Determination of the bearing capacity of model ring footings: Experimental and numerical investigations

  • In this paper, it was presented an investigation on the load-settlement and vertical stress analysis of the ring footings on the loose sand bed by conducting both laboratory model tests and numerical analyses. A total of twenty tests were conducted in geotechnical laboratory and numerical analyses of the test models were carried out using the finite element package Plaxis 3D to find the ultimate capacities of the ring footings. Moreover, the results obtained from both foregoing methods were compared with theoretical results given in the literature. The effects of the ring width on bearing capacity of the footings and vertical stresses along the depth were investigated. Consequently, the experimental observations are in a very good agreement with the numerical and theoretical results. The variation in the bearing capacity is little when $r_i/R_o$ <0.3. That means, when the ring width ratio, $r_i/R_o$, is equal to 0.3, this option can provide more economic solutions in the applications of the ring footings. Since, this corresponds to less concrete consumption in the ring footing design.

Experimental Study of Bending and Bearing Strength of Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL) from Japanese Larch Veneer Strand

  • This study examined the structural performance of experimental parallel strand lumber (PSL) from a Larch veneer strand. The prototype of PSL from a Larch veneer strand was manufactured in the experimental laboratory and tested. The bending and dowel bearing strength were determined from the modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and dowel bearing strength based on a 5% offset yield load. The test results indicated that the average MOR of PSL was higher than that of 2 × 4 dimension lumber, and the average MOE of PSL was lower than that of 2 × 4 dimension lumber. A linear relationship was observed between the MOR and MOE. The allowable bending stress of PSL was derived as specified in ASTM D2915 and compared with other research. The dowel bearing strength of PSL in parallel to the grain was approximately double that perpendicular to the grain of PSL. A comparison of several theoretical calculations based on each national code for the dowel bearing strength was conducted, and some theoretical equations produced results closer to the experimental results when it was parallel to the grain, but the difference was higher in the case perpendicular to the grain. The test results showed that PSL made with Japanese larch veneer strands appeared to be suitable for a raw material of structural composite lumber (SCL) appeared to be used as a raw material for SCL.

  • Presently, abrasive processing is on eof several methods for cutting and grinding brittle materials, and high quality in dimensional accuracy and surface roughness are often required as a structural components, therefore most of them has to be ground. In manufacturing of tungsten-carbide components, grinding by diamond wheel is usually adopted in order to provide configurational and dimensional accuracy to the components. The present study proposes the experi- mental research of optimum condition to the high quality surface grinding of the WC-Co material using diamond abrasive wheel in order to minimize the damage on the ground surface and to pursue the precise dimension by conventional grinding machine. Brief investigation is carried out to decrease the dressing is constant, theoretical grinding effect such as machining precision is changed according to the speed of workpiece. Accordingly, normal and tangential grinding forces, which are Fn, Ft were analyzed for the machining processes of WC-Co material to obtain optimum grinding conditions, 3-point bending test is carried out to check machining damage on the ground surface layer, which is one of sintered brittle materials.

간호사의 스트레스 측정도구 개발 (Development of a Scale for Measuring Nurses' Stress)

  • Purpose: This study developed a scale of nurses' stress and examined the validity and reliability of the scale. Methods: The scale was developed according to DeVellis' scale development procedure. Based on the Nursing Work Environment Stress model and the results of focus group interviews, 43 preliminary items were generated. A survey was conducted with 208 clinical nurses to test the psychometric properties of the scale. Both exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were employed to figure out and confirm the scale's theoretical structure statistically. In addition, content, convergent, and discriminative validity were evaluated and Cronbach's α was calculated to test internal reliability. Results: The final scale consisted of 19 items and verified four-factor structures. The structure of the scale was confirmed using confirmatory factor analysis, and it showed moderate correlations with the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory and Korean Nurses Occupational Stress Scale. Cronbach's α was .87. Conclusion: A scale of nurses' stress to nursing work was developed to embrace a wide range of nurses' psychological responses to nursing work based on the theoretical model.

연석의 실물차량 충돌시험 데이터를 이용한 주행안전성 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on Driving Safety Evaluations Using Full Scale Crash Test Data of Curb)

  • Current [Guideline for Installation and Management of Sidewalks and Safety Facilities on Roads] suggests that the types of curbs should be Barrier curb ($85^{\circ}$). Although Barrier curbs ($90^{\circ}$) were not specified in the guideline. The curbs installed on the roads currently are Barrier curbs ($90^{\circ}$) which are not specified in the installation standard. Therefore, it is critical to prepare for the installation standard of curbs by researching types of curbs and driving safety. This research have assessed the driving safety throughout Full Scale Crash Test according to type of curbs (Barrier curbs ($85^{\circ}$) and Barrier curbs ($90^{\circ}$)). Barrier curbs ($90^{\circ}$) showed higher figure in Theoretical head Impact Velocity, Post-impact Head Deceleration, Vehicle Damage when Crash, Passenger's Wounds Severity, and every other items than Barrier curbs ($85^{\circ}$). Barrier curbs ($85^{\circ}$) were found to have better Occupant Safety Index. Analysis of Behavior Using Full-Scale Crash Test showed difference depending on the Impact Condition between Barrier curbs ($85^{\circ}$) and Barrier curbs ($90^{\circ}$). Generally, Barrier curbs ($85^{\circ}$) were superior than Barrier curbs ($90^{\circ}$) in terms of protecting the passengers and vehicle damages. When an impact angle increases, Acceleration of Vehicle, Variations of Speed, and Contact Relationship between Wheels and Curbs, two types of curb showed similarity. However, if an impact of an angle decreases, Barrier Curbs ($85^{\circ}$) showed excellence in Driving Safety such as Acceleration of Vehicle, Variations of Speed, and Contact Relationship between Wheels and Curbs.

차량용 서스펜디드 페달 구조체의 피로 내구 분석 및 설계 개선 (Fatigue and Robust Analysis for Improving the Suspended Pedal of Vehicles)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate structural stability of the suspended plastic pedal used in vehicles and to predict its fatigue life with the results obtained from finite element analysis. And also shape optimization was performed to reduce its weight. Structural analysis of the suspended plastic pedal was based on the evaluation tests such as static test, stiffness test, and fatigue test in the actual field, which were frequently carried out in the companies manufacturing plastic pedals. The evaluation for the plastic pedal was carried out by structural and fatigue analyses using a commercial FEA program and according to it, maximum stress and strain and fatigue life of the pedal satisfied all the requirements in the evaluation tests. The results of structural analysis of the suspended plastic pedal were used in the fatigue analysis. Fatigue test was performed to verify validity of the theoretical fatigue life of the plastic pedal. And the life by theoretical calculation was in good agreement with that by the experiment. Object function for optimizing shape of the plastic pedal is its volume, and total volume of the plastic pedal was reduced to about 11.7% through shape optimization.

탑승자 안전도를 고려한 교각 방호시설물 개발에 관한 연구 (Development of Non-Redirective Crash Cushion for Bridge Piers Considering Occupant Safety)

  • The traffic accident types are largely classified into vehicle to vehicle accident, vehicle-to-person accident and single-vehicle. Especially, the single-vehicle accident types are severe when the vehicle crashed into road facilities such as bridge, piers, utility poles. The severity of single-vehicle accidents are ten times higher than that of all other accidents types. It is needed to consider to reduce accident severity. This study was conducted to develop crash worthy safety design facility to ensure the vehicle occupant safety. The simulation and the crash tests were conducted for assessment of the safety performance to check the criteria of CC2(Crash Cushion 2) level. THIV(Theoretical Head Impact Velocity) and PHD(Post-impact Head Deceleration) were used to assess occupant impact severity for crashes. The non-redirection collision test conditions for 900 kg and 1,300 kg-head on crash tests, 900 kg-1/4 offset crash tests, 1,300 kg-head on crash test with $15^{\circ}$angle were conducted. The simulation and experiment test result showed that THIV values were below 44 km/h criterion, PHD values were below the 20G. The development non-redirective crash cushion is expected to be used for the fixed object such as bridge piers for assuring occupant safety.

연약지반에서의 쉴드 TBM 굴착시 막장면 안정성 평가를 위한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Shield TBM Tunnel Face Stability in Soft Ground)

  • 본 논문은 연약지반 쉴드 TBM 축소 모형실험을 통하여 슬러리에 의해 가해지는 막장 지보압의 변화에 따른 터널 막장면 안정성 변화 양상을 파악하고자 토피고에 따라 0.5D, 0.75D, 1.0D, 1.25D, 1.5D의 총 5개 Case에 대하여 모형실험을 수행하였으며, 이론적인 터널 막장면 지보압 및 모형실험으로 선정된 적정 지보압 값을 상호 비교하였다. 암반 쉴드 TBM과 달리 연약지반 쉴드 TBM의 경우 균질한 지반조건임에 따라 모형실험으로부터 산정된 적정 지보압이 터널 심도에 따른 막장면 토압 및 수압으로부터 이론적으로 산정된 막장압 범위($P_{min}{\leq}P_{slurry\;pressure}{\leq}P_{max}$)와 잘 일치하고 있음을 확인하였다.

A Novel Test Structure for Process Control Monitor for Un-Cooled Bolometer Area Array Detector Technology

  • This paper presents the results of a novel test structure for process control monitor for uncooled IR detector technology of microbolometer arrays. The proposed test structure is based on resistive network configuration. The theoretical model for resistance of this network has been developed using 'Compensation' and 'Superposition' network theorems. The theoretical results of proposed resistive network have been verified by wired hardware testing as well as using an actual 16x16 networked bolometer array. The proposed structure uses simple two-level metal process and is easy to integrate with standard CMOS process line. The proposed structure can imitate the performance of actual fabricated version of area array closely and it uses only 32 pins instead of 512 using conventional method for a $16{\times}16$ array. Further, it has been demonstrated that the defective or faulty elements can be identified vividly using extraction matrix, whose values are quite similar(within the error of 0.1%), which verifies the algorithm in small variation case(${\sim}1%$ variation). For example, an element, intentionally damaged electrically, has been shown to have the difference magnitude much higher than rest of the elements(1.45 a.u. as compared to ${\sim}$ 0.25 a.u. of others), confirming that it is defective. Further, for the devices having non-uniformity ${\leq}$ 10%, both the actual non-uniformity and faults are predicted well. Finally, using our analysis, we have been able to grade(pass or fail) 60 actual devices based on quantitative estimation of non-uniformity ranging from < 5% to > 20%. Additionally, we have been able to identify the number of bad elements ranging from 0 to > 15 in above devices.

피에조 콘 시험을 이용한 점성토의 압밀계수 추정 (Estimating the Coefficient of Consolidation of Marine Clay Using Piezocone Penetration Tests)

  • 압밀계수는 지반과잉간극수압의 소산속도를 지배하므로 연약지반 개량공법 설계에 적용되는 매우 중요한 특성치의 하나로서 원위치의 압밀계수는 피에조 콘 소산시험을 통하여 추정된다. 간극수압 소산시험으로 추정되는 압밀계수 추정에 적용되는 기존의 이론해 들의 국내 해성점토 지반 적용성을 검토하고 점토 지반의 특성에 따른 압밀계수의 변화 특성을 파악하여 원위치 압밀계수에 대한 합리적 추정에 적합한 이론해를 선정하는 것이 이 연구의 목적이다. 이 연구에서는 경남 양산물금 지역의 해성 점성토층을 대상으로 피에조 콘 소산시험과 불교란 시료에 대한 실내시험(Rowe cell 등)을 실시하고 시험결과를 이론해에서 얻어진 수평압밀계수와 표준압밀시험(oedometer test), Rowe cell 시험결과와 비교하였다. 또한 점성토의 여러 지반 특성치(선행압밀압력 등)와 압밀계수의 관계를 고찰하여 합리적인 이론해 선정을 위한 기준을 마련하고자 하였다. 연구결과 Torstensson(원통형공동이론)해와 Teh & Houlsby의 해가 매우 유사한 값을 보이며, 표준압밀시험으로 추정한 수평압밀계수는 단계별 모두 Torstensson(원통형) 또는 Teh & Houlsby의 이론해와 유사하게 나타났다. 따라서, 피에조 콘 시험으로 수평압밀계수를 구하는 방법으로서 위의 이론해 들[Torstensson(원통형) or The & Houlsby]에 의한 산정치를 취하도록 추천되었다.
