  • Poly(HEMA)s have been used as the optometric material for the preparation of soft contact lens. The bulk thermal polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with various hydrosilanes such as $phSiH_3$, $phMeSiH_2$, and $ph2SiH_2$ were performed to produce poly(HEMA)s containing phenylsilyl end moeity. It was found for thermal polymerization that while the polymerization yield and polymer molcular weights decreased as the relative phenylsilane concentration increases, the TGA residue yields and the relative intensities of SiH IR stretching bands increased as the relative hydrosilane concentration increases over HEMA. The polymerization yield, molecular weight, and TGA residue for the thermal polymerization were higher than those for the photo polymerization. Thus, the hydrosilanes significantly influence on the polymerization as both chain-initiation and chain-transfer agents.

  • We investigated thermal stability improvement of exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (exo-THDCP) with thermal stabilizers (additives). The reaction products were sample during the reactions. The compositions of products were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to measure thermal decomposition products of exo-THDCP and to specify mechanism for thermal stabilizers. Hydrogen donors (thermal stabilizers) such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ), benzyl alcohol (BnOH) increased thermal stability of exo-THDCP. These materials donated hydrogen to radical of exo-THDCP produced after initiation of exo-THDCP. We found that stabilization of exo-THDCP radicals decreased activity of primary products of exo-THDCP and lowered formation of secondary products (above-$C_{11}$ products).

  • A new method is suggested herein to measure the virgin earth stresses by means of a borehole. This novel concept is basically a combination of borehole stress relieving and borehole fracturing techniques. The destressing of the borehole is achieved by means of inducing thermal tensile stresses at the borehole periphery by using a cryogenic fluid such as Liquid Nitrogen($LN_2$). The borehole wall eventually develops fractures when the induced thermal stresses exceed the existing compressive stresses at the borehole periphery in addition to the tensile strength of the rock. The above concept is theoretically analyzed for its potential applicability to interpret in situ stress levels from the tensile fracture stresses and the corresponding borehole wall temperatures. Coupled thermo-mechanical numerical simulations are also conducted using FLAC3D, with thermal option, to check the validity of the proposed techniques. From the preliminary theoretical and numerical analysis, the method suggested for the measurement of in situ stresses appears to be capable of accurate estimation of the virgin stresses by monitoring tensile crack formation at a borehole wall and recording the wall temperatures at the time of crack initiation.

  • The thermo-mechanical interaction between brake block and wheel tread during braking has been found to cause thermal crack on the wheel tread. Due to thermal expansion of the rim material, the thermal cracks will protrude from the wheel tread and be more exposed to wear during the wheel/block contact than the rest of the tread surface. The wheel rim is in residual compression stress when is new. After service running, the region in the tread has reversed to tension. This condition can lead to the formation and growth of thermal cracks in the rim which can ultimately lead to premature failure of wheel. In the present paper, the thermal cracks of railway wheel, one of severe damages on the wheel tread, were evaluated to understand the safety of railway wheel in running condition. The residual stresses for damaged wheel which are applied to tread brake are investigated. Mainly X-ray diffusion method is used. Under the condition of concurrent loading of continuous rolling contact with rails and cyclic frictional heat from brake blocks, the reduction of residual stress is found to correlate well with the thermal crack initiation.

  • Thermal stability of exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (exo-THDCP) were investigated in a batch-type reactor perfectly coated with quartz. The 1 ml liquid product, which was a sufficiently small amount so as not to affect the reaction pressure, was sampled at 90 min intervals during the reaction and determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to measure thermal decomposition products of exo-THDCP and specify mechanism for additives (thermal stabilizer). Hydrogen donors (thermal stabilizer) such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ), benzyl alcohol (BnOH) increased thermal stability of exo-THDCP. These materials donated hydrogen to radical of exo-THDCP produced after initiation of exo-THDCP to decrease activity of primary products of exo-THDCP.

  • A probabilistic structural integrity assessment is performed for a reactor pressure vessel under PTS(Pressurized Thermal Shock). A semi-elliptical finite axial crack is assumed to he in the beltline region(either base metal or weld meta)1 of the reactor vessel inside surface. The selected random variables are initial crack depth, neutron fluence on the vessel inside surface, copper, nickel, and phosphorus content of the vessel material, and RT/sub NDT/. The probabilities of crack initiation or vessel failure where the crack is propagated through vessel wall are calculated. The probabilities obtained with random crack size are compared to these obtained with deterministic us. Since the failure function cannot to explicitly by selected by selected random variables, Monte Carlo Simulation is applied to perform probabilistic analysis The influence of the amount of neutron fluence is also examined to assess the structural reliability for vessel life time.

  • Thermal elastic-plastic analysis was performed to assess the initial residual stress distribution of welded joints considering temperature dependent material properties. The test model was the idealized boxing fillet specimen, frequently appeared in the joints of longitudinal and transverse members of ship structure. Residual stress relaxations due to external loads were analyzed by subsequent elastic-plastic analysis considering loading and unloading steps, and the characteristics of residual stress relaxations were discussed with the levels of external loads. Additionally, to define the fatigue life of crack initiation and propagation, the S-N data for each crack length were appraised.

  • The AP/HTPB composite propellant is a common choice for solid rocket propulsion. The externally heated rocket via fires, for instance, can cause the energetic substance to ignite, and this may lead to a thermal runaway event marked by a severe explosion. In order to develop preventive measures to reduce the possibility of such accidents in propulsion systems, we investigate the ignition and initiation properties of AP/HTPB propellant.

  • Investigation on ignition and flame propagation of pyrolyzing fuel in a cylindrical enclosure is accomplished. The pyrolyzing fuel of cylindrical shape is located in an outer cylinder sustained at high-temperature. Due to gravity, the buoyancy motion is inevitably incurred in the enclosure and this affects the flame initiation and propagation behavior. The radiative heat transfer plays an important role since a high temperature difference is involved in the problem. Numerical studies have been performed over overheat ratio, and vertical fuel eccentricity. The location of flame onset is affected by the vertical eccentricity of inner pyrolyzing fuel as well as thermal conditions applied.

  • We report a plasma-on-a-chip (POC) which provides a non-thermal atmospheric plasma for superbacteria infection treatment A three-electrode configuration allows an initiation carrier injection prior to a primary discharge, leading to a significant reduction in a breakdown voltage. A stable non-thermal argon plasma is generated using a pulsed glow discharge and inactivation of anti-biotic resistant bacteria, for example MRSA, is successfully demonstrated by exposing the bacteria to the argon plasma in a couple of minutes.
