras, with 12 cameras achieving optimal computational efficiency (1.263) and low error rates. Verification experiments with 9, 12, and 15 cameras, using thermocouples, confirm that the 12-camera setup as the best, balancing efficiency and accuracy. This offers a feasible, cost-effective solution for real-world applications like engine testing and environmental monitoring, improving accuracy and resource management in temperature measurement.
We report our development of the fabrication process of sub-micron scale $Al-AlO_x-Al$ tunnel junction by using electron-beam lithography and double-angle shadow evaporation technique. We used double-layer resist to construct a suspended bridge structure, and double-angle electron-beam evaporation to form a sub-micron scale overlapped junction. We adopted an e-beam insensitive resist as a bottom sacrificing layer. Tunnel barrier was formed by oxidation of the bottom aluminum layer between the bottom and top electrode deposition, which was done in a separate load-lock chamber. The junction resistance is designed and controlled to be 50 $\Omega$ to match the impedance of the transmission line. The junctions will be used in the broadband shot noise thermometry experiment, which will serve as a link between the electrical unit and the thermodynamic unit.
A room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) based on trihexyl (tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide ([$(C_6H_{13})_3P(C_{14}H_{29)}$] [TFSI];P66614TFSI) was synthesized and analyzed to determine their characteristics and properties. The bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion is widely studied as an ionic liquid (IL) forming anion which imparts many useful properties, notably electrochemical stability. Especially its electrochemical and physical characteristics for solvent of lithium ion battery were investigated in detail. $P_{66614}$ TFSI exhibits fairly low conductivity (0.89 mS $cm^{-1}$) and higher viscosity (298 K: 277 cP; 343 K: 39 cP) than other ionic liquids, but it exhibits a high thermal stability (over $400^{\circ}C$). Especially corrosion behavior on Al current collector was tested at room temperature and further it was confirmed that thermal resistivity for Al corrosion was highly increased in 1.0M LiTFSI/$P_{66614}$-TFSI electrolyte comparing with other RTILs by linear sweep thermometry.
We developed a 2-channel fiber-optic temperature sensor (FOTS) using a temperature sensing probe, a fiber-optic coupler, transmitting optical fiber, and an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). The temperature sensing probe is divided into a sensing probe and a reference probe for accurate thermometry. A sensing probe is composed of a silicon oil, a FC terminator, a brass pipe, and a singlemode optical fiber and the structure of a reference probe is identical with that of the sensing probe excluding a silicon oil. In this study, we measured the modified optical powers of the light signals reflected from the temperature sensing probe placed inside of the water with a thermal variation from 5 to $70^{\circ}C$. Although the optical power of the reference probe was constant regardless of the temperature change, the optical power of the sensing probe decreased linearly as the temperature increased. As experimental results, the FOTS using a subtraction method showed a small difference (i.e., hysteresis) in its response due to heating and cooling. The reversibility and reproducibility of the FOTS were also evaluated.
Most of reconstruction algorithms for the calculation of temperature distributions in CT (computed tomography)-TDLAS (tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy) are based upon two-line thermometry method. This method gives unstable calculation convergence due to signal noise, bias error, and signal mis-matches. In this study, a new reconstruction algorithm based on cross-correlation for temperature calculation is proposed. The patterns of the optical signals at all wave lengths were used to reconstruct the temperature distribution. Numerical test has been made using phantom temperature distributions. Using these phantom temperature data, absorption spectra for all wave lengths were constructed, and these spectra were regarded as the signals that would be obtained in an actual experiments. Using these virtually generated experimental signals, temperature distribution was once again reconstructed, and was compared with those of the original phantom data. Calculation errors obtained by the newly proposed algorithm were slightly large at high temperatures with small errors at low temperature.
A Fe-C eutectic cell for thermocouple calibration was manufactured and tested to investigate its phase transition characteristics in the thermocouple thermometry. It was observed that the freezing plateaus were strongly affected by the freeze-inducing temperature $T_{f}$. In case of the melting process, the melting plateau was influenced by the previous thermal history. As $T_{f}$. in the previous freezing was lower, the melting plateau became lower with a temperature dependence as small as $-0.0015^{\circ}C/^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it was found that the freeze-inducing temperature should be fixed to obtain a reproducible phase transition temperature in the melting. After fixing $T_{f}$, the melting process was examined and it was found that long and flat melting plateau was obtained within a reproducibility of about ${\pm}0.01^{\circ}C$. Based on the observed results, it was recommended that Fe-C eutectic temperature be best realized for the melting process with a melt-inducing temperature of $+3^{\circ}C$ above the expected liquidus temperature after freezing at $-5^{\circ}C$ below the solidus temperature.
Talc deposit of pipe-like form occurrs in the lower part of the Hyangsanri Dolomite with a strike of N40 -50 E and a dip of 40 -50 NW which is one formation of the Ogcheon Super Croup. The pipi-like ore body plunge at about $40^{\circ}$ to the west and are parallel to the lineation developed in the area. Structural formulae of tales occurred in this deposit are close to the ieal composition $Mg_6Si_8O_{20}(OH)_4$ showing limited deviation from ideal one. Substitution of Al for Si in tetrahedral site is of little or nothing ranging 0-0.04 and octahedral occupancy is close to six ranging 5.88-5.98 atoms per unit cell. Predominant octahedaral cation is Mg and proportion of divalent cations is generally over 97percent. Calcite -dolomite thermometry is obtained by determining the mol % $MgCO_3$using of EPMA and XRD methods. The peak metamorphic temperature can be estimated at $470{\pm}30^{\circ}C$ in the area whereas carbonates occurred at near talc ore show lower temperature than $400^{\circ}C$ that the calcite solvus limit is not well established. It indicates that the talc deposit was formed at the lower temperature that the metamorphic temperature. Cosequently, the formation of talc by metamorphism is questionable and the alteratin zone developed around the talc ore is very limited. The occurrence of talc ore in the dolomite as well as mineralogy, calcite-dolomite geothermometry, chlorite geothermometry, field and microscopic evidence suggest that siliceous ascending hydrothermal solution along the fracture is responsible for the formation of talc. It was considered that the slight fracturing of dolomite was formed by deformation prior to the mineralization.
