This study was carried out to investigate the effect of thermo-mechanical treatment on the tensile properties of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-3Ni-3Si alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation. ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite, dislocation, stacking fault were formed, and grain size was refined by thermo-mechanical treatment. With the increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment, volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, dislocation, stacking fault were increased, and grain size decreased. In 5-cycle number thermo-mechanical treated specimens, more than 10% of the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite and less than 3% of the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite were attained. Tensile strength was increased and elongation was decreased with the increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment. Tensile properties of thermo-mechanical treated alloy with deformation induced martensite transformation was affected to formation of martensite by thermo-mechanical treatment, but was large affected to increasing of dislocation and grain refining.
The thermo-mechanical fatigue tests were performed on the specimens extracted from 1.5Cr-0. 67Mo-0.33V alloy. The characteristics of thermo-mechanical fatigue crack propagation were examined and reviewed in view of fracture mechanics. The results obtained from the present study are summarized as follows : (1) The propagation characteristics of isothermal low-cycle fatigue crack are dominated by .DELTA.J$_{f}$ in case of PP waveform, and .DELTA.J$_{c}$ in case of CP waveform. (II)The propagation characteristics of thermo-mechanical fatigue crack are dominated by .DELTA.J$_{c}$ for in-phase case, and by .DELTA.J$_{c}$ for out-of-phase. The present results were in good agreement with the equation of propagation law for isothermal low-cycle fatigue crack in case of thermo-mechanical fatigue.tigue.e.
This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between the mechanical properties and damping capacity of thermo-mechanical treated 316L stainless steel. Dislocations, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensites were formed by thermo-mechanical treatment, and the grain size was changed from micrometer to sub-micrometer by 5-cycled thermo-mechanical treatment. The volume fraction of dislocations, ${\varepsilon}$ and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensites was increased, and grain size of austenite increased and lengthened by the with increasing cycle number of thermo-mechanical treatment. In 5-cycled specimens, the volume fraction of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite was more than 25% and the less than 5% of volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$-martensite was attained. With increasing number of thermo-mechanical treatment, hardness, strength and damping capacity were increased, but elongation was decreased. Damping capacity was increased with increased hardness and strength, but decreased with increased elongation, and this result was the opposite tendency for general metal.
In this study, the effects of selecting water/silver nanofluid as both a coolant and a reactivity controller during the first operating cycle of a light water nuclear reactor are investigated. To achieve this, coupled neutronic-thermo-hydraulic analysis is employed to simulate the reactor core. A detailed VVER1000/446 reactor core is modeled in monte carlo code (MCNP), and the model is verified using the porous media approach. Results show that the maximum required level of silver nanoparticles is 1.3 Vol.% at the beginning of the cycle; this value drops to zero at the end of cycle. Due to substitution of water/boric acid with water/Ag nanofluid, reactor operation time at maximum power extends to 357.3 days, and the energy generation increases by about 27.3%. The higher negative coolant temperature coefficient of reactivity in the presence of nanofluid in comparison with the water/boric acid indicates that the reactor is inherently safer. Considering the safety margins in the presence of the nanofluid, minimum departure from nucleate boiling ratio is calculated to be 2.16 (recommendation is 1.75).
Fatigue behavior of the AH, DH and EH grade TMCP(Thermo-Mechanical Control Process) steels was studied. High cycle and low cycle fatigue tests were carried out for the weldment and base metal of each steel. The results showed that the fatigue limit at 2 * $10^6$ cycles was 33 to 37 kg/$mm^2$ for the base metal and 30 to 34 kg/$mm^2$ for the weldment. The ratio of fatigue limit to tensile strength for TMCP steels was 0.65 to 0.71, which was a value close to the upper limit for the ordinary steels. It was also found that the high cycle fatigue behavior of TMCP steels could be affected by the microstructures of base metal. It will be necessary to have fine structure for TMCP steels to increase the fatigue resistance. In low cycle fatigue test, the fatigue lifetime of AH and DH steels accorded well with the ASME best fit curve, while that of EH steel was considerably lower than the fatigue lifetime of the other steels. Fatigue resistance of the weldment made by high heat input(180kJ/cm) welding was not lower than that made by low heat input(80kJ/cm) welding in case of high cycle fatigue, but the high heat input welding decreased the fatigue resistance in case of low cycle fatigue.
Thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) behavior of heat resistant austenitic stainless steel was evaluated in the temperature range from 100$^{\circ}C$ to peak temperatures of 600 to 800$^{\circ}C$; The fatigue lives under TMF conditions were plotted against the plastic strain range and the dissipated energy per cycle. In the expression of the inelastic strain range versus fatigue life, the TMF data obtained at different temperature ranges were located close to a single line with a small deviation; however, when the dissipated energy per cycle, calculated from the area of the stress-strain hysteresis loops at the half of the fatigue life, was plotted against the fatigue life, the data showed greater scattering than the TMF life against the inelastic strain range. A noticeable stress relaxation in the stress-strain hysteresis curve took place at the peak temperatures higher than 700$^{\circ}C$, but all specimens in this study exhibited cyclic hardening behavior with TMF cycles. Recrystallization occurred during the TMF cycle concurrent with the formation of fine subgrains in the recrystallized region, which is considered to cause the cyclic hardening of the steel.
A gas turbine consists of an upstream compressor and a downstream turbine with a combustion chamber, and also the compressor and the turbine are generally coupled using a single shaft. Many casing bolts are used to assemble two horizontally separated casings, the gas turbine casing and the compressor casing, in both of axial and vertical directions. Because drilled holes for casing bolts in vertical direction are often too close to drilled holes for casing bolts in axial direction, one can observe cracks in the area frequently during operations of a gas turbine. In this study of the root cause analysis for the cracking initiating from the drilled holes of the casings of a gas turbine, the finite element analysis(FEA) was applied to evaluate the thermal and mechanical characteristics of the casings. By applying the field operation data recorded from combined cycle power plants for FEA, thermal and thermo-mechanical characteristics of a gas turbine are analyzed. The crack is initiated at the geometrical weak point, but it is found that the maximum stress is relieved when the same type of cracks is introduced on purpose during FEA. So, it is verified that the local fracture could be delayed by machining the same type of defects near the hole for casing flange bolts of the gas turbine, where the crack is initiated.
In this article, experimental training of the commercial available shape memory alloy fibre (SMA) fibre under the combined thermomechanical loading is reported. SMA has the ability to sense a small change in temperature (${\geq}10^{\circ}C$) and activated under the external loading and results in shape change. The thermomechanical characteristics of SMA at different temperature and mechanical loading are obtained through an own lab-scale experimental setup. The analysis is conducted for two types of the medium using the liquid nitrogen (cold cycle) and the hot water (heat cycle). The experimental data indicate that SMA act as a normal wire for Martensite phase and activated behavior i.e., regain the original shape during the Austenite phase only. To improve the confidence of such kind of behavior has been verified by inspecting the composition of the wire. The study reveals interesting conclusion i.e., while SMA deviates from the equiatomic structure or consist of foreign materials (carbon and oxygen) except nickel and titanium may affect the phase transformation temperature which shifted the activation phase temperature. Also, the grain structure distortion of SMA wire has been examined via the scanning electron microscope after the thermomechanical cycle loading and discussed in details.
