  • The thermal buckling properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) are studied using nonlocal Timoshenko beam model, including the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The DWCNTs are considered as two nanotube shells coupled through the van der Waals interaction between them. The geometric nonlinearity is taken into account, which arises from the mid-plane stretching. Considering the small-scale effects, the governing equilibrium equations are derived and the critical buckling temperatures under uniform temperature rise are obtained. The results show that the critical buckling temperature can be overestimated by the local beam model if the nonlocal effect is overlooked for long nanotubes. In addition, the effect of shear deformation and rotary inertia on the buckling temperature is more obvious for the higher-order modes. The investigation of the thermal buckling properties of DWCNTs may be used as a useful reference for the application and the design of nanostructures in which DWCNTs act as basic elements.

  • This work presents a comprehensive investigation of buckling behavior of bidirectional functionally graded imperfect beams exposed to several thermal loading with general boundary conditions. The nonlinear governing equations are derived based on 2D shear deformation theory together with Von Karman strain-displacement relation. The beams are composed of two different materials. Its properties are porosity-dependent and are continuously distributed over the length and thickness of the beams following a defined law. The resulting equations are solved analytically in order to determine the thermal buckling characteristics of BDFG porous beams. The precision of the current solution and its accuracy have been proven by comparison with works previously published. Numerical examples are presented to explore the effects of the thermal loading, the elastic foundation parameters, the porosity distribution, the grading indexes and others factors on the nonlinear thermal buckling of bidirectional FG beam rested on elastic foundation.

  • An analytical formulation and solution process for the buckling analysis of porous magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) beam via different thermal loadings and various boundary conditions is suggested in this paper. Magneto electro mechanical coupling properties of FGM beam are taken to vary via the thickness direction of beam. The rule of power-law is changed to consider inclusion of porosity according to even and uneven distribution. Pores possibly occur inside FGMs due the result of technical problems that lead to creation of micro-voids in these materials. Change in pores along the thickness direction stimulates the mechanical and physical properties. Four-variable tangential-exponential refined theory is employed to derive the governing equations and boundary conditions of porous FGM beam under magneto-electrical field via Hamilton's principle. An analytical model procedure is adopted to achieve the non-dimensional buckling load of porous FG beam exposed to magneto-electrical field with various boundary conditions. In order to evaluate the influence of thermal loadings, material graduation exponent, coefficient of porosity, porosity distribution, magnetic potential, electric voltage and boundary conditions on the critical buckling temperature of the beam made of magneto electro elastic FG materials with porosities a parametric study is presented. It is concluded that these parameters play remarkable roles on the buckling behavior of porous MEE-FG beam. The results for simpler states are proved for exactness with known data in the literature. The proposed numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of MEE-FG beam with porosity phases.

  • An investigation of the nonlinear thermal buckling behavior of a nano-sized beam constructed from intelligent materials called piezo-magnetic materials has been presented in this article. The nano-sized beam geometry has been considered based on two assumptions: an ideal straight beam and an imperfect beam. For incorporating nano-size impacts, the nano-sized beam formulation has been presented according to nonlocal elasticity. After establishing the governing equations based on classic beam theory and nonlocal elasticity, the nonlinear buckling path has been obtained via Galerkin's method together with an analytical trend. The dependency of buckling path to piezo-magnetic material composition, electro-magnetic fields and geometry imperfectness has been studied in detail.

  • This paper deals with the applicability of a new extended layerwise optimization method for thermal buckling load optimization of laminated composite plates. The design objective is the maximization of the critical thermal buckling of the laminated plates. The fibre orientations in the layers are considered as design variables. The first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used for the finite element solution of the laminates. Finally, the numerical analysis is carried out to show the applicability of extended layerwise optimization algorithm of laminated plates for different parameters such as plate aspect ratios and boundary conditions.

  • For many decades, the railway was constructed using tracks with jointed rails of relatively short lengths in accordance with rolling and handling technology. The joints cause many drawbacks in the track and lead to significant maintenance cost. So, railroad engineers became interested in eliminating joints to increase service loads and speeds by improving rolling, welding, and fastening technology, Continuous welded rail(CWR) track has many advantages over the conventional jointed-rail track. But in the case of the elimination of rail joints, it may cause the track to be suddenly buckled laterally by thermal and vehicle loads. Thermal loads are caused by an increase in the temperature of railway track. In this paper, CWR track model and CWRB program are developed for linear buckling analysis using finite element method(FEM). The finite element discretization is used with a total of 14 degrees of freedom for each rail element. The stiffness of the fastener, tie, and ballast bed are included by a set of spring elements. The investigation on the buckling modes and temperature of CWR track is presented in the paper.

  • This paper deals with critical thermal buckling load optimization of symmetrically laminated four layered angle-ply plates with one or two different intermediate line supports. The design objective is the maximization of the critical thermal buckling load and a design variable is the fibre orientation in the layers. The first order shear deformation theory and nine-node isoparametric finite element model are used for the finite element solution of the laminates. The modified feasible direction (MFD) method is used for the optimization routine. For this purpose, a program based on FORTRAN is used. Finally, the numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effects of location of the internal line supports, plate aspect ratios and boundary conditions on the optimal designs and the results are compared.

  • Thermal buckling of nonlocal flexoelectric nanoplates incorporating surface effects is analyzed for the first time. Coupling of strain gradients and electrical polarizations is introduced by flexoelectricity. It is assumed that flexoelectric nanoplate is subjected to uniform and linear temperature distributions. Long range interaction between atoms of nanoplate is modeled via nonlocal elasticity theory. The residual surface stresses which are usually neglected in modeling of flexoelectric nanoplates are incorporated into nonlocal elasticity to provide better understanding of the physic of problem. A Galerkin-based approach is implemented to solve the governing equations derived from Hamilton's principle are solved. The verification of obtained results is performed by comparing buckling loads of flexoelectric nanoplate with previous data. It is shown that buckling loads of flexoelectric nanoplate are significantly affected by thermal loading type, temperature change, nonlocal parameter, surface effect, plate thickness and boundary conditions.

  • Generally main girders and steel piers of temporary bridges form the steel rahmen structure. In this study, the rational stability design procedure for main members of temporary bridges is presented using 3D system buckling analysis and second-order elastic analysis. 2 types of temporary bridges, which are possible to be designed and fabricated in reality, are chosen and the buckling design for them is performed considering load combinations of dead and live loads, thermal load, and wind load. Effective buckling length of steel piers, effects of live loads on effective length of main members, transition of ~id buckling modes, and effects of second-order analysis are investigated through case study of 2 temporary bridges.

  • We in this article study nonlinear thermal buckling of bi-directional functionally graded beams in the theoretical frameworks of nonlocal strain graded theory. To begin with, it is assumed that the effective material properties of beams vary continuously in both the thickness and width directions. Then, we utilize a higher-order shear deformation theory that includes a physical neutral surface to derive the size-dependent governing equations combining with the Hamilton's principle and the von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ geometric nonlinearity. It should be pointed out that the established model, containing a nonlocal parameter and a strain gradient length scale parameter, can availably account for both the influence of nonlocal elastic stress field and the influence of strain gradient stress field. Subsequently, via using a easier group of initial asymptotic solutions, the corresponding analytical solution of thermal buckling of beams is obtained with the help of perturbation method. Finally, a parametric study is carried out in detail after validating the present analysis, especially for the effects of a nonlocal parameter, a strain gradient length scale parameter and the ratio of the two on the critical thermal buckling temperature of beams.
