  • This study is carried out to evaluate the commercial feasibility of the room temperature and thermal polymerization method as a lens manufacturing method. All samples are found to be transparent after polymerization, thereby indicating that their physical and surface properties are suitable for hydrogel ophthalmic lenses. The optical and physical properties of the lenses are compared. The water content of the samples that are prepared via a room temperature polymerization process decreases with the addition of MMA as compared to the water content of the samples that are prepared via thermal polymerization. When MMA and DMA are used as an additive for improving functionality, the wettability of the lenses increases. By measuring the AFM, the surface roughness is shown to improve more than MMA and DMA. Therefore, it is judged to be an appropriate process for manufacturing hydrogel lenses with high functionality.

  • Rare-earth zirconates, such as lanthanum zirconates and gadolinium zirconates, have been intensively investigated due to their excellent properties of low thermal conductivity as well as chemical stability at high temperature, which can make these materials ones of the most promising candidates for next-generation thermal barrier coating applications. In this study, three compositions, lanthanum/gadolinium zirconates with reduced rare-earth contents from stoichiometric $RE_2Zr_2O_7$ compositions, are fabricated via solid state reaction as well as sintering at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs. The phase formation, microstructure, and thermo-physical properties of three oxide ceramics are examined. In particular, each oxide ceramics exhibits composite structures between pyrochlore and fluorite phases. The potential of lanthanum/gadolinium zirconate ceramics for TBC applications is also discussed.

  • In this study, the melt-mixing condition was optimized first to maximize the physical properties of a wood plastic composite (WPC) with recycled polypropylene (PP) and the effects of recycled PP content on the physical properties of the WPC were investigated. Mechanical properties of the WPC were measured by UTM and an izod impact tester and thermal properties were investigated by DSC, TGA and DMA. Fracture surfaces of the WPC were investigated by SEM. The optimized mixing condition of WPC with 50 wt% recycled PP of total PP was melt-mixing at $170^{\circ}C$ for 15 min at 60 rpm. With increasing the content of the recycled PP, the water absorption characteristics of the WPC increased and the thermal and mechanical properties decreased. However, the following was concluded from the analysis of all the physical properties; it was possible adding the recycled PP up to 50 wt% of total PP without a significant decrease in the performance of the WPC.

  • The variation of chemical structure and physical properties of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) during thermal aging process was investigated. The formation of carbonyl functional group resulting from thermal oxidation reaction of XLPE was monitored using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. It was observed that the intensity of carbonyl peak observed at 1715 nm linearly increased with aging time in NIR spectroscopy. The linear relationship between NIR peak absorbance and aging time confirmed that NIR spectroscopy might be used as a proper tool for monitoring the aging process of polymeric materials. Also the formation of crosslinks during the aging process was monitored using thermal mechanical analysis, stress-strain test, and Shore hardness test. The change in the physical properties, such as the increase in the glass transition temperature from 110 to 132$^{\circ}C$, the decrease in the strain from 265 to 110%, as well as the increase in the shore D hardness from 32 to 50, was observed during the aging process.

  • Shrink-resist effects and properties of the knitted fabrics from wool/acrylic(W/A) fiber blends were determined to find out an optimal blending ratio keeping the quality properties of wool products. The test fabrics were knitted by a weft knitting machine with all needle knitting structure ($0{\times}0$ rib) under the same knitting conditions with five different types of yarns: $W100\%,\;A100\%$, and W/A blended yarns(70/30, 50/50, 30/70). Shrinkage during repeated washing, electrostatic propensity, thermal resistance and pilling propensity of W/A knits. The shrink resistance was significantly enhanced on repeated washing of W/A knits, especially, over $50\%$ acrylic blended knits. Addition of strong physical force and alkali detergent applied in this washing experiment brought about superior effects with the low shrinkage rate although it was very severe washing conditions for wool fabrics. The results from the washing experiment implies that W/A blend knits can be machine washed at individual households with other ordinary laundry. There was some changes and variation found in thermal resistance, electrostatic propensity, and pilling. W/A 50/50 blended knits did not bring serious changes to other physical properties comparing with original wool, which helps consumers care wool knitted clothes more conveniently.

  • The crosslinking behavior of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) containing eight acrylate groups in a cage form in ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) peroxide crosslinking, the effect on mechanical properties, and the thermal stability were investigated. An EPDM/POSS composite material was prepared by mixing 0 to 12 parts per hundreds of rubber (phr) of POSS per 100 phr of rubber by content and adding a peroxide crosslinking agent. As a result of crosslinking properties, it was found that the acrylate group of POSS was activated by peroxide and improved the peroxide crosslinking efficiency. Although the dispersion stability of POSS in EPDM/POSS composites was poor, the fracture strength, elongation and thermal stability were improved.

  • Metal oxide(MgO) was added to FKM rubber in order to develop automotive fuel hose which ran show elastic characteristics under extreme condition. Cure characteristics, physical properties, thermal resistance and fuel resistance of FKM compounded rubber with MgO were investigated. MgO was mixed to FKM rubber materials within the range of $0{\sim}20phr$. From the test results of rheological properties and Mooney viscosity, the $t_{s2}$, $T_{c90}$ values increased as the MgO contents increased in FKM rubber compounding. Hardness and 100% modulus of FKM compounded rubber slightly increased, but tensile strength and elongations at break slightly decreased. From the test results of thermal resistance of rubber specimens at 130, 150, and $170^{\circ}C$ for 70 hrs, the changing rate of physical properties was found to be relatively small. Fuel resistance tests were carried out for fuel A, B, C and D at $40^{\circ}C$ for 70hrs, and the results showed that the changing rate in physical properties was found to increase from Fuel A to D, Furthermore thermal properties of FKM compounded rubber containing MgO were also investigated by using TGA/DSC. The optimum mixing ratio of additive to FKM rubber to get the maximum effect on thermal resistance and fuel resistance, within the range of desirable specification for rubber material, was determined to be 6 phr for MgO.

  • Silica is the most popular materials as a filler of EMC for microelectronic packaging. However, because of its low thermal conductivity, the use of silica is restricted to parts requiring high thermal dissipation. The superior fluidity of EMC can be achieved with a combination of filler size distribution. In this study, physical properties of EMC filled with the crystalline silica(13$\mu\textrm{m}$) which have high fluidity and low cost and the AlN(2 $\mu\textrm{m}$) which have high thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion were evaluated by changing the AlN/silica ratios. As a result of the evaluation of physical properties of EMC, the optimum mixing ratio of AlN/crystalline silica was 0.3/0.7. In this condition, binary mixture(AlN/crystalline silica) filled EMC showed superior properties, i.e., in the thermal conductivity, CTE, dielectric constant, flexural strength, and thermal shock resistance without reduction of fluidity.
