This paper studies thermal characteristics of a mix of CPU-intensive and memory-intensive application workloads on a multi-core processor. Especially, we focus on thermal variations during program execution because thermal variations are more critical than average temperatures and their ranges for thermal management. New metrics are proposed to quantify such thermal variations for a workload. We study the thermal variations using SPEC CPU2006 benchmarks with varying cooling conditions and frequencies on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The results show that applications have distinct thermal variations characteristics. Such variations are affected by cooling conditions, operating frequencies and multiprogramming workload. Also, there are distinct spatial thermal variations between cores. Our new metrics and their results from this study provide useful insight for future research on multi-core thermal management.
Laser speckle patterns were used to monitor variations of thermal voltages of a cathode during a battery discharge. Discharge voltages measured with an oscilloscope were utilized as a figure of merit of thermal voltages in Zn metal. Using an optical imaging system, speckle patterns were taken for zinc metal surface over a time period of 3 minutes. Pixel sum distribution functions (PSDFs) were extracted from speckle patterns. Accumulated pixel sums quantified from PSDFs over an optimized grayscale range strongly correlated with discharge voltages. This suggested that dark matter or particles may have the capability of both absorbing and radiating thermal energies simultaneously. The black body-like properties were able to be validated by identifying coincidences with distinct features of a black body spectrum. The pixels belonging to the grayscale range were confirmed to represent dark matter of a speckle pattern. It was clear that dark matter was part of surface plasmon carriers. The proposed sensing system can be applied to monitor thermal energy variations in any material.
The growth and extent of the local pressure field at any point is of primary importance as it supplies the driving force for the local wind circulation which causes a medium-range transport of air pollutants. The local pressure field is produced by the variation of temperature in the lower layers of the atmosphere, and is called the thermal wave. The thermal wave is influenced by the difference in the diurnal variations between two regions with different surface condition, for example land and sea. This difference produces the land- and sea-breeze phenomenon, and brings corresponding variations in the form of the thermal wave. Daytime temperature over the inland area (Daegu) was higher than that of the coastal area (Busan). The temperature difference reached about 5~6$^{\circ}C$ in the late afternoon(30-31 May 1999). The low pressure system of Daegu was most fully developed at the time. In this study, we investigated the possibility of thermal low onset around Daegu in summer with an analytical model. The topography effect was neglected in the model. We could predict a thermal low-pressure of about 3.4hPa at Daegu with wide flat land surface, when the inland area is about 6K warmer than the coastal area temperature. The pressure decrease is somewhat less than the observed value(4~5 hPa).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify through infrared thermal imaging technology the facial surface temperature (FST) of laying hens in response to the variations in their thermal environment, and to identify the regional differences in FST to determine the most stable and reliable facial regions for monitoring of thermoregulatory status in chickens. Methods: Thirty Hy-Line Brown hens (25-week-old) were sequentially exposed to three different thermal conditions; optimal (OT, 22℃±2℃), low (LT, 10℃±4℃), and high temperature (HT, 30℃±2℃). The mean values of FST in five facial regions including around the eyes, earlobes, wattles, beak and nose, and comb were recorded through infrared thermography. The maximum FST (MFST) was also identified among the five face-selective regions, and its relationship with temperature-humidity index (THI) was established to identify the range of MFST in response to the variations in their thermal environment. Results: Hens exposed to OT condition at 15:00 displayed a higher temperature at wattles and around the eyes compared to other regions (p<0.001). However, under LT condition at 05:00 to 08:00, around the eyes surface temperature showed the highest value (p<0.01). In HT, wattles temperature tended to show the highest temperature over almost time intervals. Main distribution regions of MFST were wattles (63.3%) and around the eyes (16.7%) in OT, around the eyes (50%) in LT, and wattles (62.2%) and comb (18.3%) in HT. The regression equation between MFST and THI was estimated as MFST = 35.37+0.2383×THI (R2 = 0.44; p<0.001). Conclusion: The FST and the frequency of MFST in each facial region of laying hens responded sensitively to the variations in the thermal environment. The findings of this experiment provide useful information about the effect of the thermal conditions on the specific facial regions, thus offering an opportunity to stress and welfare assessment in poultry research and industry.
This paper suggests design methodology for thermal infrared data correction algorithms considering environmental temperature variations. First, a thermal infrared measurement model is suggested by a parameter-dependent first-order input-output equation using the relationship between infrared measurement data and model environmental parameters. In order to compensate the influence of environmental temperatures on infrared data, a compensation function is identified. Through experiments, the proposed algorithm is shown to reduce the influence of environmental temperatures on the infrared data effectively.
This research deals with the behavior of Composite Box Girder Bridges (CBGBs) subjected to environmental effects such as solar radiation, atmospheric temperature, and wind speed. It is based on temperature and thermal stress results, which were recorded hourly from a full-scale experimental CBGB segment and Finite Element (FE) thermal analysis. The Hemi-cube method was adopted to achieve the accuracy in temperature distributions and variations in a composition system during the daily environmental variations. Analytical findings were compared with the experimental measurements, and a good agreement was found. On the other hand, parametric investigations are carried out to investigate the effect of the cross-section geometry and orientation of the longitudinal axis of CBGB on the thermal response and stress distributions. Based upon individual parametric investigations, some remarks related to the thermal loading parameters were submitted. Additionally, some observations about the CBGB configurations were identified, which must be taken into account in the design process. Finally, this research indicates that the design temperature distribution with a uniform differential between the concrete slab and the steel girder is inappropriate for describing the thermal impacts in design objective.
An engineered barrier system (EBS) for the deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) is composed of a disposal canister, buffer material, gap-filling material, and backfill material. As the buffer fills the empty space between the disposal canisters and the near-field rock mass, heat energy from the canisters is released to the surrounding buffer material. It is vital that this heat energy is rapidly dissipated to the near-field rock mass, and thus the thermal conductivity of the buffer is a key parameter to consider when evaluating the safety of the overall disposal system. Therefore, to take into consideration the sizeable amount of heat being released from such canisters, this study investigated the thermal conductivity of Korean compacted bentonites and its variation within a temperature range of 25 ℃ to 80-90 ℃. As a result, thermal conductivity increased by 5-20% as the temperature increased. Furthermore, temperature had a greater effect under higher degrees of saturation and a lower impact under higher dry densities. This study also conducted a regression analysis with 147 sets of data to estimate the thermal conductivity of the compacted bentonite considering the initial dry density, water content, and variations in temperature. Furthermore, the Kriging method was adopted to establish an uncertainty metamodel of thermal conductivity to verify the regression model. The R2 value of the regression model was 0.925, and the regression model and metamodel showed similar results.
NOAA/AVHRR data were used to analyze sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and thermal fronts (TFs) in the Korean seas. Temporal and spatial analyses were based on data from 1993 to 2000. Harmonic analysis revealed mean SST distributions of $10{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. Annual amplitudes and phases were $4{\sim}11^{\circ}C$ and $210{\sim}240^{\circ}$, respectively. Inverse distributions of annual amplitudes and phases were found for the study seas, with the exception of the East China Sea, which is affected by the Kuroshio Current. Areas with high amplitudes (large variations in SSTs) showed 'low phases' (early maximum SST); areas with low amplitudes (small variations in SSTs) had 'high phases' (late maximum SST). Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analyses of SSTs revealed a first-mode variance of 97.6%. Annually, greater SST variations occurred closer to the continent. Temporal components of the second mode showed higher values in 1993, 1994, and 1995. These phenomena seemed to the effect of El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$. The Sobel edge detection method (SEDM) delineated four fronts: the Subpolar Front (SPF) separating the northern and southern parts of the East Sea; the Kuroshio Front (KF) in the East China Sea, the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) in the South Sea, and a tidal front (TDF) in the West Sea. Thermal fronts generally occurred over steep bathymetric slopes. Annual amplitudes and phases were bounded within these frontal areas. EOF analysis of SST gradient values revealed the temporal and spatial variations in the TFs. The SPF and SSCF were most intense in March and October; the KF was most significant in March and May.
Applications of composite materials have been in progress noticeably in manufacturing areas of automotive, aircraft and in other industries, resulting in ensuing research activities. Carbon-epoxy, one of major composite materials, is investigated for its thermal characteristics. Upon treatments of the composite material with repeated heatings and coolings variations of its elastic constants are monitored to reveal the thermal nature of the composite material. In this study, generally, changes in elastic constants are observed to occur mostly during the first 10~20 thermal cycles. Values of G(sub)13 remain almost unchanged except a minor decrease. However in the observed small changes thermal shocks produce less effect than thermal fatigues. On the other hand, values of $E_1$show gradual increases with the num-ber of applied thermal cycles and temperatures. Meanwhile, values of $E_2$ and G(sub)23 decrease to a certain extent in the early stage during the applications of thermal cycling but are not appreciable affected by frequencies of thermal cy-cles. Also, thermal shocks are observed to induce different effects depending on treatment temperatures.

Various efforts to combine new high-tech materials with solar system have been progressed nowadays in order to improve the performance of the existing passive solar system. TIM(Transparent Insulation Material) replacing the conventional outer building envelope glazing as well as the wall is good example for this trend. TI integrated wall is a thermal mass wall with a special shaped TIM instead of using typical envelope materials The tested TIM type is a small(diameter 4mm and thickness 50mm) capillary tube of Okalux model and cement brick(density 1500kg/m3). The purpose of this study was to analyze the thermal performance through the actual measurements performed in a test cell. This study was carried out to justify the following issues. 1) the impact of Tl-wall over the temperature variations 2) the impact of mass wall surface absorptance over the transient thermal behavior and 3) the impact of thermal mass wall thickness over the temperature variations. Finally, as results indicated that the peak time of room temperature was shifted about one hour early when absorptance of thermal mass wall changed from 60% to 95% for the 190mm thickness thermal mass wall test case. the temperature difference of both surfaces of thermal mass wall surface showed about $23^{\circ}C$ during a day of March for the 380mm thickness thermal mass wall case. However, the thermal mass wall was over-heated by outside temperature and solar radiation in a day of May the temperature difference of both surfaces of thermal mass wall surface was indicated $10^{\circ}C$ and inside temperature was observed more than average 22C.
