  • Cracking in connote structures is one of the main issues of structural design next to ensuring the load-bearing capacity. Thermal analysis is used to prevent thermal mucking, but concrete properties are uncertain variable, and analysis results have uncertainty, too. In this study, sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the effect of conductivity, specific heal and pouring temperature. The results show that lower conductivity and higher specific heat increase the maximum temperature and maximum tensile stress. The structure with internal restraint is mostly influenced by the change of conductivity and specific heat.

  • In this study, we built a thermal model for SNIPE 6U nano-satellite which has scientific mission for measuring science data in near Earth space environment and described thermal design based on the thermal model. And the validity of the thermal design was verified through the on-orbit thermal analysis. The thermal design was carried out mainly on the passive thermal control techniques such as surface finishes, insulators, and thermal conductors in consideration of the characteristics of the nano-satellite. However, the components with narrow operating temperature range and directly exposed to the orbital thermal environments, such as a battery and thrusters, are accomodated with heaters to satisfy the temperature requirements. On-orbit thermal analysis conditions are based on the basic orbital conditions of the satellite, and thermal analysis was performed for Normal mode, Launch & Early Orbit Phase (LEOP), Safehold mode, and Maneuver mode which are classified by the power consumption and the attitude of the satellite according to the mission scenario. The analysis results for each mode confirmed that every component satisfies the temperature requirement. In addition, the heater capacity and duty cycle of the battery and thruster were calculated through the analysis results of the Safehold mode.

  • Thermal management is very important for the success of high density circuit design in LTCC. To realized more accurate thermal analysis for structure design, a series of simple thermal resistance measurement by laser flash method and parametric numerical analysis have been carried out. The design of via filled material would be useful in thermal management of power devices.

  • The start of satellite thermal design was to predict the worst operating environment through analysis of the thermal environment of the operation orbit. Because the satellites have different types of operating trajectories for their mission, the exposed thermal environment also varies. Thus, it is necessary to analyze in consideration of the orbital conditions, and a design was performed to guarantee thermal stability for the worst case defined through the analysis. The orbital thermal environmental analysis required an understanding of the basic orbit mechanics and the heat exchange relationship between the space environment and satellite. The purpose of this paper was to provide an understanding of the orbital thermal environment analysis by providing basic data on the space thermal environment in the earth-orbit and describing thermal relations that calculate the amount of space heat inflow into satellites. Additionally, an example of a virtual satellite shows the overall process of analyzing the orbital thermal environment during a mission lifetime.

  • Analyzed is the thermal margin of the Korea Nuclear Unit 1 (KNU-1) reactor core consisting of either 14 x 14 standard fuel assemblies (SFA) or optimized fuel assemblies (OFA). Employed for the analysis are two different thermal design methods; traditional and statistical thermal design method. Compared to the traditional design thermal method, the statistical thermal design method improves the core thermal margin utilizing best-estimate values for the core operating parameters combining their uncertainties in a statistical manner. Calculations are performed using a steady state and transient thermal-hydraulic analysis computer program, COBRA-IV-i. Calculated results show that the statistical thermal design method significantly improves the thermal margin and satisfies the core thermal design base of the KNU-1 SFA and OFA core. However, the thermal design base can not be met, if the traditional thermal design method is employed for the OFA role analysis.

  • Nowadays, SELENE-2 is under development for the moon explorer rover in Japan. AXS(Active X-ray Spectrometer) sensor development among the candidated payloads will be on going by the world-wide co-operation. The thermal design, analysis and test will be specially performed by Korean institutes. CFD techniques are used for the conceptual design and analysis. Thin-shell plate meshes being applied by Monte-Carlo Ray Tracing Method are generated for the thermal radiation analysis. Lumped capacity model is employed for the thermal conduction simulation of the AXS payload itself. Various shapes of the payload configuration with thermal boundary conditions are proposed and selected on the purpose of the analysis of the initial design. The results of the analysis are supposed to be used as the baseline for the further detailed design of the AXS payload in the future.

  • A thermal stratification may occur in the horizontal parts of the surge line during operating transients of the pressurizer, which produces relatively high fatigue usage factor. Heat-up transient is the most severe case among the transient conditions. In this study, to study the relationship between the magnitude of thermal stratification and the length of vertical part of the surge line, some parametric fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analyses with different length variables of the vertical part of the surge line were performed for plant heat-up transient condition by using 3-dimensional numerical analysis. The conservativeness of the traditional finite element model for thermal stratification analysis based on the conservative assumption in the surge line was also discussed by comparison of the results of 3-dimensional transient FSI analysis of this study. Stresses calculated with 3-dimensional transient model were considerably reduced comparing with the traditional analysis.

  • In this study, dome port bringing up for discussion where the ramjet occurs in flying it presents the tendency of distribution of thermal contour due to temperature and pressure. It is assumed that the material of ramjet is steel for the ease of result analysis. It applied matrial property which it follows by temperature and input boundary condition that changing temperature and pressure on each region by time difference for transient analysis. Thermal analysis region is decided until dome port part is separated and operate analysis in 0.5 second. Finally we draw tendency of thermal contour in ramjet dome port part by temperature and pressure.

  • A method of the shape design sensitivity analysis based on the boundary integral equation formulation is presented for two-dimensional inhomogeneous thermal conducting solids with multiple domains. Shape variation of the external and interface boundary is considered. A sensitivity formula of a general performance functional is derived by taking the material derivative to the boundary integral identity and by introducing an adjoint system. In numerical analysis, state variables of the primal and adjoint systems are solved by the boundary element method using quadratic elements. Two numerical examples of a compound cylinder and a thermal diffuser are taken to show implementation of the shape design sensitivity analysis. Accuracy of the present method is verified by comparing analyzed sensitivities with those by the finite difference. As application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of the thermal diffuser is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimization program.
