Effective thermal management in a battery electric vehicle (BEV) is crucial for reducing energy consumption and maximizing driving range in cold climates. Consequently, original equipment manufacturers are actively investing in the development of local heating systems. Visualizing occupant thermal behaviors or comfort can readily provide valuable insights that would substantially impact the design and control strategies of such microclimate systems. This study uses MATLAB for three-dimensional visualization of human thermal psychology. The developed program enables qualitative assessment of occupant comfort in BEVs.
In this article, thermal post-buckling and primary resonance of the porous functionally graded material (FGM) beams in thermal environment considering the geometric imperfection are studied, the material properties of FGM beams are assumed to vary along the thickness of the beam, meanwhile, the porosity volume fraction, geometric imperfection, temperature, and the elastic foundation are considered, using the Euler-Lagrange equation, the nonlinear vibration equations are derived, after the dimensionless processing, the dimensionless equations of motion can be obtained. Then, the two-step perturbation method is applied to solve the vibration problems, the resonance and thermal post-buckling response relations are obtained. Finally, the functionally graded index, the porosity volume fraction, temperature, geometric imperfection, and the elastic foundation on the resonance behaviors of the FGM beams are presented. It can be found that these parameters can influence the thermal post-buckling and primary resonance problems.

Hot spot behaviors on the disk-pad contact surface during a braking operation have been analyzed for a ventilated disk brake using the finite element method. Hot spots which were studied using a coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique are influenced by all of the mechanical, thermal, elastic and plastic processes that are involved in braking cycles, but their temperature gradients are most affected by rubbing speeds, braking forces, and design parameters between the disk and the pad. Undesirable hot spots that are generated by local thermoelastic instabilities are intended to be removed by optimized design parameters and material properties. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical method for the demonstration of hot spot behaviors has been applied to the rubbing surfaces between the disk and the pad.

A higher order zig-zag plate theory is developed to refine accurately predict fully coupled of the mechanical, thermal, and electric behaviors. Both the displacement and temperature fields through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the transverse deflection in order to consider transverse normal deformation. Linear zig-zag form is adopted in the electric field. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement and temperature fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions as well as bounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses and transverse heat flux The numerical examples of coupled and uncoupled analysis are demonstrated the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory. The present theory is suitable for the predictions of fully coupled behaviors of thick smart composite plate under mechanical, thermal, and electric loadings.

Thermo-mechanical behaviors of polymer matrix composite(PMC) with continuous TiNi fiber are studied using theoretical analysis with 1-D analytical model and numerical analysis with 2-D multi-fiber finite element(FE) model. It is found that both compressive stress in matrix and tensile stress in TiNi fiber are the source of strengthening mechanisms and thermo-mechanical coupling. Thermal expansion of continuous TiNi fiber reinforced PMC has been compared with various mechanical behaviors as a function of fiber volume fraction, degree of pre-strain and modulus ratio between TiNi fiber and polymer matrix. Based on the concept of so-called shape memory composite(SMC) with a permanent shape memory effect, the critical modulus ratio is determined to obtain a smart composite with no or minimum thermal deformation. The critical modulus ratio should be a major factor for design and manufacturing of SMC.
Sb-doped tin oxide films were deposited on Corning glass 1737 substrate by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PECVD) technique using a gas mixture of SnCl4/SbCl5/O2/Ar. The deposition behaviors of tin oxide films by PECVD were compared with those by thermal CVD, and effects of deposition temperature, r.f. power and Sb doping on the electrical properties of tin oxide films were investigated. PECVD technique largely increased the deposition rate and smoothed the surface of tin oxide films compared with thermal CVD. Electrical resistivity decreased with doping of Sb due to the increase of carrier concentration. However, large doping of Sb diminished carrier concentration and mobility due to the decrease of crystallinity, which resulted in the increase of electrical resistivity. As the deposition temperature and r.f. power increased, Cl content in the film decreased.
Siloxylated polypropylene fibers composed of polypropylene (PP) and aluminosiloxane (AS) were prepared by melt blending followed by spinning. The effects of blend compositions on the thermal behaviors, surface and tensile properties of PP/AS blend fibers were investigated by DSC, WAXD, SEM, static honestometer, etc. The heat of fusion of PP/AS blends decreased with increasing AS contents. In addition, the peak intensity of PP/AS blends in X-ray diffraction patterns decreased with increasing AS contents. It was observed that the silicone molecules exist and well distribute on the surface of siloxylated polypropylene fibers. From the results of the half-life period measurements, the anti-static properties of PP fibers siloxylated with AS was found to be significantly modified.
Two polysiloxanes having different chemical structures were blended with polycarbonate (PC) under ultrasonic irradiation in solution. The polysiloxanes used were poly(methylphenyl siloxane) and vinyl-terminated poly(dimethyl siloxane). It was of primary interest to investigate the effect of polysiloxane structure on the rheological properties of PC/polysiloxane blends. It was found that a small amount (1.5 phr) of polysiloxanes greatly altered the melt viscosities and elasticity of PC. In particular, incorporation of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) led to a notable increase in elasticity with greater shear sensitivity of PC. The observed rheological behaviors of PC/polysiloxane blends were partly explained in conjunction with the tendencies found in ultrasonic degradation of polysiloxanes. Thermal stability and morphology in sonicated blends of PC/polysiloxane blends were also discussed.

This study presents an analytical method of solving the behaviors of arc plasma in a nozzle constricting transferred-type torch and purposes to obtain the basic data for the design of a plasma torch, which can be obtained from the temperature, pressure, velocities and voltage distributions. We have to solve some conservation equations simultaneously and need to know the exact thermal gas properties in order to obtain the correct behaviors of arc plasma. It is also necessary to give the relevant physical or geometric boundary conditions. For the simplicity of analysis, we assumed that (a) the plasma flow is laminar, (b)the local thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e. LTE, prevails over the entire arc column region. The electrode sheath effects were neglected and the nozzle area was excluded from the analysis by assuming that the current flow into the nozzle is zero. We solved the momentum transfer equation including the self-magnetic pinch effect, and obtained the temperature distribution from the energy conservation equation. From this temperature, we could get arc voltage distribution. (author). refs., figs., tabs.
In this paper, analysis of thermal post-buckling behaviors of sandwich nanobeams with two layers of multi-phase magneto-electro-thermo-elastic (METE) composites have been presented considering geometric imperfection effects. Multi-phase METE material is composed form piezoelectric and piezo-magnetic constituents for which the material properties can be controlled based on the percentages of the constituents. Nonlinear governing equations of sandwich nanobeam are derived based on nonlocal elasticity theory together with classic thin beam model and an analytical solution is provided. It will be shown that post-buckling behaviors of sandwich nanobeam in thermo-electro-magnetic field depend on the constituent's percentages. Buckling temperature of sandwich nanobeam is also affected by nonlocal scale factor, magnetic field intensity and electrical voltage.
