A study was performed to investigate the isobaric effects of impurities in isotope measurement of gadolinium by TIMS. Especially, the ratio of $^{155}Gd/^{158}Gd$ showed the higher value than that of natural gadolinium and also decreased as the measuring time increased. This phenomenon is considered to be due to the oxide form of La ($LaO^+$, m/z=155) causing to create a serious bias on the measurement of $^{155}Gd$ abundance by La as an impurity, and due to $LaO^+$ produced more than the $Gd^+$ in the early time which disappears as the time goes on because of lower melting point and ionization potential of La than Gd. Although isobaric effects from Ba($BaO^+$), Ce($CeO^+$), Sm($SmO^+$), La($LaO^+$), and $K_4{^+}$(m/z=156)-cluster were detected even when blank rhenium filaments were used, these could be avoided by preconditioning(baking out) the filament. And we found that the measurement of $GdO^+$ instead of $Gd^+$ is more suitable in avoiding the isobaric effect from impurities such as La, Ce and Ba in the measurement of Gd isotope only in case of absence or extremely low level of Yb, Sm, Dy, Er, Lu.
pH/Thermal sensitive copolymers with the various acidic comonomer compositions composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) with acrylic acid (AAc), 2-acrylamido glycolic acid (AAmGAc), and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) were synthesized by free radial polymerization. In this study, to characterize the effect of different acidic comonomer composition and pH on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behaviors of their copolymers. phase transition experiments were performed with a thermo-optical analyzer (TOA). The phase transition temperature (T$^{p}$ ) of aqueous poly(NIPAAm-co-AAc) solution was lowered with increasing the ionization of the acid group in AAc, that is, the ionized state induced the electrostatic repulsion of ionized groups. In contrast, when AAmGAc was introduced into PNIPAAm, T$^{p}$ was little changed at pH 1-3, whereas climbed up significantly from pH 1 to pH 3. In the range of pH 6-10, Tp was lower than that of pH 3-5. This result was considered to be \"Ionic Screen Effect\" and this effect had been also observed in the case of poly(NIPAAm-co-AMPS).-co-AMPS).

We present an optical spectroscopic study of 28 supernova remnant (SNR) candidates in M81 and two SNR candidates in M82. The optical spectra of these SNR candidates were obtained using the MMT/Hectospec as a part of the K-GMT Science Program. Based on the [S II]/$H{\alpha}$ ratio and the radial velocity, we find that twenty six out of the M81 candidates are genuine SNRs. Two SNR candidates in M82 are thought to be shocked condensations in the galactic outflow or SNRs. In the spectral line ratio diagrams, M81 SNRs are divided into two groups: an [O III]-strong group and an [O III]-weak group. The [O III]-weak SNRs have larger sizes, and may have faster shock velocity. We estimate the nitrogen and oxygen abundance of the SNRs from the comparison with shock-ionization models. We find a radial gradient in nitrogen abundance, $dLog(N/H)/dlogR=-0.023{\pm}0.009\;dex\;kpc^{-1}$ little evidence for the gradient in oxygen abundance. The nitrogen abundance shows shallower gradient than those of the planetary nebulae and H II regions of M81. We find five X-ray emitting SNRs. Their X-ray hardness colors are consistent with thermal SNRs.
Isotope ratio analysis of nuclear materials in individual particles is of great importance for nuclear safeguards. Although secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) are utilized for the analysis of individual uranium particles, few studies were conducted for the analysis of individual uranium-plutonium mixed oxide particles. In this study, we applied SIMS and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to the isotope ratio analysis of individual U-Pu mixed oxide particles. In the analysis of individual U-Pu particles prepared from mixed solution of uranium and plutonium standard reference materials, accurate $^{235}U/^{238}U$, $^{240}Pu/^{239}Pu$ and $^{242}Pu/^{239}Pu$ isotope ratios were obtained with both methods. However, accurate analysis of $^{241}Pu/^{239}Pu$ isotope ratio was impossible, due to the interference of the $^{241}Am$ peak to the $^{241}Pu$ peak. In addition, it was indicated that the interference of the $^{238}UH$ peak to the $^{239}Pu$ peak has a possibility to prevent accurate analysis of plutonium isotope ratios. These problems would be avoided by a combination of ICP-MS and chemical separation of uranium, plutonium and americium in individual U-Pu particles.
After $SF_6$, which is being used in power equipment as an insulating material, is classified as one of the 6 major greenhouse gases, the maintenance and the refinement of used $SF_6$ started to get attention. In regard to this, KEPCO Research Institute (KEPRI) is developing $SF_6$ recovery and refinement technology starting with establishing a comprehensive $SF_6$ analysis system. With the analysis system, qualitative and quantitative analyses of the purity and the impurities of $SF_6$ before and after recovery, and before and after refinement have been carried out. The analysis system is comprised of GC-DID (Gas Chromatograph -Discharge Ionization Detector) for trace impurities analysis, GC-TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) for analyses of $SF_6$ purity and major impurities concentration from several hundred ppm up to percent range, GC-MSD (Mass Selective Detector) for analyses of impurities not included in standard gas, FT-IR (Fourier Transform-Infrared) Spectrometer for analysis of HF and $SO_2$, and moisture analyzer for analysis of moisture below 100 ppm. With this analysis system, complete analysis method of $SF_6$ has been established. This analysis system is being used in the maintenance of power equipment and the development of $SF_6$ recovery and refinement technologies. In this paper, the analysis results of four samples - gas and liquid phase $SF_6$ samples from a $SF_6$ refinement system before and after refinement are presented.

This work examines the dynamic properties of ice surfaces in vacuum for the temperature range of 140~180 K, which extends over the onset temperatures for ice sublimation and the phase transition from amorphous to crystallization ice. In particular, the study focuses on the transport processes of excess protons and chloride ions in ice and their segregative behavior to the ice surface. These phenomena were studied by conducting experiments with a relatively thick (~100 BL) ice film constructed with a bottom $H_2O$ layer and an upper $D_2O$ layer, with excess hydronium and chloride ions trapped at the $H_2O$/$D_2O$ interface as they were generated by the ionization of hydrogen chloride. The migration of protons, chloride ions, and water molecules to the ice film surface and their H/D exchange reactions were measured as a function of temperature using the methods of low energy sputtering (LES) and Cs+ reactive ion scattering (RIS). Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments monitored the desorption of water and hydrogen chloride from the surface. Our observations indicated that both hydronium and chloride ions migrated from the interfacial layer to segregate to the surface at high temperature. Hydrogen chloride gas desorbs via recombination reaction of hydronium and chloride ions floating on the surface. Surface segregation of these species is driven by thermodynamic potential gradient present near the ice surface, whereas in the bulk, their transport is facilitated by thermal diffusion process. The finding suggests that chlorine activation reactions of hydrogen chloride for polar stratospheric ice particles occur at the surface of ice within a depth of at most a few molecular layers, rather than in the bulk phase.
A series of scientific analyses, including ICP-AES, microstructure, and TIMS, were carried out on 5 bronze spoons among 14 bronze artifacts excavated from the Ok-dong site in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province. The results of analysis showed that the bronze spoons were formed from an alloy of no more than 75% Cu and 21~23% Sn, placing it in the category of brassware, with trace elements such as Pb, Fe, and Zn. In particular, plumbum Pb contents of which traces of 0.04% were found, appears to have been added as an impurity during smelting. The microstructure of the bronze spoons suggests that the casting process involved using a spoon-shaped hollow mold, followed by an ropid-cooling process after the shape was perfected at approximately $586^{\circ}C$. After comparison of data measured from thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) of galena from Korea, China, and Japan, it appears that the raw materials for the bronze spoons included galena (lead sulfide) produced from the southern part of China.
The present study was designed to examine the concentrations, emission rates, and source characteristics of a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in 30 newly-constructed apartment buildings by measuring indoor and outdoor VOC concentrations over a 2-year period. For comparison, seven villa-type houses were also surveyed for indoor and outdoor VOC concentrations over a 3-month period. Indoor and outdoor air samples were collected on Tenax-TA adsorbent and analyzed using a gas chromatograph (GC)/mass spectrometer system or a GC/flame ionization detector system coupled to a thermal desorption system. The long-term change in indoor VOC concentrations depended on the type of VOCs. Generally, aromatic (except for naphthalene), aliphatic, and terpene compounds exhibited a gradual deceasing trend over the 2-year follow-up period. However, the indoor concentrations of the six halogenated VOCs did not significantly vary with time changes. Similar to these halogenated VOCs, the indoor naphthalene concentrations did not vary significantly with time changes over the 2-year period. Unlike the halogenated VOCs, the indoor naphthalene concentrations were much higher than the outdoor concentrations. The indoor concentrations of aliphatic and aromatic compounds were higher for the villa-type houses when compared to those of apartment buildings. In addition, four source groups (floor coverings and interior painting, household products, wood paneling and furniture, moth repellents) and three source groups (floor coverings and interior painting, household products, and moth repellents) were considered as potential VOC sources inside apartment buildings for the first- and second-year post-occupancy stages, respectively.

In this paper, discharge characteristics of air in the vertical arrangement of three rods(dome-shaped, cylinder-shaped, and needle-shaped rod) and plane gap having propane flame on the plane electrode are examined under the application of a.c. and d.c. high-voltages. As the result of the experiment, flashover voltages in the presence of the flame are substantially lowered than those in the absence of flame, and relative a.c. flashover voltages in the dome-shaped, cylinder-shaped, and needle-shaped rod gaps are found 32.5%, 32.1%, and 26.4% respectively. The polarity effects with the d.c. voltages are shown, and flashover voltages in negative polarity are much lowered than those in positive one. The negative flashover voltages in the dome-shaped and cylinder-shaped gaps are found 18.3% and 18.7% respectively, but the positive ones are found 53.5% and 43.2% respectively. In the needle-shaped rod gaps, meanwhile, the flame is extinguished by corona wind, and the quenching voltages are found 28.4% under the application of a.c. voltages. The ion winds of corona and the reduction of air density are the main factors of flashover reduction owing to the flame in the case of a.c. voltages, but the electrifications of the positive ion by thermal ionization besides the above factors are remarkably found in the case of d.c. voltages.

Destructive methods are used for the turnup determination of an irradiated PWR fuel. One of the methods includes U, Pu, Nd-148 and Nd-(145+146) determination by an isotope dilution mass spectrometry using triple spikes (U-233, Pu-242 and Nd-150). The method involves two sequential ion exchange resin separation procedures. Pu is eluted from the first anion exchange resin column (Dowex AG 1$\times$8) with 12 M HCl-0.1 M HI mixed solution, followed by U elution with 0.1 M HCl. Nd is isolated from other fission products on the second anion exchange resin column (Dowex AG 1$\times$4) with a nitric acid-methanol eluent. Each fraction is analysed by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The difference between Nd-148 and Nd-(145+146) method is found with an average 2.07%. The results are compared with those by the heavy element method using U and Pu isotopes and by the destructive y-spectrometric measurement of Cs-137. The dependences of isotope composition of U and Pu on burn-up, and correlation between those isotopes are illustrated graphically.
