A simplified rotary heat-exchanger model was developed with an assumption of a linear temperature distribution along the flow direction. Based on the model, the exact fluid solution and solid temperature variations were obtained and verified from a comparison with previous numerical studies. The heat transfer in the rotary heat exchanger was investigated using the theoretical solutions. The heat exchanger's effectiveness was shown to be saturated, with a rotational-speed increase that is higher than a critical value that is solely dependent on the thermal capacity of the solid matrix but independent of the fluid flow rate; the saturated value of the effectiveness was determined only by the NTU of the heat exchanger. Where the thermal diffusivity of the solid matrix is so slight that the thermal penetration depth becomes smaller than the matrix thickness, the effective thermal capacity of the solid matrix decreased according to the penetration depth.

Cavitation in cryogenic fluids generates substantial thermal effects and strong variations in fluid properties, which in turn alter the cavity characteristics. In order to investigate the cavitation characteristics in cryogenic fluids, numerical simulations are conducted around an axisymmetric ogive in liquid nitrogen and hydrogen respectively. The modified Merkle cavitation model and energy equation which accounts for the influence of cavitation are used, and variable thermal properties of the fluid are updated with software. A good agreement between the numerical results and experimental data are obtained. The results show that vapor production in cavitation extracts the latent heat of evaporation from the surrounding liquid, which decreases the local temperature, and hence the local vapor pressure in the vicinity of cavity becomes lower. The cavitation characteristics in cryogenic fluids are obtained that the cavity seems frothy and the cavitation intense is lower. It is also found that when the fluid is operating close to its critical temperature, thermal effects of cavitation are more obviously in cryogenic fluids. The thermal effect on cavitation in liquid hydrogen is more distinctively compared with that in liquid nitrogen due to the changes of density ratio, vapour pressure gradient and other variable properties of the fluid.

There are numerous studies on relations between sleep and environmental factors such as noise, illumination and thermal conditions. Sleep is affected by the thermal environment. This study describes influence of thermal environment on skin temperature, sleep patterns and body movements using physiological and psychological measurements. The results are as follows: 1) The fluctuations of room temperature during sleep appeared skin temperature variations. The more room temperature is high, the more skin temperature is high in 22$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$, 30$^{\circ}C$. 2) A significant relation between body movement and skin temperature was found within room temperature. Under room temperature conditions of 22$^{\circ}C$, 26$^{\circ}C$, 30$^{\circ}C$, there were significantly higher rates of body movement in the room temperature(30$^{\circ}C$). 3) Uncomfortable after sleep in thermal environment is mostly under high temperature(30$^{\circ}C$), and they are about fatigue due to not enough sleeping. 4) The degree of indoor thermal temperature with sufficient sleeping is in 22.8 ∼ 27.8$^{\circ}C$.

Vertical and standing column well ground heat exchangers have mostly been installed for ground source heat pump systems (GSHP) and thermal response tests (TRT) have been applied to evaluate the thermal characteristics for these heat exchangers. In this paper, the TRT coupled with a line source method was applied to evaluate the thermal characteristics of the horizontal ground heat exchanger (HGHX). Load tests of a HGHX were also performed to examine the daily variations of the ground and fluid temperatures associated with the daily intermittent operation of GSHP. For this test, the straight HGHX (depth 2 m, length 50 m, 8 line) was installed in Ansan city. The results showed that the variations of ground thermal conductivity of HGHX during one year were relatively small with the range of $1.43{\sim}1.64W/m{\cdot}K$, and the maximum and minimum values appeared in December and May, respectively. Load tests with heat injection rate of 6.0 kW for 10 hours per day to HGHX during twelve days were performed in June, September and December, and resulted in a ground initial temperature rise of $4.31^{\circ}C$, $3.14^{\circ}C$, and $1.21^{\circ}C$ during these days, respectively.
In this study, the estimation of the temperature distribution of Jeju Island with coastal ocean derived from the thermal band of Landsat 7/ETM+ of January 6, 2003 was carried out. For the computation of the temperature of the island and the coastal ocean based on the thermal band, we used NASA method wiich is the 8 bit Digital Number(DN) converted into spectral radiance. The computed results showed that the land temperature variations were from 0 to 12 Celsius degrees, and a good agreement with the observation ones based on the method. However, the ocean surface temperature was not much changed ground 15 degree since the water was well mixed between the coastal and the offshore ocean. The interesting results were that the temperature distributions of the southern part(Seogwipo City) of Jeju Island were higher than those of the north one(Jeju City) by more than 2 Celsius degree at the same height although the distance between the Jeju and the Seogwipo is only about 35km in winter season. The reason was found that the solar irradiance intensity of the south part was stronger than the north one by Halla mountain in winter season only. From the results, we found that the seasonal variations of solar irradiation and the height of Mt. Halla were an important role of temperature distribution of Jeju Island.

In this paper, a thermal model is developed for the bus bar system to predict the temperature variation during the transient time period and to calculate both the steady-state and transient electrical current carrying capacity (ampacity) of bus bar. The bus bar system installed in the power house of Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore has been considered. Temperature variation predicted in the modelling is validated by observing the current and steady state temperatures in different feeders of the bus bar. Magnetic field of the extreme phases R and B induces more current in the middle phase Y. Hence, the steady state temperature in the phase Y is greater than other two phases. The transient capabilities of the bus bar are illustrated by calculating the variations in the bus bar temperature when it is subjected to a step change in current during the peak hours due to increase in hostel utilities and facilities (5.30 pm to 10.30 pm). The physical and geometrical properties of the bus bar and temperature variation in the bus bar are used to estimate the thermal time constants for common bus bar cross-sections. An analytical expression for the time constant of the bus bar is derived.
The damage of concrete due to the expansion of alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) and thermal-chemical reactions affecting the strength of concrete is studied. The empirical equations for the variations of expansion of AAR, compressive strength and degradation of the modulus of elasticity with time, and compressive strength with degradation of the modulus of elasticity are proposed by analysing numerous experimental data. It is revealed that the expansion of AAR and compressive strength increase with time. The proposed combination of the time variations of chemical and mechanical parameters provides a satisfactory prediction of the concrete strength. Seismic analysis of the aged Koyna dam is conceded for two different long-term experimental data of concrete incorporating the proposed AAR based properties. The responses of aged Koyna dam reveal that the crest displacement of the Koyna dam significantly increases with time while the contour plots show that major principal stress at neck level reduces with time. As the modulus of elasticity decreases with ages the stress generated in the concrete structure get reduces. On the other hand with lesser value of modulus of elasticity the structure becomes more flexible and the crest displacement becomes very high that cause the seismic safety of the dam reduce.
Structural modal parameters i.e. natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes are dynamic features obtained either by measuring the vibration responses of a structure or by means of finite elements models. Over the past two decades, modal parameters have been used to detect damage in structures by observing its variations over time. However, such variations can also be caused by environmental factors such as humidity, wind and, more importantly, temperature. In so doing, the use of modal parameters as damage indicators can be seriously compromised if these effects are not properly tackled. Many researchers around the world have found numerous methods to mitigate the influence of such environmental factors from modal parameters and many advanced damage indicators have been developed and proposed to improve the reliability of structural health monitoring. In this paper, several vibration tests are performed on a simply supported steel beam subjected to different damage scenarios and temperature conditions, aiming to describe the variation in modal parameters due to temperature changes. Moreover, four statistical methodologies are proposed to identify damage. Results show a slightly linear decrease in the modal parameters due to temperature increase, although it is not possible to establish an empirical equation to describe this tendency.
We observed the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of an acidic lake, Lake Katanuma, from 1998 to 2002 at weekly or biweekly intervals, except during the winter. This volcanic lake has a dimictic thermal pattern. In summer, the volcanic heat supply at the lake bottom results in weak thermal stratification. In 1998, 1999, and 2002, short-term holomixis was observed during the stratification period, when the anoxic, hydrogen sulfide-rich water from the hypolimnion spread across the entire lake. In contrast, distinct short-term holomixis did not occur during the stratificatlon period in 2000 and 2001. However, the early onset of the autumn turnover in August 2000 and 2001 caused anoxic conditions to persist throughout the entire water column for more than 2 weeks. The anoxic and hydrogen sulfide-rich conditions affected population densities of chironomid larvae (Chironomus acerbiphilus) and planktonic algae (Chlamydomonas acidophila), both dominant species in Lake Katanuma. Thus, the interannual variations of limnological characteristics influenced the seasonal population changes of these species.
The atmospheric and oceanic influences on the air-sea thermal interaction in the East Sea (Japan Sea) are studied by means of an analytic model which is based on the heat budget of the ocean. By means of the model, the model, the annual variations of heat fluxes and air temperatures in the East Sea are analytically simulated. The model shows that the back radiation, the latent heat and the sensible heat increase with the warn water advection. The latent heat increases with the sea surface temperature (SST) but the back radiation and the sensible heat dcrease as the SST increases. In the East Sea, an increase of mean SST by 1.0$^{\circ}C$ yields an increase of mean air temperature by 1.2$^{\circ}C$. The heat storage in the ocean plays an important role in the annual variations of heat flux across the sea surface.
