  • This paper is dedicated to the thermoelastic modeling and dynamic response of the rotating blades made of functionally graded ceramic-metal based materials. The blades modeled as non-uniform thin walled beams fixed at the hub with various selected values of setting angles and pre-twisted angles. In this study, the blade is rotating with a constant angular velocity and exposed to a steady temperature field as well as external excitation. Moreover, the effect of the temperature gradient through the blade thickness is considered. Material properties are graded in the thickness direction of the blade according to the volume fraction power law distribution. The numerical results highlight the effects of the volume fraction, temperature gradient, taper ratio, setting angle and pre-twisted angle on the dynamic response of bending-bending coupled beam characteristics are provided for the case of a biconvex cross section and pertinent conclusions are outlined.

  • In this study, the coupled effects of magnetic field, stress and thermal field on gravity waves propagating in a liquid layer over a solid surface are discussed. Due to change in temperature, initial hydrostatic stress and magnetic field, the gravity-sound Rayleigh waves can propagate in the liquid-solid interface. Dispersion properties of waves are derived by using classical dynamical theory of thermoelasticity. The phase velocity of gravity waves influenced quite remarkably in the presence of initial stress parameter, magneto-thermoelastic coupling parameter in the half space. Numerical solutions are also discussed for gravity-Rayleigh waves. In the absence of temperature, stress and magnetic field, the obtained results are in agreement with classical results.

  • This article presents a unified analytical solution for the analysis of thermal deformations and stresses in elastic annular disks with arbitrary cross-sections of continuously variable thickness. The annular disk is assumed to be under steady heat flow conditions, in which the inner surface of the annular disk is at an initial temperature and the outer surface at zero temperature. The governing second-order differential equation is derived from the basic equations of the thermal annular disks and solved with the aid of some hypergeometric functions. Numerical results for thermal stresses and displacement are given for various annular disks. These disks include annular disks of thickness profiles in the form of general parabolic and exponential functions. Additional annular disks with nonlinearly variable thickness and uniform thickness are also included.

  • This paper describes the characteristic of hinges on which a lever pivots within a limited angle due to the torque. The hinges are exerted by the thermally expanded actuators connected with a level through hinges. To enhance the stroke of inchworm actuator, FEM(Finite Element Method) was utilized for the characterization in view of stress displacement according to the variation of notch radius and notch width. As a result, notch width of the hinges plays an important part in improvement of micro inchworm actuator.

  • In this work, a novel three-dimensional model in the generalized thermoelasticity for a homogeneous an isotropic medium was investigated with diffusion, under the effect of thermal loading due to laser pulse in the context of Green-Lindsay theory was investigated. The normal mode analysis technique is used to solve the resulting non-dimensional equations of the problem. Numerical results for the displacement, the thermal stress, the strain, the temperature, the mass concentration, and the chemical potential distributions are represented graphically to display the effect of the thermal loading due to laser pulse and the relaxation time on the resulting quantities. Comparisons are made within the theory in the presence and absence of laser pulse.

  • In this study the thermal stress distribution and deformantion characteristics resulting from the nonuniform temperature fields of the cylinder block of a light 3-cylinder 4-stroke gasoline engine were analyzed using the 3-dimensional finite element method. The temperature distributions req-uisite for the thermoelastic behavior alalysis were obtained from the steady-state heat conduction analysis performed on the basis of experimental data. in order to examine the effect of a ceramic material the cylinder liner was replaced by the silicon nitride($Si_{3}N_{4}$) and its thermal behaviors were compared with those of the original block.

  • This paper presents the thermally induced hot spot characteristics of rubbing surface in the friction pad disk brake. During the braking period, the rubbing surface with irregular asperities that are strongly engaged in rough surface, wear, and deformed surface due to a friction heating may produce an irregular distorted geometry of the disk surface. The tribological interactions between the disk and the pads are unstable if the contact stress is severe, in which the irregularity develops the contact pressure distribution, leading eventually to localized contact, high temperature and formation of hot spots. The computed results of contact spots that are simulated using a coupled thermal-mechanical analysis present sinusoidal distortions and localized extrusions of the disk surface, which are strongly related to a hot spot in the practical disk brake.

  • This paper presents the effects of thermal environment and temperature-dependence of the material properties on axisymmetric bending of functionally graded (FG) circular and annular plates. The material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and graded in the thickness direction. In order to accurately evaluate the effect of thermal environment, the initial thermal stresses are obtained by solving the thermoelastic equilibrium equations. Governing equations and the related boundary conditions, which include the effects of initial thermal stresses, are derived using the virtual work principle based on the elasticity theory. The differential quadrature method (DQM) as an efficient and robust numerical tool is used to obtain the initial thermal stresses and response of the plate. Comparison studies with some available results for FG plates are performed. The influences of temperature rise, temperature-dependence of material properties, material graded index and different geometrical parameters are carried out.

  • The model of two-temperature magneto-thermoelasticity for a non-simple variable-thermal-conductivity infinitely-long solid cylinder is established. The present cylinder is made of an isotropic homogeneous thermoelastic material and its bounding plane is traction-free and subjected to a time-dependent temperature. An exact solution is firstly obtained in Laplace transform space to obtain the displacement, incremental temperature, and thermal stresses. The inversion of Laplace transforms has been carried out numerically since the response is of more interest in the transient state. A detailed analysis of the effects of phase-lags, an angular frequency of thermal vibration and the variability of thermal conductivity parameter on the field quantities is presented.
